Yan Lv reflects on his marriage to Mu Sha, questioning their past and current relationship. Mu Sha returns from the lab, exhausted, and sleeps soundly. Yan Lv observes her sleeping and makes the decision to sleep in the guest room to avoid disturbing her. The next morning, Mu Sha wakes up alone and realizes she might be pregnant, which deeply troubles her due to her dangerous work researching AIDS. She resolves to keep this a secret from Yan Lv, fearing he would stop her research.

"It appears she's consistently matching the clock's chime," Yan Lv remarked as he slowly rose, proceeding directly to the kitchen upon opening the door.

Mu Sha applied a light layer of makeup, a process completed in not much more than ten minutes. Catching sight of her flat abdomen in the mirror, her imagination took flight. She could almost envision the maternal sensation, a peculiar illusion of a nascent life beginning to stir within her.

"It hasn't even been a month; it's likely too minuscule to discern. To be lost in such daydreams in broad daylight, I must be feeling quite lightheaded."

Dismissing these fanciful notions, Mu Sha shook her head. She then earnestly turned her thoughts to her research, reaffirming her commitment to the intricate work on the virus, which ultimately settled her hurried emotions.

Yan Lv maintained a steady gaze, sipping mineral water while subtly observing his surroundings. The abrupt sound of a door opening was met with feigned nonchalance; he continued to drink, his peripheral vision keenly tracking the activity beyond his immediate view.

Unexpectedly finding Yan Lv already awake, Mu Sha experienced a moment of surprise and stillness upon entering the kitchen. "So he returned last night after all. I had assumed..."

A sudden wave of reassurance washed over her, and Mu Sha offered Yan Lv a smile. "You're up quite early today."

"Indeed, I have a company meeting scheduled later."

Mu Sha acknowledged with a nod, retrieved mineral water from the refrigerator, filled the kettle, and commenced waiting for the water to reach its boiling point.

Yan Lv felt compelled to utter a few words before the water boiled, lest she depart once it was ready. He pondered for a moment and then inquired.

"Is the laboratory still demanding your attention?"

Yan Lv's query caused Mu Sha to pause momentarily. "He typically shows little interest in my work, nor any particular fondness for the lab. Why the sudden shift?" she mused.

"Yes, it's been quite demanding recently, with constant research efforts."

"Is that so?"

Yan Lv casually added, "You mentioned last time that you were developing a countermeasure for AIDS. How is that progressing?"

"It's challenging to encapsulate in a few words. However, we are currently at a crucial juncture in our investigations. Should we succeed, it would significantly benefit AIDS patients, and we are fully committed."

A slight furrow creased Yan Lv's brow.

He found himself disliking Mu Sha's readiness to voice her opinions at any given moment. Yet, when her work was the subject, she transformed, becoming remarkably focused, almost animated. Though he couldn't fathom the excitement derived from laboratory endeavors, he detected a novel sentiment stirring within him. In that instant, Mu Sha seemed to emanate a distinct allure.

Her hair cascaded over her shoulders, loosely gathered into a simple braid. Her ears, faintly flushed, were likely a consequence of resting against her pillow. Bathed in the gentle light, her eyelashes fluttered as she lowered her head to blink, her gaze fixed on the kettle, projecting an image that readily evoked college students. Perhaps it was the lingering trace of an academic aura about her that enveloped him in this peculiar sensation.

"Do you have any availability to go out this weekend?"

The abrupt question startled Mu Sha, causing her to lift her eyes and meet Yan Lv's sincere and earnest expression. Her mood shifted inexplicably, leading to a brief hesitation. "I'll need to consult my work schedule before I can give you an answer."

"No concerns, I shall await your confirmation."

Mu Sha nodded, and precisely at that moment, the water began to boil. She retrieved instant soup and a small bowl from the drawer, poured herself a cup of water, and began preparing the soup.

Observing her efficient movements, Yan Lv mused that perhaps her previous independent life mirrored this very scene. She had managed all aspects of her existence autonomously, excelling without external assistance, handling every responsibility with remarkable capability.

"I'm heading to work now."

Yan Lv responded with a nod, "The morning rush is imminent; please be cautious on your way."
