My Girlfriend is a Zombie Chapter 1328: Who Asked About That!

~7 minute read · 1,788 words

Ling Mo found himself utterly unprepared for the remarkably primitive and unrefined Laboratory he was currently in….

A series of operating tables stood assembled, surrounded by an abundance of bottles and jars. Most striking of all…

“What’s with this entire collection of diverse zombies?!” Ling Mo exclaimed, gesturing towards the iron cages suspended along the walls.

“Confining these zombies within cages that restrict their movement, keeping them suspended in mid-air – the intention is quite clear. This prevents them from exerting their full strength and escaping their confines…” Xia Na offered an explanation.

“Who inquired about that!”

“Xia Na is correct…” The squirrel, who clearly remembered Ling Mo and his companions, nodded. A peculiar, almost fanatical glint flickered behind her glasses. “These zombies were all apprehended by our special operations team from various locations within X City. While we may not possess every single variant, this collection is remarkably comprehensive.”

She indicated a zombie with severely malformed bones, its body contorted into a near-spherical shape. “This mutated specimen possesses the ability to shrink its form limitlessly, contort at will, and exhibits exceptional mobility, enabling it to traverse any type of terrain. We discovered it within a collapsed Underground Mall, leading us to initially hypothesize that its mutation was a direct result of the environment.”

“Isn’t that a logical conclusion?” Xu Shuhan inquired, her confusion evident as she produced her recorder.

“Haha, it certainly sounds plausible, of course. However, we later made some groundbreaking discoveries. The Director deemed this information highly classified, but you all appear to be trustworthy individuals…” The squirrel gestured for them to follow further into the facility.

Ling Mo followed closely behind, genuinely astonished by the squirrel at that very moment… A figure clad in a biohazard suit, meticulously holding a recorder – how could that possibly appear anything but suspicious?! As anticipated, the thought processes of an intellectual always seemed to operate on a different plane of comprehension…

“Behold that one.” The squirrel pointed towards a zombie confined in a distant corner.

Ling Mo’s initial glance was casual, but very quickly, his pupils constricted, and a distinct expression of shock registered on his face.

“What in the world is that?!”

Within the cage were several even smaller, more disturbingly deformed spherical zombies!

Due to their close proximity, Ling Mo initially mistook them for a single entity…

Ling Mo’s immediate thought was… could they possibly be offspring of the previously observed specimen? However, his keen eyesight quickly discerned that while these spherical zombies bore a striking resemblance to the former, critical differences were also apparent. The earlier zombie still maintained a semblance of its original human form, whereas these spherical types exhibited significantly more degenerated limbs.

“You’ve noticed, haven’t you? We discovered these zombies in a different location. When isolated, their individual strength is not substantial. However, they typically operate in perfect unison.” The squirrel elaborated.

Ling Mo’s brow furrowed as he observed them. He abruptly questioned, “You haven’t brought these zombies here merely to document their distinctions, have you? Your experiment appears to be of such paramount importance – what precisely is its objective?”

He had surmised that regardless of the squirrel’s eccentric thought patterns, she would likely offer a vague response at such a critical juncture. To his surprise, she simply smiled and replied indifferently, “Frankly, it’s nothing significant… Because, to be precise, it’s not even our experiment. We are genuinely engaged in observation.”

The squirrel guided them directly into another Laboratory. Within this chamber, only a single ice coffin was present.

Encased within lay an exceptionally perfect female zombie…

She was entirely unclothed, her physique exquisitely proportioned and elegantly formed, her skin a pale alabaster, intricately crisscrossed with fine crimson blood vessels. Though her eyes were closed, they somehow conveyed the piercing intensity of a wild beast’s stare. Moreover, her limbs appeared remarkably frail, and her fingers lacked any claws… Yet, despite these apparent weaknesses, she emanated a palpable sense of danger to Ling Mo. For reasons unknown, encountering her evoked a subtle feeling of familiarity within him.

That King-level Zombie, Chuchu, bore a striking resemblance to her…

“She is already deceased,” Li Yalin suddenly stated.

The squirrel acknowledged this with a nod. “Indeed, she is deceased; otherwise, we would not have the capability to keep her confined.”

Ling Mo exhaled a prolonged breath… In truth, from the very first moment he laid eyes on this zombie, he had instinctively known she was no longer alive.

However, it was precisely this fact that made the situation so astonishing… Even in death, she exuded such a potent aura of peril…

“This zombie’s combat prowess is actually not exceedingly formidable,” the squirrel suddenly declared, presenting a completely contrasting assessment.

“However, she represents, in every conceivable way, a truly distinct kind of Creature. You could perceive her as the transitional phase where zombies, upon reaching this stage of evolution, completely sever their ties with humanity and emerge as an entirely new species.” The squirrel continued, “Yet, this particular zombie perished immediately after her ‘emergence’. You must understand, obtaining an intact zombie corpse is an exceedingly rare occurrence. Thus, we surmise that numerous instances like hers may exist, though she is the only one we have thus far discovered.”

