The protagonist confronts a mysterious man who claims she consumed his essence and carries his offspring. She recalls a childhood memory of her father giving her something that the man identifies as his inner core. The next day, she develops a fever and vomits. Her mother takes her to an illegal taxi, intending to visit her uncle for help. On the way, her mother throws away a significant item into a ravine to sever the connection with the mysterious man. The protagonist's fever worsens, and their journey is halted by a village guardian who prevents them from proceeding by road.

"But my daughter, Su Wan, has a high fever," my mom said, her voice laced with worry. Seeing my critical condition, she reluctantly offered the driver fifty yuan. "Please, can you help us find a way to get by?"

The man pushed the money back, refusing. "The road ahead is too narrow, and Wang Erdan is an idiot. I can't just run him over, can I?"

My mother's face was etched with distress as she looked at my feverish, delirious state.

The driver's wife, impatient, issued an ultimatum. "We have other orders to fulfill and are in a hurry. It's not just your family, madam. Please, do as you see fit with your daughter."

I weakly croaked, my throat parched, "Mom... didn't... he say it was a chartered ride? Why is he taking other orders?"

My words caused the man's expression to darken.

His wife in the passenger seat also looked displeased.

It became clear why the fare was only one hundred yuan if he was already taking on other jobs.

"Forget it, Wanwan, let's not cause trouble," my mom advised, not wanting any further issues. "Anyway, your Uncle Chong Shun will be here soon."

I sighed and nodded in agreement.

Reluctantly, my mom and I exited the car.

The village guardian, Wang Erdan, was a fool, utterly clueless. He wore a tattered black coat and drooled from his mouth.

He approached us with a goofy grin. Wang Erdan, acting strangely, kept looking at me and mumbled, "Pretty girl, you've got a little baby inside. Couldn't go in, couldn't go in..."

"Why can't we go in?" my mom asked him darkly, hearing Wang Erdan's nonsensical statement.

Wang Erdan smiled mysteriously. "There's a Demon Cave here, and it eats both adults and children."

At the entrance of this ancient village, there was always a village guardian. Naturally dull-witted, he wandered the village daily.

He survived on handouts from villagers and was disliked by everyone, from east to west.

Most people considered the so-called "village guardian" merely a euphemism for the village's lazy good-for-nothings.

I'm ashamed to admit, I used to think the same way.

Unexpectedly, Wang Erdan directly mentioned my pregnancy. But my pregnancy was still in its very early stages, not showing at all!

This guy... might possess some actual ability...

Wang Erdan's warning that we couldn't enter Ancient Well Village because of the Demon Cave – what did that signify?

Just then, my Uncle Su Chongshun arrived on his motorcycle.

Seeing Wang Erdan obstructing us, he fiercely scolded him, "Get lost! If you keep blocking the way, I'll set the dogs on you; they'll annihilate your entire family."

I hadn't seen my uncle in many years, and I never expected him to have become so irritable.

Intimidated, Wang Erdan cried and shuffled to the side of the road, wiping his tears.

My uncle approached my mom and me, his tone much softer. "Su Wan, sister-in-law! It's my fault for being late and letting this fool bully you."

"Wanwan has a high fever," my mom pleaded, looking at my uncle.

My uncle placed a helmet on my head. His gaze drifted to my lower abdomen, a hint of gloom clouding his eyes. "Being entangled by a snake does this to you. Get on; I'll take you back first."

My uncle mounted the bike first, and I struggled to climb onto the rear seat of the motorcycle.

However, I noticed Wang Erdan, peeking through his fingers covering his face. He was actually sneering. His earlier tears had been a facade. "Poor pretty girl, won't listen, wants to enter the village. One corpse, two lives... so pitiful."

As I just managed to get on the motorcycle, my heart suddenly skipped a beat.

Before I could even react,

the world began to spin, and then I lost consciousness due to the fever.

When my senses returned, I found myself lying in a quaint, ancient hall.

A worn-out mat lay beneath me on the floor.

The thin mat offered little protection from the chilling earth energy that seeped upwards, making me feel cold to the bone.

The air was heavy with the stifling scent of burning incense.

Four Taoist nuns stood opposite me, their expressions frigid. The eldest among them, an Old Taoist Nun, let out a cold smirk. "The girl carrying the snake embryo has awakened."
