[Path to Conflict]
There was a smile on his face.
His mana had changed on a level beyond what anyone in the world possessed. In terms of sheer reserves Damon was now far, far ahead of everyone else.
It almost made him remember the days when his mana had still been measured in double digits.
His body overflowed with power. Every breath seemed to stir the mana around him and even standing still felt unnatural, as though his body had become too vast for the world to comfortably contain.
Damon slowly flexed his fingers.
The air around his hand rippled.
He frowned, curling his hand into a fist before relaxing it again. Invisible waves spread through the surrounding space as though reality itself had become a calm lake disturbed by the slightest movement.
"So this is what the peak of the Sixth Class feels like..."
He lowered his gaze toward his skill list.
That was admittedly a little disappointing.
He hadn’t really gained any new skills in quite some time. He still had several empty skill slots but never found anything worth occupying them with.
Though the system had rewarded him with several skill scrolls over the years. He had simply thrown them into his miscellaneous storage without a second thought.
He would probably have to go through them later and decide which ones deserved a place among his Sixth Class abilities.
Closing the panel with a thought, Damon slowly raised his hand again.
His fingers reached toward the empty air.
The world seemed to yield beneath them.
The space before him stretched like soft cloth caught between his fingertips before snapping back into place with a faint ripple.
A slow smile spread across his face.
He felt powerful.
And what better way was there to measure power than standing before the strongest being in the world.
This would tell him exactly where he stood.
"That’s an incredibly stupid way to find out."
Ashcroft’s voice echoed through his mind.
Damon rolled his eyes.
"Shut up. Fighting Aetherus isn’t crazy. It’s research. I just want to probe his abilities besides I’ll only be using my Shadow Clone."
"An even better reason for you to lose. Steal everything and leave."
Ashcroft’s tone was completely serious.
Damon scoffed, lifting his chin slightly.
"You’re scared."
Ashcroft gave a contemptuous sneer.
"Please die painfully."
A thin grin tugged at the corner of Damon’s lips.
Only then did he realize Evangeline had been staring at him the entire time.
She still maintained the barrier around them, watching him stand there smiling to himself while silently arguing with someone who didn’t exist.
"...Are you okay?"
She asked cautiously.
Damon blinked before clearing his throat with all the dignity he could muster.
"Of course I am... I’ve simply decided this battle has become far too dangerous. We should go meet up with Ranar immediately. As a responsible father I must prioritize protecting my daughter."
Evangeline simply stared at him.
"...I’ve literally been telling you that this whole time."
Her eyes drifted past Damon toward the countless Shadow Drones locked in battle against the Templar Knights.
"I don’t think those people are going to let us walk away without a fight."
Damon followed her gaze.
His shadow drones.
His own minions.
Naturally they would let him pass.
Unfortunately everyone else needed to believe otherwise.
He slowly raised one hand toward the heavens.
Evangeline instinctively looked up.
Her pupils contracted.
The sky had disappeared.
No...
It had been swallowed by swords.
Thousands upon thousands of black blades floated overhead until they blotted out the light itself, each one humming with enough destructive mana to flatten entire districts.
"Wait... wait Damon."
Her voice became noticeably strained.
"This is the Holy City."
"You can’t destroy religious sites."
Damon didn’t answer.
He simply lowered his hand.
"[Magical Arsenal.]"
The countless swords descended.
Like a meteor shower.
The sound alone was deafening, tearing across the heavens like the roar of an ancient beast. Everyone instinctively looked up and for a fleeting moment they were captivated by the sight. Countless black swords hung suspended in the sky, blotting out the sun like a sea of obsidian stars. It possessed an almost ephemeral beauty, but beauty was always temporary, and what followed was its true nature.
Horror.
Death in the form of shadows descended from the heavens.
The earth rumbled violently beneath the impact as thousands of blades crashed into the city. Streets split apart, buildings buckled and collapsed, and an immense cloud of dust burst upward with such force that it swallowed entire districts of the Holy City.
