"Of course, of course."
"You don’t believe me!"
"I do believe you."
"It doesn’t look like it!"
Kyrian watched the interaction in silence, his eyes following the scene with a curiosity he made no attempt to hide. There was something strangely pleasant about the scene, something that made him smile inwardly.
The Gao Ziyue he normally knew seemed extremely controlled.
Even when she was relaxed, there was a natural elegance in her behavior, a dignity that seemed to come from her very blood.
But there, in that small tavern, she seemed different. Younger. Freer. Closer to the girl she had probably been decades ago, before the weight of the Sky Family became an armor she could not take off.
The masks she wore in the outside world seemed to have been left at the door, along with the cold of the night.
Kyrian realized that Tavian truly meant a lot to her. It was not merely a place to eat, it was a refuge, a place where she could simply be who she was.
Lili finally gave up arguing, letting out a dramatic sigh. It was then that her eyes moved to the side, toward the figure who remained silently beside Gao Ziyue.
Kyrian.
The young waitress remained silent for two seconds, her eyes traveling over his face with an attention that was both curious and evaluative.
Black hair, harmonious features, violet eyes that seemed to contain distant storms, a calm posture that exuded quiet confidence.
The first thing that crossed her mind was extremely simple.
’He’s handsome...’
She then looked at their hands. They were still intertwined, Gao Ziyue’s fingers perfectly fitted between Kyrian’s.
There was no tension in the gesture, no hesitation, only a natural connection that seemed to have existed for much longer than a few hours.
Lili’s smile returned. This time, she was accompanied by an extremely satisfied expression, as if she had just discovered a secret she had been waiting years to uncover.
She approached Gao Ziyue, her eyes shining with a mischievousness the young lady had never seen before.
"Miss Ziyue..."
"Hmm?"
Lili leaned slightly closer and whispered, her voice low enough that only the heiress could hear:
"I knew you would meet someone good enough."
Gao Ziyue blinked, confused.
"What?"
Lili quickly glanced at Kyrian and then turned back to her, her smile widening.
"You two really suit each other."
Gao Ziyue’s brain seemed to stop for a moment, the gears of her mind locking up as she processed the words.
She opened her mouth, trying to find a response. Closed it. Looked at Kyrian, her eyes tracing his face as if she were seeing him for the first time. Then she looked at Lili, whose smile was so wide that it threatened to split her face in half.
Only then did she realize once again that she was still holding his hand. Their fingers were intertwined, and she had completely forgotten about it.
Her ears turned red, a warmth spreading rapidly. She could explain.
She could say that Kyrian was just a friend, that the two of them had just left the auction together, that it did not mean what Lili was thinking. She could clear up the misunderstanding with a few simple words.
But, for some reason, no words came out. Instead, Gao Ziyue simply pulled Kyrian a little closer, her fingers tightening around his with a firmness that was more of an affirmation than a necessity.
"Thank you."
Lili’s eyes widened, the smile on her face growing even bigger.
"So it’s true?"
"I want a table for two."
The answer came calmly, naturally, as if she had simply decided to accept the misunderstanding instead of correcting it. As if, somehow, that mistaken interpretation was not really so mistaken after all.
Kyrian looked at Gao Ziyue for a moment, his violet eyes meeting hers. He clearly realized what was happening, the way she had chosen not to deny it, how she had simply moved forward.
But he did not mind. In fact, a small feeling of satisfaction arose in his chest, a pleasant warmth he did not know exactly how to describe. He did not know why. It simply was.
Lili, for her part, seemed extremely pleased with herself, as if she had just won a bet she had been making for years.
"Of course!" She gestured for the two of them to follow her, her movements filled with renewed energy.
"Come. I’ll find a quiet place for you."
The two walked behind her, their hands still intertwined. The waitress led them to a slightly more secluded area of the hall, near a window, where two large pots of spiritual flowers were positioned beside the table.
The flowers had small white petals that glowed softly, illuminated by the nearby lanterns. Their thin stems curved with the breeze entering through the window, and a delicate, sweet fragrance emanated from them, creating a small natural barrier between that space and the rest of the tavern.
It was a more secluded table, a private little corner amid the movement of the hall.
Perfect for conversations. Perfect for two people who did not want to be disturbed. And also, without Kyrian or Gao Ziyue knowing it, a table that Lili normally reserved for couples, for those seeking a little more privacy.
"Here." Lili pulled out one of the chairs, a gesture that was both courteous and full of meaning.
Gao Ziyue released Kyrian’s hand only at that moment, her fingers separating with a reluctance she did not comment on. She sat down first, her movements graceful as she settled into the chair.
Kyrian took the seat opposite her, the wooden table between them now covered by a simple but clean tablecloth.
Lili handed them two menus made of polished wood, their surfaces smooth and glossy from use.
"You can take your time choosing."
Then she looked at Gao Ziyue, a knowing smile on her lips.
"Although I already know you’re going to order half the menu."
Gao Ziyue smiled, a smile of pure amusement.
"Maybe."
