Damon discovers unknown entities are destroying his Shadow drones within the Anarchy Mountains. He prepares a new, advanced Shadow drone, designed as a vessel for his consciousness, to track the threat. Meanwhile, he decides to protect Ric, even if it means revealing the truth and risking political fallout, believing compassion is more important than logic.

The Demon Wars had started a few years ago and ended shortly after the siege of the Demon Continent. The reason for that was the Outsiders.

And of course, the fact that the demons had pushed them back.

But that wasn’t what Abellona was investigating.

She was investigating a demon called Ash.

She had first gotten information about him after humanity began working together with the demons to fight a greater threat.

Ash had last been seen around the time Damon was in the demon city of Trace.

Of course, Damon had achieved many great things there, but that wasn’t what she was looking into.

She was investigating this mysterious demon named Ash, who had seemingly appeared from nowhere before vanishing just as suddenly.

Every trace of him had been erased.

Anyone who had seen him had later been killed by a demon woman of unknown origin.

Even several demon heirs had mysteriously died during the war.

The few who survived simply refused to speak.

Abellona suspected those demons who remained silent might have been affiliated with the Unknown Order.

That alone was odd.

As a result, the information she possessed regarding Ash was painfully limited.

She had questioned the team that accompanied Damon.

She had even questioned Damon himself.

But Damon claimed he had fought every notable demon in Trace and that none of them were worth remembering.

He had even spent most of the conversation boasting about his own strength.

Naturally...

She concluded that the Unknown Order had infiltrated the demons, meaning whatever information she had uncovered was likely false.

Once again...

She had reached another dead end.

Abellona let out a long sigh.

She really wished Damon were here.

Maybe spending a night together would finally get her mind off all of this...

She was lying lazily across a sofa, one arm draped over her forehead.

That bastard still hadn’t given their relationship a name.

And yet...

He was still having his way with her whenever he pleased.

This wasn’t how she had imagined her life turning out.

She had once had countless marriage prospects.

It wasn’t that she didn’t want anyone.

She simply wanted the one man she could never truly have.

The door slowly opened.

A maid stepped inside, bowed respectfully, and remained near the entrance.

"Princess."

"Your guests have arrived."

Abellona didn’t move.

Long strands of dark hair covered her crimson eyes as she stared blankly at the ceiling.

She didn’t even care that one of her maids was watching her behave in such an unprincess-like manner.

After another small groan, she finally sat upright before speaking calmly.

"You may invite them in."

This was Abellona’s personal wing of the palace.

Within these halls, she held absolute authority.

After reaching her current level of power, there were very few people left who could openly challenge her.

The throne was practically hers already.

A few siblings still competed against her.

None of them possessed her fame.

None of them possessed her backing.

Yet...

If the truth about her relationship with Damon ever became public...

She could lose everything.

The door opened once more.

Two women entered together.

One was the elegant yet mysterious Terra Hightower.

The other...

Was her younger sister.

Emilia.

The two daughters of House Hightower.

Though Emilia was now married to Xander Ravenscroft and was therefore known as Lady Ravenscroft.

"Welcome."

Abellona greeted them with the usual formal courtesies.

The two women returned the greeting in kind before taking their seats.

Terra was no stranger to Abellona.

For nearly seven years they had worked together investigating the Unknown Order.

They had achieved a handful of victories.

But far more defeats.

The Unknown Order had sunk its roots deep into countless factions.

It possessed unimaginable wealth and influence.

Things had only become worse after the destruction of the Holy City.

Now that the Temple’s authority had crumbled, the powers that once hid beneath its shadow had begun emerging into the light, spreading chaos wherever they went.

Even with the god Aetherus standing on humanity’s side...

Amon had proven he wasn’t all powerful.

And once people realized that...

There was no longer any reason to fear him.

A god had appeared.

And suddenly...

Everyone had become an unbeliever.

Emilia was the first to speak.

She gently set her teacup onto the table before looking toward Abellona.

"We’ve come to discuss a matter related to the last Demon Wars."

Abellona raised an eyebrow.

"The Demon Wars are over."

"Why would you be interested in that now? We have far more dangerous enemies to face."

Emilia nodded.

"I know."

"However, I also know you’re interested in Amon and his origins."

"I believe the last Demon Wars are far more connected to all of this than we first realized."

"You participated in that war, didn’t you?"

Abellona slowly crossed her arms over her chest, the soft red fabric of her dress shifting gently against her skin.

"I did."

"I served as one of Seras Blade’s squires."

"I imagine that’s why you’ve come to me."

"Since Seras isn’t here."

Terra nodded with a faint smile.

"Exactly."

"Which means you were serving within the same military division as Godric Ravenscroft."

"I was."

Abellona closed her eyes for a moment, trying to recall memories from years ago.

Back then she had only been a teenager.

The war had been unimaginably bloody.

Seras always fought on the front lines.

It was during that war that Abellona earned her fame.

She slowly opened her eyes again.

"Military divisions are enormous."

"They’re split into countless chains of command."

"While I met Godric Ravenscroft several times, he wasn’t the only commander I encountered."

"There were many nobles acting as officers."

"Thousands upon thousands of soldiers were divided into squads, companies, battalions, and regiments."

"Sometimes our own battalion would go weeks without seeing another."

"We would only meet again when everyone gathered at Division Headquarters."

She wanted them to understand just how massive the battlefield truly was.

"Yes."

"I know that."

Emilia’s voice carried obvious impatience.

"I questioned several former members of Godric’s battalion."

"They all told me that one of his squads was wiped out because they failed to follow orders."

"But when I searched the military archives..."

"There was no such incident."

"Not even the names of the soldiers who belonged to that squad remained."

Abellona slowly narrowed her eyes.

"Hmm..."

"It’s possible Godric had the records erased."

"I did hear a rumor that he once got into a disagreement with someone before having that person expelled."

"Originally..."

"The order called for their execution."

"But Seras personally denied it."

"Instead, the soldier received a dishonorable discharge."

She frowned slightly.

She remembered the day Seras signed that order.

She had never seen who the soldier was.

Nor had she known the details.

The Demon Wars had been cruel.

Deserters were hardly uncommon.

"We need to find those records," Emilia said firmly.

Abellona slowly shook her head.

"If someone from one of the Great Houses erased them..."

"Trust me."

"They did a thorough job."

Emilia bit down on her lip until the metallic taste of blood filled her mouth.

She already knew that.

She had only hoped Abellona might remember something.

Abellona studied her for a moment before smiling faintly.

"So..."

"You came here hoping I could tell you what happened."

"Because memories aren’t as easily erased as documents."

"There must still be someone alive who witnessed that day."

She slowly rose from her seat.

A spark of interest appeared within her crimson eyes.

"I’m interested now."

"Why don’t we investigate together?"

"We can’t reach Seras Blade."

"No one has been able to for the last three years."

"But..."

"She has continued sending messages."

"So at least we know she’s still alive."

She turned toward the door and beckoned to them.

"Let’s go."
