My Girlfriend is a Zombie Chapter 1339: My name is Zheng
Previously on My Girlfriend is a Zombie...
Blood… a roaring sound… Five minutes later, tranquility once again descended. Yet, amidst the several freshly obliterated corpses, only a single figure painfully managed to rise.
He was missing an arm, and a significant portion of flesh had been gouged from his face. After a fleeting look at the bodies scattered around him, his eyes, which had moments before been streaming with tears, instantly became vacant…
“Very good.” The Zombie descended again, its voice laced with satisfaction. “What is your name?”
The injured figure, lost in a daze, took a moment before his mouth managed to expel a single word: “Zheng… Zheng…”
“Zheng Zheng? Not bad, you are the final superhuman to endure this trial. Next, you merely need to consume a genuine Zombie, and you shall mutate, becoming one of us.” The Zombie declared.
“I am… the last one?” Zheng Zheng’s body trembled as he voiced the question.
In truth, he didn’t require an answer… Immediately after posing the question, he abruptly lifted his eyelids to fixate on the Zombie. Then, with a fierce lunge, he attacked. The very instant he sprang forward, an inexplicable light flickered within his eyes. The Zombie, which should have instantly unfurled its grotesque wings to escape, appeared to be paralyzed, frozen in place. Subsequently, the wariness that had previously clouded its eyes vanished. It even proactively tilted its head back, exposing its own throat.
Even as Zheng Zheng’s teeth tore into its flesh, ripping open its throat, the Zombie maintained a smile, whispering, “Eat, eat me, hahaha…”
…
“You’re suggesting… those individuals from the Central Region Camp were actually abducted by Zombies?” Within the Miracle Base, Ling Mo inquired, his expression grim, after absorbing Lin Luanqiu’s detailed account.
Lin Luanqiu nodded with solemnity. “Indeed. Many presumed they perished back then, but in reality, amidst the pandemonium, I once witnessed a Survivor who had just been attacked. He wasn’t dead, merely incapacitated by a Zombie. This deviates from typical Zombie behavior. When did they develop such restraint? However, that isn’t the critical point. I observed that all those who were knocked unconscious were superhumans. Despite the Zombies committing fully, their primary targets were these superhumans.”
“So, you hypothesize they didn’t merely transport these individuals back as sustenance, but for a more significant objective?” Ling Mo’s brow furrowed. The bat had informed him that this was to facilitate the superior evolution of the Zombies’ mutation abilities, but judging by Lin Luanqiu’s grave demeanor, there was evidently more to the situation.
Neither of them was inclined to deceive. Therefore, that implied…
“The Zombies require a select few anomalous superhumans. The remainder are designated for the Blood Feast. Thus, what is the fundamental distinction between the Blood Feast and these specific superhumans?” Abruptly, Ling Mo recalled the cadaver discovered in the Laboratory. He rose instantly, stating, “I believe I comprehend their objective. Accompany me.”
Ye Lian and the others were also present in the Laboratory… Ever since the squirrel had extended an invitation, these Female Zombies had exhibited an intense fascination with their ongoing research. However, the squirrel and Director Huang, perhaps unable to discern the difference between mere curiosity and genuine investment, almost entirely accommodated the Female Zombies’ extensive requests, despite their earnest efforts.
The reason for not fulfilling every single one was because…
“That’s a mutated Monkey.”
“May we consume it?”
“This is an organ extracted from a mutated zombie. Observe, it has already transformed completely, bearing no resemblance to a human organ.”
“May we consume it?”
Consequently, upon entering the Laboratory and encountering a conspicuously large warning sign – ‘Experimental Subjects Are Not Edible’ – Ling Mo felt no surprise. Lin Luanqiu, conversely, gasped, her hand covering her mouth as she remarked, “I’ve heard that things specifically flagged with warnings often pertain to incidents that have already transpired.”
“Falcon’s transgression.” Ling Mo nonchalantly attributed the blame to the preceding team.
“Come observe this. This represents an exceedingly flawless Zombie cadaver…” Ling Mo announced as he pushed open the door. Yet, a figure was already present inside. Upon recognizing this individual, he was instantly taken aback.
“Ye Lian?”
Ye Lian stood in a completely motionless posture beside the glass coffin. As Ling Mo approached her, her large, expressive eyes were quietly fixated upon the corpse contained within the ice coffin. Ling Mo’s expression shifted once more, as he detected no primal urge to Devour the corpse emanating from Ye Lian’s emotional state. Her current thoughts were not centered on consumption…
So, merely observing? No, Zombies did not operate on such principles. For them to analyze something, it must invariably correlate with evolution – perhaps as sustenance, or an impetus for aggression.
But what utterly baffled Ling Mo was his inability to perceive any such stimulus.
“Ye Lian?” Ling Mo softly called out again, his voice close to her ear.
Ye Lian’s ears twitched subtly. She turned her head to briefly glance at Ling Mo before returning her gaze to the cadaver. “She failed.”
“What? How did she fail?” Ling Mo’s heart lurched, and he hastily inquired. Ye Lian seldom initiated conversation independently these days, but as time progressed, her inherent confusion had undeniably lessened significantly compared to earlier periods.
