Mushoku Tensei: Reincarnated as a Beast Race Chapter 395: 394 - The Human God Trembles

POV: Geese Nukadia
Oh.
I'm here again.
Staring at the seemingly infinite white void around me, a certain nostalgia washed over me.
It was a strange feeling, almost pleasant. While I was here, I could access many old memories, like a lousy tavern in some random town, a table full of bets, a campfire in the middle of nowhere, or an impossible mission that, by some miracle, worked out in the end.
Almost pleasant enough to distract me.
Almost.
"USELESS! USELESS! ARE ALL OF YOU THIS INCOMPETENT?!"
The feeling of nostalgia left me pretty quickly.
The white figure in front of me kept losing his mind, cursing in desperation, pacing back and forth like someone trapped in a cage.
Well.
I really did not want to be in his place right now.
For someone like Hitogami, so attached to his own life, the situation must have been worse than death. He was practically doomed to spend the rest of his days in agony, waiting for an inevitable executioner to come for his head.
"YOU ONLY HAD ONE JOB! ONE! HOW DID ALL OF YOU INCOMPETENTS LOSE TO A FEW RANDOM PESTS?!"
I could swear I had never seen Hitogami this furious, or this desperate.
But, thinking about it, it was to be expected.
All the tension, all the preparation, and all the expectation of the last few years had been destroyed in a matter of days. All the pieces, the monsters he had convinced, deceived, or shoved onto the board.
Everything collapsing at once.
Even if things had not gone perfectly, I still believed he should have followed more of his apostles' suggestions.
Especially mine.
I had very good ideas, ideas that were ignored most of the time, of course.
But now there was no point thinking about that anymore.
Even with him shouting, I did not care much.
I was dead, after all.
Actually, I had not even expected to see Hitogami after dying, so it was kind of nice.
I watched the figure with the mosaic-like face with some amusement. His hysteria and madness were obvious even though I could not really see his expression.
Hitogami had waited and plotted patiently over the past few years, fearing the loss of his greatest cards one by one.
Actually, the plan was very good.
With Milis, Badigadi, and the Technique God gathered together, probably even Rygar would not be able to win. Victory had been closer than ever.
All we needed to do was gather enough deaths in the Ever-White Labyrinth to revive Milis and then put them all on the same battlefield.
Simple and direct.
But things usually do not go as planned when your enemy has a powerful Destiny.
"Enough! That's enough, man!"
Hitogami stopped, and then turned to me.
I continued, shrugging.
"Hey, you really never learn. I did a lot of things to help you over the years, and now that I'm dying, this is what you do? Man, this is why you lost."
The void went silent.
For an instant, I even thought he might be feeling pity, but then I realized how ridiculous that thought was.
"Maybe it was inevitable from the start, you know..."
Hitogami remained silent.
The surroundings gradually began to take on a darker, more ominous shade.
I swear, if I had not already been dead, I probably would have been pissing myself right now.
Hitogami's voice sounded lower than usual.
"There is still one last chance."
He raised his head, clinging to the possibility that had not completely slipped away yet.
"Although that stupid brute and the slime lost easily, and you caused me more problems than you solved, that idiot with the shining sword may still be able to kill that anomaly."
I smiled, mocking him.
"Man, just accept your fate. Can't you see your plans are falling apart one by one?"
Hitogami did not answer.
So I continued:
"Well, you are a cockroach. You hide very well, you are disgusting beyond belief, and you are very hard to kill. Who knows? Maybe if you beg for mercy..."
I could not finish without laughing.
"Hahahahah!"
I laughed heartily as I mocked him.
I remembered very well when he did something similar to me after exterminating my entire tribe.
Back then, I could do nothing against him.
I could not even properly understand the scale of the cruel joke he was playing on me.
So, yes.
It was refreshing to pay him back, knowing that now he could do nothing to me.
As I laughed, the white void was swallowed more and more by a sinister darkness, like an omen of death.
