Ling Mo suspects that Chuchu and the "perfect body" zombie are connected and that Chuchu's evolution may be incomplete. He decides he needs to see Chuchu again to investigate further, despite her being a dangerous zombie. Meanwhile, Su Qianrou is busy managing supplies at the former Falcon Camp, and Zhang Yu arrives with a large group of familiar faces and impressive new gear. Ling Mo receives news of his reputation skyrocketing after taking down Falcon Camp, and new arrivals, including a bashful girl and a domineering woman with a machine gun, are eager to see him.

Ten minutes later, an excited voice echoed outside Ling Mo’s door: “Excuse me, is the Chief Commander available now? Two guests wish to see him!”

The door was opened by Yu Shiran… It’s not that this Zombie Loli willingly acted as Ling Mo’s secretary, but she truly wasn’t accustomed to being in crowds… This place was like a giant buffet, with delicacies walking around right in front of her, completely defenseless. Over the past few days, she had silently ruined several sofas. By staying closer to Ling Mo, she became more restrained.

As for Ban Yue and the others, Ling Mo simply arranged for them to go up to the rooftop for some fresh air.

Even so, he had cleared out all personnel from the building, leaving only the squirrel and other Researchers. They were also restricted to the basement.

This action actually elevated Ling Mo’s prestige in the new Base even higher… Individuals who act differently always appear more mysterious.

However, the visitors today didn't perceive it that way. As soon as the door swung open, Gu Shuangshuang eagerly began: “Captain, you’ve become a hands-off boss again…”

But she halted mid-sentence because the adorable little girl before her was drooling as she stared. In Yu Shiran’s own words, if you can't eat, looking is sufficient. Yet, her gaze and expression could potentially frighten others—whether that was a concern was no longer within the scope of her consideration.

“You’re very pretty, can you help call Ling Mo out?” The woman in the Tight Leather Suit behind Gu Shuangshuang stepped forward, interrupting the strange encounter. She was Lucy, who had assisted Ling Mo in transporting supplies numerous times but had never met him, the one responsible for seeking out those supplies. Even just following behind to collect the spoils, Lucy and her group were deeply shocked. These areas were clearly occupied by Zombies, especially one spot that was practically a Zombie nest, yet Ling Mo still managed to clear them out.

Were it not for him paving the way, Miracle Base alone likely couldn't have secured these warehouses. Thanks to these provisions, the Base could rapidly reorganize and enhance its combat strength after Ling Mo took down Falcon. Moreover, the continuous food supply infused the new Base with more vitality than ever before.

Lucy immensely admired Ling Mo's deeds. Consequently, whenever an opportunity arose, she was eager to meet him. But why was the door opened by such an odd-looking little girl? The drool at the corner of her mouth, the wild eyes, the peculiar smile…

If she hadn't quickly stated their objective, Lucy felt her imagination might have run wild. Even more frightening, upon careful consideration, Ling Mo genuinely might perform such an action…

“He's in the Inner Room.” Yu Shiran didn't bother wiping her drool, nor did she shift her gaze to summon someone from the Inner Room. She didn't even step back to welcome Lucy and the others inside.

Yet, this self-muttering voice was actually heard by someone within the Inner Room, more than thirty feet away…

“Who’s here?”

However, the one who emerged wasn't Yu Shiran, but another little girl who appeared even younger.

Black Silk, upon spotting the two visitors, also began to drool… Actually, she possessed greater self-control, but being a symbiote with Yu Shiran, she felt almost exactly the same.

Next came Li Yalin… The Senior Sister wasn't much better in this regard, though she managed to articulate: “I recall both of you. Haven’t seen you in a while; you've become a bit more… delectable. Ah, it's a pity Xia Na and Ye Lian aren't here, or they'd be quite pleased too.”

“You’ve become prettier too.” Lucy was taken aback for a moment, then responded. Delectable… that’s quite a metaphorical term, essentially meaning “sexy,” right? Lucy assumed so. Furthermore, these three girls were typically very reserved, yet unexpectedly, they were so amiable and welcoming…

Gu Shuangshuang’s cheeks flushed… While she admired Ling Mo, she never imagined she could rival the girls around him. Rationally, she accepted this, but in reality, she occasionally felt a pang of jealousy. Hearing the compliment now, Gu Shuangshuang realized she was actually quite pleased and felt embarrassed that such a pretty girl would offer praise.

Li Yalin herself didn't dwell on it much. Her immediate instinct was to use the Consciousness Web to broadcast to everyone: “Two superhuman humans; they look genuinely appetizing. Do you wish to come over and satisfy your cravings? Ling Mo is unaware yet…”

Such is the straightforward nature of Zombie thought processes… The first recipient on the “group send list” was Ling Mo, who hurried out to put an end to this exceptionally peculiar scene.

“Lucy?” Ling Mo expressed surprise, then greeted her.

