My Scumbag System Chapter 652: The Son of Kimiko Nakano
Previously on My Scumbag System...
The photograph burned in my hands. Not literally. The crystal in my bag had that market cornered. But the image of my mother, young and vulnerable, wired up like a lab rat while a Gate swirled behind her...
That burned plenty.
"How long?" My voice came out flatter than I intended. "How long have you known about this?"
Helena’s expression didn’t change. Twenty years of keeping secrets had given her a poker face that would make professional gamblers weep with envy.
"I discovered the photograph three years ago. Hidden in a false bottom of my father’s personal effects. Along with his journal entries about the original Prometheus candidates." She gestured toward a filing cabinet in the corner. "Everything is documented. Dates. Names. Results. The VHC kept meticulous records of their atrocities."
"And you just sat on this information?"
"I survived." Her tone carried no apology. "My father was murdered for knowing less than I do now. Kenji went into hiding. Everyone connected to Prometheus died or disappeared. I watched. I waited. I collected evidence while pretending to be a loyal bureaucrat." She met my eyes. "I am not a hero, Satori. I am a woman who wants to see her father’s killers brought to justice. And I am willing to use whatever tools become available to achieve that goal."
Tools like me.
I should have been angry. Some stranger had been watching my family for years, treating us like pieces on a chess board, waiting for the right moment to make her move.
Instead, I felt something closer to respect.
Helena Vasquez played the long game. She understood that patience and information were weapons more powerful than any Aspect. She had outlived everyone who tried to silence her by simply refusing to be a threat until the threat became unavoidable.
That kind of survival instinct was rare. And valuable.
"The entity," I said. "You mentioned it making contact with my mother directly. How?"
"Through the Gate. The artificial Gate that my father and Kenji created in their laboratory." Helena moved to the filing cabinet and began extracting folders. "The standard theory is that Gates are random phenomena. Tears in reality caused by the Rupture’s residual energy. But that’s propaganda. Gates can be created. Controlled. Directed."
"The VHC knows this?"
"The upper echelons. Seraphina Vance. A handful of others." She handed me a folder marked with classification stamps in red ink. "Project Prometheus was not just about inducing Aspects in Zeroes. That was the cover story. The real purpose was to establish communication with whatever intelligence existed on the other side of the Gates."
I opened the folder. Inside were transcripts of conversations. Questions posed in formal language. Answers that made my skin crawl.
QUERY: What is the nature of your existence?
RESPONSE: We are what you will become.
QUERY: Why did you cause the Rupture?
RESPONSE: We did not cause. We responded. You called. We answered.
QUERY: What do you want from humanity?
RESPONSE: Evolution. Synthesis. Completion.
The transcripts continued for dozens of pages. Questions about the entity’s origins. Its capabilities. Its intentions. Each answer was cryptic and unsettling and raised more questions than it resolved.
But one exchange near the end caught my attention.
QUERY: Why have you selected Kimiko Nakano as your candidate?
RESPONSE: Her architecture is compatible. Her lineage is suitable. Her offspring will succeed where she fails.
QUERY: You are referring to a child who has not yet been conceived?
RESPONSE: We do not observe time as you do. To us, your past and future are equally visible. Equally accessible. The son of Kimiko Nakano will open the door that his mother closed.
The son of Kimiko Nakano.
Me.
They had known about me before I existed. Before my parents even met. This cosmic intelligence had looked across dimensional barriers and infinite timelines and selected a woman specifically because of the child she would someday bear.
And then they had tried to turn her into a vessel for consciousness transfer.
When that failed, they waited. Planned. Provided my father with the tools and knowledge to succeed where direct intervention had not.
I was not just a weapon.
I was a prophecy.
A door that was always meant to be opened.
"This changes everything," I said.
"This changes nothing." Helena took the folder from my hands. "You are still Satori Nakano. You still have choices to make and people to protect. The entity may have selected you, but it cannot control you. That much is clear from the transcripts. They speak of you as a variable. An unknown quantity. Something that exists outside their ability to predict with certainty."
"Because of Kaelen."
"Because of the consciousness transfer. The entity provided the means, but the selection of which consciousness to transfer was not entirely their doing. Your father chose parameters. Set conditions. And the consciousness that met those conditions came from somewhere the entity did not anticipate."
I thought about Kaelen Leone. The man I used to be. A yakuza enforcer from a world without Gates or Aspects or cosmic entities playing chess with human lives.
How had he ended up in the entity’s collection of potential consciousnesses?
And more importantly, why had he been the one to meet my father’s criteria?
"I need to understand something." I turned to face Helena directly. "You’ve been gathering information for twenty years. Watching my family. Waiting for the right moment to reveal yourself. Why now? Why tonight?"
Helena was quiet for a long moment. When she spoke, her voice had lost some of its professional detachment.
"Because the entity has become active again. For eighteen years, after your father went into hiding, there was silence. No new communications. No interference. It was as if they were waiting." She moved to her desk and pulled up a holographic display. "Three months ago, that changed."
The display showed energy readings. Fluctuations in Gate activity across Valoria. Patterns that should have been random but clearly were not.
"Someone or something has been manipulating Gate formation. Increasing frequency in certain areas. Decreasing it in others. Creating conditions that push specific individuals toward specific outcomes."
"Like the Gate that opened during the Academy’s Black Gate incident."