“She was meant to become a true…” Ye Lian paused, her words trailing off before she shook her head. “I do not know.”
Nevertheless, in that precise moment, Ling Mo distinctly perceived a shift in her emotions: “You aspire to be like her? No, you desire to achieve what she aimed to be after her success?”
He conveyed this thought directly into Ye Lian’s mind, and she responded in kind.
She gazed at the deceased within the ice coffin for a significant duration, then softly uttered, "It is exceedingly arduous… I, I am afforded but a single opportunity…"
An opportunity?! Ling Mo felt his heart falter, nearly ceasing its beat. He suddenly grasped many things… The distinctive circumstances surrounding Ye Lian’s condition stemmed from her potential to transform into a perfect Zombie?!
But how had this come to pass? In a fleeting instant, countless particulars surged through Ling Mo’s consciousness… Ye Lian’s personal journal, her conduct in various minor matters… No, no, these might not be the underlying reasons. The sole individual possessing true knowledge of the 'why' was likely Ye Lian herself.
"Is something amiss?" Lin Luanqiu waited with consideration at the doorway for a spell, but observing Ling Mo’s silence and bewildered state, she inquired with a puzzled tone.
Only then did Ling Mo recall his initial objective for venturing here. He cast a glance toward Ye Lian and transmitted his thoughts into her mind, "With me at your side, it shall not be so arduous. Furthermore, we shall not meet the same fate as her – we are assured of success, do you comprehend? However, for the moment, I must ascertain the true nature of this phenomenon."
"Very well." Ye Lian nodded obediently, then extended her hand to tenderly caress Ling Mo’s cheek.
It was merely a gesture of reliance and affection, yet the pure gaze and graceful movement of the Female Zombie caused Lin Luanqiu to momentarily freeze.
After Ye Lian departed, Lin Luanqiu offered Ling Mo a smile. "Your bond remains as strong as ever; truly something to be envied."
Yet, subsequent to uttering these words, she immediately approached the ice coffin and commenced a meticulous examination.
"This…" After merely a few observations, Lin Luanqiu’s visage adopted a grave expression.
"This is a perfect Zombie," Ling Mo proactively completed her sentence.
Lin Luanqiu drew a breath and affirmed, "Indeed…"
"And despite its repose within the ice coffin, it genuinely appears as though merely asleep. This signifies that its bodily functions have attained an exceptionally elevated state – even without the preservative effect of the ice coffin, decomposition would not commence within a short period." Lin Luanqiu, possessed of an admirably composed intellect, swiftly recovered from her astonishment and commenced a rapid analysis of the situation.
However, upon concluding her assessment, she regarded Ling Mo with a discernible hint of questioning. Plainly, Ling Mo had not brought her to this location solely for the purpose of revealing this deceased specimen.
What surprised her further was that, perceiving her reaction, Ling Mo actually displayed a faint flicker of disappointment and pressed onward: "Is this your inaugural encounter with a Zombie of this caliber?"
"Yes…" Lin Luanqiu could not feasibly fabricate falsehoods regarding such a matter, and thus she nodded, subsequently posing her own query in return, "Are you suggesting this Zombie possesses a connection to Central City?"
"Not precisely…" Ling Mo swiftly realigned his emotional state and articulated, "To be more accurate, it is associated with the Zombie Zone from which the City Lord originates. Those Zombies are distinct from our kind – they have genuinely established a society. The information I previously received indicated that humans were to be maintained as 'livestock,' but based upon your account, that constitutes merely one facet of the truth… My apologies, I find myself somewhat disoriented. Allow me to commence by outlining the two known fragments of information I possess thus far."
"Fragments of information?" Lin Luanqiu had presumed that her own statement constituted the sole piece of intel… In truth, she had only disclosed those details to prompt Ling Mo into contemplating the Zombies' true intentions, thereby enabling him to be better prepared. She had not anticipated that Ling Mo would possess additional clues.
She suddenly sensed an inadequacy in her understanding of Ling Mo. It appeared that his experiences during this interval might be considerably more profound than her own.
"Indeed, one pertains to the Spider Queen. Have you chanced to hear of her?" Ling Mo made mention of Stella. He had consistently anticipated that the Spider Queen would seek him out, yet her appearance had been strangely absent, a fact that had surprised him. However, now, with the entirety of the Miracle Base providing him with support, as long as he remained within its confines, he harbored no apprehension regarding her eventual emergence.
Lin Luanqiu offered him a subtly reproachful glance… Did he truly believe that everyone possessed his extraordinary capabilities? Merely by hearing the appellation, it evoked a sense of dread – how could one so readily obtain information about such an individual?
Ling Mo was merely inquiring casually, for even before Lin Luanqiu could respond, he continued, "That young girl, Anan, the 'cocoon' present on her abdomen, and the Spider Queen’s 'seed' bear striking resemblances in their fundamental nature. Furthermore, there exists another Zombie – she bears similarities to this one, having achieved the state of a perfect Zombie before succumbing. Or, more accurately, she is likely a flawed iteration of this particular type."
"Her designation is Chuchu. I encountered her not long ago."
