Satori discusses his mother's alternate timeline's goals with Natalia. Celeste Vance, Seraphina's sister, arrives unexpectedly to question Satori about his involvement in the Black Gate incident, suspecting he used abilities beyond his registered Aspect. Satori deflects, telling Celeste to relay to Seraphina that he is an uncontrollable threat. Celeste leaves, admitting Satori is unusual and thanked him for his honesty. Satori reveals his intent to recruit Celeste, despite her 'gilded cage' situation, finding himself unwilling to exploit her vulnerabilities.

She laughed. A genuine sound that warmed something in my chest.

The integration had changed things. Not just physically. Not just in terms of power. Something deeper had shifted. Some fundamental aspect of who I was and what I wanted.

I still planned to build an empire. Still intended to gather power and influence and beautiful women who’d fight and die for me.

But maybe I could do it without destroying everyone who got in my way.

Maybe.

The door opened again.

This time, it was a VHC technician in a white coat.

"Satori Nakano? The testing facility is ready for you."

I stood.

Natalia stood with me.

"She can’t accompany you during the evaluation," the technician said. "Protocol requires all assessments be conducted individually."

"I’ll wait here," Natalia said. Her tone carried that particular note of steel that made it clear this wasn’t a suggestion or a request—it was a declaration of fact. She would remain exactly where she stood, sentinel-like, until I returned to her.

"Fine by me."

I followed the technician down a series of progressively more isolated corridors, each turn taking us deeper into the Academy’s subterranean levels. The aesthetic transformation was gradual but unmistakable. The polished marble floors of the upper Academy—designed to impress wealthy donors and intimidate prospective students—gave way to reinforced steel plating that hummed faintly with what I recognized as energy-dampening wards. The warm ambient lighting that had bathed the entrance hall in that prestigious golden glow was replaced by harsh, clinical fluorescent strips that cast everything in stark, unforgiving detail.

By the time we finally reached the testing facility, we were three floors underground, deep in the Academy’s operational guts. The room we entered looked like someone had been given a government contract to design a torture chamber but had been forced to add ergonomic office chairs to pass the health and safety inspection. The result was deeply unsettling.

Sophisticated monitoring equipment lined every available wall surface. Energy readers with their blinking displays. Networked analysis stations that probably fed directly to some VHC database. And there, mounted against the far wall with its tangle of cables and its crown of sensor nodes, was something that looked disturbingly similar to the neural interface I’d seen in my father’s integration chamber.

That was not a comforting parallel.

"Please have a seat," the technician said, gesturing to the reinforced chair positioned in the center of the room’s sensor array.

I sat, forcing myself to appear relaxed.

Time to play the part.

"This evaluation will measure the current status of your registered Aspect, Thermal Incision. We’ll be testing output capacity, control precision, and recovery time."

"Standard stuff."

"Standard stuff," she agreed. "Though we’ve added some additional protocols for students who were directly involved in the Black Gate incident. Nothing invasive. Just some expanded energy readings to ensure there’s been no lasting damage to your metaphysical template."

Expanded energy readings.

In other words, they were looking for anomalies.

Looking for proof that something had changed during the Gate.

Good thing I knew exactly how to game this test.

The original Satori’s Aspect had been Thermal Incision. A weak pyrokinetic ability that could generate focused heat. D-Rank at best. Barely worth registering.

The System had layered additional abilities on top of that foundation. The Dragon Witch’s Ring that amplified my flames. The EMBER combat art that turned minor heat generation into a legitimate weapon. The Freezing Breath that added cryo capability.

But underneath all of that, the original Aspect still existed.

And that was what I’d show them.

"Ready when you are," I said.

The technician activated her monitoring equipment.

"Please demonstrate your Aspect at comfortable output. No need to push yourself. We’re just establishing a baseline."

I held out my palm.

Concentrated.

A small flame flickered to life. Orange. Warm. Exactly what a D-Rank pyrokinetic should produce.

"Good. Now increase output gradually."

The flame grew. Still orange. Still unremarkable. I kept the Dragon Witch’s Ring suppressed, channeling only the barest trickle of power through my original Aspect.

"Interesting. Your output has increased since your last evaluation."

"I’ve been training."

"Clearly." She tapped at her console. "Your readings show approximately a 40% increase in baseline capacity. That’s significant growth for a six-month period."

"I had motivation."

"The Black Gate?"

"Among other things."

She ran me through additional tests. Control exercises. Duration challenges. Recovery measurements. I passed everything within parameters that suggested improvement without revealing the true extent of my capabilities.

The whole time, I was aware of additional readings being taken.

Energy signatures. Trans-dimensional resonance. The subtle markers that would indicate exposure to Gate phenomena beyond normal parameters.

I kept my integrated awareness locked down tight. That fragment of cosmic understanding I’d cherry-picked from the void. It hummed at the edges of my consciousness, wanting to be used, but I forced it into dormancy.

Not here.

Not now.

Not where Seraphina’s people could detect it.

"Final test," the technician said. "Maximum sustainable output. Push yourself as hard as you can maintain for thirty seconds."

I pushed.

Fire erupted from my palm in a roaring column. Blue-white at the edges where I allowed a hint of the Dragon Witch’s Ring to bleed through. Hot enough to scorch the reinforced testing chamber.

The technician’s eyes widened.

"That’s... considerably more than expected."

"Like I said. Motivation."

I let the flames die.

She stared at her readings for a long moment.

"Your Aspect appears to be undergoing accelerated development. This sometimes happens after exposure to high-level Gate phenomena. The VHC will want to monitor your progress closely."

"I bet they will."

"You’ll need to schedule monthly evaluations going forward. Standard protocol for anomalous development patterns."

Anomalous.

There was that word again.

The word that followed me everywhere I went.

The word that an ancient entity had used when describing how I’d defied millions of years of expected outcomes.

"Schedule it with my secretary," I said.

"You have a secretary?"

"No. That was a joke."

She didn’t laugh.

I left the testing facility with my secrets intact and my limitations carefully obscured. The walk back to the waiting room gave me time to process what I’d learned.

The VHC was watching. Seraphina was suspicious. My integration with cosmic energy had fundamentally altered my metaphysical signature in ways that careful observation might eventually detect.

I needed to accelerate my timeline.

Build my power base faster.

Gather allies who could protect me when the hammer finally fell.

Natalia was waiting exactly where I’d left her.

"How did it go?"

"They think I’m developing faster than expected. Which is true. They don’t know why. Which is also true."

"So you’re still flying under the radar."

"For now."
