After finishing his sentence, the man placed the bowl aside and rushed toward the kitchen to steam an egg for his young daughter.
Once he had departed, Tang Yuxin extended her arms and stared at her hands. They were miniature and frail, with thin fingers reminiscent of tiny chicken feet, yet her skin felt as soft as cotton. Biting down on one finger to test the reality of it all, she cautiously slid off the bed. Following the fragmented memories in her mind, she went to find a mirror.
Their rural residence was a self-constructed house. The solitary mirror available was a large piece built into the upper section of the wardrobe. She hurried toward it, but her height didn't even reach the halfway point of the glass. The reflection showed a three-year-old toddler; it was truly her.
She had a small face dominated by large eyes, though her hair appeared dry and tinged with a yellowish shade.
As she reached out to touch her cheek, the child within the glass mirrored the action perfectly. She then leaned forward, pressing her face directly against the cool surface.
Had she really come back? Was she truly home?
“Xinxin…” Tang Zhinian called out, growing frantic when he couldn't see his daughter in the room. Where had the little girl gone? Had she tried to go to the toilet by herself?
“Xinxin?” He set the bowl down, intending to begin a search, but he turned to find Tang Yuxin standing before the wardrobe. Her tiny hands were pressed against the mirror while she stood there barefoot. Her small feet looked pale against the floor, lacking both shoes and socks.
“Why have you not put on your shoes?” Tang Zhinian walked over, lifting her gently to settle her on a chair. He used his hand to brush the dust from her small feet. His rugged features were filled with a deep, unwavering affection for his child.
Tang Zhinian was a tall, sturdy man characterized by an honest and kind spirit. His daughter, Tang Yuxin, was his greatest source of pride. Looking at her delicate and lovely appearance, he felt certain she would blossom into a beautiful woman one day.
“Daddy is going to get your egg,” he said playfully, pinching her cheek before heading back to the kitchen. He didn't notice that as soon as he turned his back, the light vanished from Tang Yuxin’s usually bright eyes, leaving them dark. Suddenly, two large tears escaped and rolled down her face. She used her sleeve to quickly wipe them away before reaching down to feel her soft, youthful toes.
A child of three. That was right—she was only three years old.
A moment later, Tang Zhinian came back. He looked significantly younger than the version of him from thirty years in the future. His posture was straight, his frame was strong, and his hair remained pitch black. He spent his days working the fields to provide for the household. There was no shame in earning a life through hard manual labor.
He crouched down, picking up a spoon to begin feeding his daughter.
Tang Yuxin consumed the food bite by bite, showing none of her former fussiness. She recalled how difficult she had been as a child, constantly rejecting various dishes. Despite her behavior, her father had always spoiled her, cooking all sorts of treats to please her. However, following her parents' divorce, she had gone to live with her mother, Sang Zhilan. She had been forced to suppress all her spoiled habits because of her younger, more demanding stepsister, Wei Jiani. Every luxury, whether it was tasty food or new clothes, was given to Wei Jiani first, leaving Tang Yuxin to wear nothing but hand-me-downs.
