Old Lan suggests that the zombie outbreak might be a grand, ongoing experiment with humans as the primary subjects. Before he can reveal more, his communicator abruptly cuts out after a strange "shhh" sound, followed by screams and a physical struggle. Ling Mo learns Old Lan has been incapacitated, leaving him to investigate the mysterious attack and the implications of his companion's research.

Ling Mo swiftly delivered a slap to the squirrel's rear, exclaiming, “You’re the one making the most noise!”

“Ow… My apologies… Wait, did you just slap my backside?!” the squirrel yelped, leaping up. By this moment, the approaching footsteps outside had grown quite loud.

“Squirrel?” a deep male voice inquired from the hallway.

The squirrel’s demeanor shifted instantly, and she stammered, “You all stay hidden here. I’ll handle this by myself.”

After the squirrel quickly shut the door and departed, Ling Mo pressed himself close to the window, cautiously observing the scene outside.

“That must be the head of the laboratory…”

Ling Mo mused to himself as he watched the squirrel approach a bald, middle-aged man.

“Squirrel, allow me to make some introductions.” The middle-aged man, possessing the air of a scholar, failed to notice the squirrel’s hurried state through his thick spectacles. Instead, he gestured with great enthusiasm towards the young woman beside him… and the small girl trailing behind her.

“This is Anan. She has knowledge of matters critically important. Fetch the recording device; we must document every word she speaks!”

Upon hearing the man’s fervent declaration, the little girl, Anan, instinctively drew back.

The young woman swiftly moved to shield the child, simultaneously extending an arm to intercept the middle-aged man.

“Director Huang, I empathize with your excitement, but this child is quite distressed at present. Your approach will only frighten her further. Permit me to converse with her instead,” the woman stated, her tone apologetic.

“Who is this person?” Ling Mo’s brow furrowed. She had appeared solely to obstruct his view!

Following Director Huang’s introduction, Ling Mo also found himself intrigued by the little girl, particularly noting the expression in her eyes as she concealed herself behind the woman.

For reasons unknown, Ling Mo felt a persistent sensation that the little girl was directing her gaze toward him.

And when he diverted his attention from the child, another peculiar feeling arose.

That woman obscuring the little girl… why did she strike him as familiar?

“In what way does she seem familiar?” Xia Na inquired.

“Her hips.”

Regrettably, the woman’s hat was pulled low, and she remained focused on comforting the little girl with her head bowed, allowing Ling Mo only a fleeting glimpse of her hips. Seeing her face clearly was impossible.

As for the man who had stepped forward to speak…

“Greetings, I am Zhang Dongyao,” he said with a smile, extending his hand toward the squirrel.

However, after a brief moment of staring at his outstretched hand, the squirrel turned her attention back to the little girl, urging, “Quickly, speak with her.”

Two literary types…

Facing the awkwardness of his ignored gesture, Zhang Dongyao merely smiled, then casually retracted his hand and turned away.

“Anan…”

But before he could continue, the young woman interjected, “Anan has indicated she is willing to speak with you.”

Zhang Dongyao’s expression faltered momentarily. He cast a glance between the woman and the little girl before nodding, “That is… that is indeed good…”

“This individual emanates a potent killing intent,” Li Yalin’s voice reached Ling Mo.

“From the instant he emerged, he has endured rebuffs from strangers and his own associates. How could he not harbor killing intent?” Ling Mo concurred, then inquired with surprise, “Senior Sister, you can detect killing intent?”

“No, but his breathing became ragged, his heart rate surged, and he radiated danger. If I were in that position, I would undoubtedly have attacked him,” Li Yalin replied, her gaze fixed forward.

So that was the reason… Senior Sister’s senses had indeed grown remarkably acute.

“It would seem there are internal conflicts even among these Central Region survivors…” Ling Mo contemplated internally.

However, these developments held little of his interest… What crucial information did that little girl possess?

“Master, I recall having some impression of this little human,” the bat suddenly chirped.

“What do you mean?”

“She is one of our ‘guides’.” The bat dropped a startling revelation.

“It’s her?”

Remarkably, a little girl had been selected as a “guide”…

The “guides” the bat referred to were specific survivors whose scents they had meticulously memorized, enabling these survivors to lead them toward human settlements.

“But why her? Are you not concerned the ‘guide’ might perish en route?” Ling Mo found the choice peculiar.

The bat shook its head. “My apologies, Master, but that is the extent of my knowledge.”

“Then how did you come to memorize this little girl’s scent?” Ling Mo rephrased his query.

This time, the bat responded swiftly: “She was brought to our temporary lair.”

“…” Ling Mo’s expression shifted dramatically.

That little girl… she had somehow emerged alive from the midst of Central City’s zombie horde…

Yet, Ling Mo was quickly overcome by a strong premonition that whatever the little girl was about to disclose, it was unlikely to be the genuine truth.

“I observed it there,” Anan stated, her gaze fixed on the ground.

“Observed what? What do you refer to?” Zhang Dongyao appeared bewildered.

The squirrel and Director Huang exchanged a meaningful glance.

At that precise moment, Anan raised her hand and pointed directly towards the Laboratory where Ling Mo and his companions were concealed: “It is present there, right now.”

Multiple gazes instantly snapped in their direction.

“Damn it!”

Ling Mo swiftly pulled Li Yalin away from the window, cursing inwardly – this was an entirely unexpected turn of events!

He had anticipated she might offer a fabrication, allowing him insight into Central City’s machinations, but to his surprise, this young child had made a direct accusation!

“Did she memorize you as well?” Ling Mo inquired mentally, turning to the bat.

The bat shook its head innocently.

How could a human possibly memorize a scent…

“Then what was her intention just now!” Ling Mo continued to ’silently’ interrogate the bat.

The bat pondered for a moment before shaking its head once more.

Meanwhile, in the world outside, Director Huang’s voice could be heard: “Little girl, are you certain about this?”

“Mm…” Anan affirmed with a nod.

Zhang Dongyao regarded Anan with a visage full of skepticism. Just as he was about to question Director Huang, he observed the director making his way toward the Laboratory.

“Ah…” The squirrel’s countenance was etched with panic; she desperately wished to impede him, but…

“Director, I’ve developed a headache!”

“Just hold on a little longer.”

“My stomach is aching!”

“Endure it.”

“It’s my period!”

“Let it flow. That’s precisely how I managed my daughter back in the day.”

As the dialogue between the two individuals drew nearer, Ling Mo’s expression contorted into one of extreme displeasure… What sort of father is this! Yet, as he considered it, zombies are thankfully free from such… predicaments, otherwise, he truly wouldn't know how to cope… Alright, upon further reflection, there’s really nothing to criticize him about.

“Eh, Ling-Ge, are you perhaps envisioning us as your daughters?” Xia Na’s voice resonated within Ling Mo’s mind.

“Pfft!”

Ling Mo nearly bashed his head against the ground. What kind of exceptionally strange line of reasoning is this!

At this critical juncture, Director Huang, with resolute steps, finally reached the Laboratory door and grasped the handle.

As the doorknob began its slow rotation, the squirrel positioned outside could not bear to witness the scene and concealed her face…
