My Scumbag System Chapter 645: Turn Their Game Into Yours
Previously on My Scumbag System...
"No. The entity provided a way." He pulled a worn notebook from beneath the pile of papers. "When I submitted my initial research findings, I received a response. Not from the VHC. Not from any human agency. From something else entirely. A message encoded in the quantum fluctuations of a Gate’s energy signature."
He opened the notebook and showed me a page covered in symbols I didn’t recognize.
"This is the transmission I received. It took me four years to decode it. When I finally understood what it said, I realized that everything I thought I knew about the Rupture was wrong."
"What did it say?"
"It was an invitation. An offer. The entity was willing to provide a suitable consciousness for transfer in exchange for one thing." His eyes met mine. "You. The entity wanted you specifically. Not just any test subject. You. Satori Nakano. The son of Kenji Nakano and Kimiko Nakano. The child who had not yet been conceived when I received the message."
My blood ran cold.
"The entity knew about me before I was born."
"The entity knows about everything. Every possibility. Every probability. Every branching path of causality extending into the infinite future." He closed the notebook. "It selected you because of something you will do. Something that hasn’t happened yet. Something that the entity either wants to enable or wants to prevent. I don’t know which."
"And you accepted its offer anyway."
"I had no choice." His voice hardened. "The alternative was watching humanity stumble blindly toward extinction. The Gates are getting stronger. The monsters are evolving. The Aspects we’ve developed are not enough. Sooner or later, something will come through that we can’t stop. Something that will end us."
"So you decided to play along with a cosmic horror’s game on the chance that it might give us a fighting chance."
"I decided to give humanity a weapon that might be able to fight back. A human being with the ability to interact with trans-dimensional energy on levels we’ve never achieved. A bridge between what we are and what we need to become to survive."
I stood up from the table. The chair scraped against the wooden floor.
"You’re telling me that my entire existence is the result of a deal between my father and an unknowable entity that may or may not want humanity to survive."
"Yes."
"That everything I’ve accomplished, everything I’ve become, everything I care about, might be nothing more than a cosmic chess piece being moved into position."
"Yes."
"And you expect me to just accept that?"
Kenji Nakano looked up at me. For the first time since I had arrived, I saw something other than the cold scientist in his eyes. Something that might have been love. Or regret. Or both.
"I expect you to do what you’ve always done, son. Survive. Adapt. Turn someone else’s game into your own." He smiled faintly. "That’s why the entity chose you in the first place. Not because of anything I did. Because of who you are. Who Kaelen Leone was. The kind of person who refuses to accept the rules as given."
The pendant flared hot against my chest. Natalia’s emotions flooding through our bond. Fear and anger and determination.
And beneath it all, acceptance.
She believed him. Believed this insane story about cosmic entities and dimensional consciousness and a father who had literally sold his son’s soul before the son was even born.
Maybe because it made too much sense to be a lie.
"The file," I said. "The source acquisition logs. Where are they?"
"Hidden. Encoded. Scattered across multiple locations that only I can access." He stood and crossed to a small safe in the corner of the cabin. "But I have something for you. Something I’ve been preparing since the day you manifested your Aspect."
He opened the safe and withdrew a small device. It looked like a USB drive crossed with a crystal, glowing faintly with inner light.
"This contains everything. The complete Prometheus Protocol. The entity’s original message. My decoded translation. The coordinates of every hidden cache. And most importantly, the key to unlocking your full potential."
"My full potential."
"The consciousness transfer was only the first step. The integration only the second. There’s a third step that I never had the chance to complete. A process that would allow you to access the full power of what you’ve become." He held out the device. "Take it. Use it. Become what you were meant to be."
I looked at the glowing crystal in his hand. At the promise of power beyond anything I had imagined. At the final piece of a puzzle that had been driving me since I woke up in this body with another man’s memories rattling inside my skull.
"What’s the catch?"
"The catch is that once you start, you can’t stop. The process will change you in ways I can’t predict. You might become something more than human. You might become something less. The entity designed this path, and the entity does not share its goals with anyone."
"Great sales pitch."
"I’m not selling you anything. I’m giving you a choice. The only real choice that matters." He pressed the device into my palm. "You can walk away. Live your life. Build your kingdom of beautiful women and political alliances. The entity might leave you alone. It might not. But you would be choosing to remain what you are rather than becoming what you could be."
"Or?"
"Or you take this. Follow the path. Discover what’s waiting at the end." His eyes burned with something ancient and terrible. "And maybe, just maybe, give humanity a fighting chance against the thing that’s coming."
I looked at the crystal in my hand. At my father standing before me. At the cabin filled with eighteen years of obsessive research.
The pendant pulsed against my chest. Natalia’s voice echoed in my mind, carried across hundreds of miles by the bond we shared.
I closed my fingers around the crystal.
"Tell me everything."