“But… why did she perish?” Black Silk inquired.

Upon hearing the question, the squirrel became aware of the little girl’s presence and displayed a flicker of surprise. Nevertheless, she proceeded with her explanation, “This is precisely the subject of our ongoing investigation. We hypothesize that a certain inherent flaw exists within its evolutionary process, leading to this outcome. However, the progression from non-existence to existence suggests that this flaw is continuously being refined throughout the course of evolution…”

“You want to retrieve it before this imperfection is perfected?” Ling Mo instantly grasped the squirrel’s intent.

However, the squirrel seemed momentarily taken aback, her mouth agape.

Though this expression was fleeting, Ling Mo perceived it with his usual keenness.

He inquired with mild surprise, “Do you harbor other thoughts on the matter?”

The squirrel paused briefly before responding, “I’ve only heard whispers…”

“That someone is interested in the perfection of this Creature and intends to attempt raising one, correct?” Xia Na hit the mark precisely.

The squirrel regarded her with evident surprise, then offered a nod.

Yet, she quickly began gesturing emphatically, stating, “But it’s not precisely for that reason…”

Ling Mo contemplated the corpse for a duration before abruptly posing a question, “Do you possess any Communicators here that operate beyond surveillance?”

“Huh?”

Being a squirrel, after all, she swiftly manipulated a Communicator and presented it to Ling Mo.

Upon establishing the connection, Ling Mo immediately invoked a name he hadn’t uttered in a considerable time: “Old Lan.”

“Who’s Old Lan? I’m Lan Lan!” A petulant female voice responded from the other end.

But before Ling Mo could utter another word, she suddenly shrieked, “Eh, this voice… you’re Ling Mo?!”

“Congratulations, your guess is accurate,” Ling Mo replied.

A sharp gasp emanated from the line, and just as Ling Mo braced for an unpleasant turn, Lan Lan erupted, “You actually remember to contact me!”

“Actually, I was hoping to speak with your father…”

“Do you have any idea how incredibly bored I’ve been!”

“How Members find their sources of entertainment doesn’t appear to fall within my purview of management. You are welcome to submit a formal complaint to Zhang Yu…”

“You simply abandoned us, your poor father and daughter, here and never looked back!”

“Why do I get the impression that the term ‘mother and son’ might fit the context more appropriately…”

“I’m utterly furious with you! You…”

“Enough!” Ling Mo commanded sternly, cutting her off abruptly. “It wasn’t as though I took advantage and then callously deserted you!”

“!!” Lan Lan fell silent for a moment, leaving one to wonder if she was figuratively spitting blood.

Ling Mo pressed on, “I have urgent matters to discuss with your father!”

A period of silence ensued, followed by an exceedingly enthusiastic male voice chiming in: “I’m engrossed in my research on the virus, and I’ve just unearthed a novel devour sequence, hahaha… Oh, by the way, Ling Mo, what is it that you require? And why did my daughter bolt away, her face flushed, calling you a pervert…”

“Perhaps mortified embarrassment? In any case, here’s the situation…” Ling Mo concisely recounted the details concerning the perfect-bodied Zombie.

Following his explanation, Old Lan remained silent for a considerable spell. When he finally spoke, his tone had shifted to one of gravity: “Ling Mo, have I ever previously informed you of my suspicion that the evolution of these Zombies presents a significant issue?”

“No,” Ling Mo confirmed with absolute certainty.

“Ah, in that case, I must have simply overlooked mentioning it.” Old Lan continued, “Nevertheless, this is critically important. Listen closely, I’ve formulated a rather daring hypothesis… However, to elaborate on this, we must first address a fundamental question.”

“Why did Zombies emerge? Was it an abrupt evolutionary leap for humanity, or perhaps a clandestine release of bio-weapons? Or could it be that the Earth itself perceives us as a contagion and is attempting to eradicate us? Each of these notions holds a degree of absurdity, yet they represent the prevailing theories, wouldn’t you agree? Everyone has pondered the origins of this cataclysm from these very perspectives. However, a substantial inconsistency arises: the mutations observed in plants and animals are distinctly different from our own circumstances, with instances of partial mutation alongside non-mutation. Furthermore, after a period of development, the virus propagated by Zombies has surpassed human tolerance levels. What is transpiring here? Why did Zombie mutations transition from initial uniformity to such boundless diversity over time? But this is not the crux of my intended discussion… My sole point is this: given that all existing theories possess critical inherent flaws, why do we not consider this phenomenon from an entirely novel vantage point?”

“What if we were to regard this entire catastrophe as an experiment in progress? What conclusions might we then derive?”

Old Lan concluded his statement and fell silent once more. Ling Mo, who had initially been somewhat adrift in thought, found himself profoundly struck by this perspective.

Indeed… when viewed from this angle, the situation… seemed to present itself with a startlingly new interpretation…

The squirrel standing nearby was equally astonished. Having overheard the entire exchange between Old Lan and Ling Mo via the speakerphone, her expression clearly indicated that this conversation had also ignited a fresh avenue of thought within her mind…