Lucy’s expression was peculiar as she remarked, “It’s been a while, you’re still the same old you, especially concerning girls.” The latter part of her statement carried an obvious implication, delivered with a teasing lilt. Ling Mo, missing the nuance, could only offer an awkward chuckle. Truthfully, the situation had become even more bizarre than before. If he’d foreseen this, he might have simply allowed everyone to witness it…

Gu Shuangshuang’s eyes immediately welled up, and overcome with emotion, she bolted towards Ling Mo, enveloping him in a hug. “Captain.”

As she released him, Lucy, feeling it would be impolite not to join in, stepped forward and embraced him as well. “Long time no see.”

Initially, her tone held a hint of reserve, but with the embrace, time seemed to melt away unnoticed.

It truly had been a considerable period since their last meeting…

It wasn’t until Gu Shuangshuang, standing nearby, began to wear a puzzled look that Lucy abruptly realized her actions and quickly pulled away from Ling Mo.

“Actually, it hasn’t been that long. I’ve been thinking about all of you,” Ling Mo said with a smile, deftly shifting the focus of the conversation. “Who brought you ladies here?”

“An Officer… huh? Where did he go?” Gu Shuangshuang, still buoyed by Ling Mo’s words, nervously glanced down the corridor, only to find it completely deserted.

Ling Mo’s brow furrowed in slight confusion before he steered the topic yet again. “You’ve arrived at an opportune moment. Lucy, I was intending to have you oversee the training of the superhumans, divide them into combat units for Tom, and regarding the Miracle Squad, you could collaborate with them to establish a specialized elite force…”

“…Is that how you perceive us?”

However, as Ling Mo elaborated, Lucy was the first to grasp the critical reality: his time was rapidly diminishing. The Base he had painstakingly established was under threat of imminent destruction. Should that occur, even if Ling Mo survived, he would be left adrift, like a tree uprooted.

Ling Mo, however, viewed the gravity of the situation even more intensely… If such an outcome materialized, Ye Lian and the others, along with himself, would become prime targets. His current actions were merely the initial phase of preparations, with every subsequent move being a desperate race against the clock.

Consequently, he had no capacity to dwell on anything else; all his efforts were concentrated on confronting this looming crisis.

Naturally, given Ling Mo’s resolute character, he could maintain a smile regardless of the immense pressure. Thus, when Lucy and Gu Shuangshuang displayed expressions of deep concern, he offered another reassuring smile. “Relax, you’ll still get paid. Don’t look at me as if I’m taking advantage of you, alright?”

“Pfft.” Gu Shuangshuang let out a giggle. While the underlying fear persisted, wasn’t that what their captain had said? At the very least, their salaries remained secure.

Lucy also managed a faint smile before replying, “I understand. I’ll make the most of every moment. By the way, what are you occupied with right now?”

She harbored a degree of worry for Ling Mo, sensing that he was only revealing a portion of the truth. This was his way – even if one knew he held many secrets, the wisest course was to let them be, rather than probe for answers. Having known Ling Mo for a significant duration, Lucy was keenly aware of this.

Therefore, her concern was genuine, yet she refrained from demanding explanations.

Ling Mo appreciated Lucy’s cooperative disposition but responded, “I’m in a state of adjustment.”

Indeed, he was adjusting, striving to attain peak readiness for the impending confrontation that could erupt without warning…

As for this crucial information… he had, for the moment, shared it only with those he implicitly trusted.

A stable Base could offer support, but a Base riddled with fear would inevitably become a liability.

Currently, his only recourse was to await the destined moment. When that time truly arrived, the indomitable resilience of humanity would undoubtedly resurface…

Emerging from the main entrance downstairs, Wu Pengfei surveyed the bustling activity outside.

For reasons he couldn’t quite articulate, a sense of profound relief washed over him.

They were once comrades, but now, it was imperative to fulfill the role of a subordinate…

When he could finally face his old friend with an unburdened conscience, ready to express his gratitude for past assistance with head held high, he would bring a bottle of wine and engage in a heartfelt conversation.

Perhaps then, they could momentarily escape the bleak reality of this era, this despairing environment, and reminisce about their wild, youthful days, discuss trivial matters, perhaps sneak a cigarette or two, and muse, “Hey, have you ever imagined what it would be like if the apocalypse struck? Sometimes, thinking about it, it actually sounds kind of thrilling.”

“Thrilling, my ass.” That was likely the response his old friend would give, wasn’t it?

But returning to the present, the very person who once might have harbored such idle thoughts now stood at the pinnacle of these thousands of Survivors.

“Good luck,” Wu Pengfei whispered, uncertain whether his words were directed at himself or his long-lost friend.

Simultaneously, on the upper floor, Ling Mo seemed to sense something and directed his gaze towards the window.

This somber, gray sky – who could tell when it would finally bestow its clear light?