Hitogami simply stared at me.
With what I assumed was an expression of hatred.
But how would I know, right?
I felt my consciousness fading away.
At the same time, everything grew darker.
The laughter slowly died.
My thoughts became light.
Strangely, I felt no regret.
It was a good life.
---
Milis felt extremely lucky at that moment, fate was truly on his side this time.
Or perhaps it was the Human God's arrangements.
Milis had no idea, but even so, he was grateful.
While fighting Rygar, he realized how quickly he would have been decapitated if he had not faced Aisha Greyrat and Jino Britz beforehand.
The first had shown him the strange advances magic had undergone during the thousands of years he had remained dormant.
Gravity magic, spatial magic, barriers of unknown structure, mixed elemental spells, and complex techniques that did not follow the simple logic of his era.
When he faced it at first, he felt annoyed, as if an irritating bee were buzzing around him.
But each sting hurt like hell.
The same happened with Jino Britz.
The Martial God displayed techniques and martial prowess unlike anything Milis had ever seen. Feints that were not merely feints, concealment that erased even intent, strikes that hid behind the opponent's perception, and an absurd ability to grow in the midst of battle.
But fighting those two humans allowed Milis to learn.
And adapt.
"Ignite, Ascalon!"
The sacred sword exploded in golden and white flames as it collided once again with the Beast God.
The light of Ascalon clashed against the flaming darkness of Doomsday.
The impact opened a flash across the sky.
Milis could not even imagine what it would be like to fight Rygar without knowing those ridiculous techniques. He would probably be killed and obliterated in fewer than ten moves.
For that reason, he felt luckier than ever, and a smile did not leave his face. At the same time, he could not help but admire the spells with such mystical effects.
Using Gravity and Space Magic to bend space.
Manipulating that dark matter capable of devouring everything.
Combining sound waves, Wind Magic, and magical disturbance to generate a Howling Magic capable of interfering with the flow of mana and the opponent's inner thoughts.
Even simple Fire Magic, which should have been the most common of all, became an unstoppable weapon of destruction in the hands of the Beast of the Apocalypse.
Flames with temperatures equivalent to supernovas.
Milis was almost certain that, even fighting in the sky, the entire world would suffer severe repercussions to its ecosystem.
But this power and strength.
This overwhelming destructive capacity... all of it only made him even more excited.
"HAHAHA! It is you! Yes! Only a creature like you deserves the title of Apocalyptic Beast!"
Both of them were rays of light crossing the sky.
Milis struck, dodged, and deflected with Ascalon, while golden and white flames covered his body and spread through the air. Amid the darkness and destruction brought by Rygar, Saint Milis looked like the last bastion of light.
Rygar, on the other hand, had a dense layer of blue lightning around his body, but that lightning did not behave like ordinary thunderbolts.
It had a strangely liquid form, similar to plasma, flowing around the Black Armor.
Not that anyone could see his silhouette clearly.
As he tore through space and moved across the sky, Rygar looked more like a natural phenomenon than a warrior.
The two collided without stopping.
One manipulated magic of every kind, forcing the battlefield to bend to his rhythm.
The other resisted with regenerative ability, golden flames, Divine Magic, and Ascalon.
Two rays of light crossed the sky hundreds, thousands of times in a matter of seconds.
The sky trembled, the earth shook.
Anyone in the Six-Faced World, no matter how far away they were, could see the phenomenon.
From the top of the Heavenly Continent to the farthest edge of the Begaritt Continent.
Thousands of golden and blue trails crossed the sky like falling stars, moving so fast that even the natural refraction of light seemed confused.
Those who knew who was fighting anxiously awaited the result.
Because, at that moment, the entire sky seemed to have become the battlefield of two gods.
---
Meanwhile, in Chaos Breaker Fortress, Eris Adoldia, current Sword God and Red Lioness of the Kingdom of Gaia, was...
Sleeping.
Although, clearly, the place where she was sleeping was anything but appropriate.
She was lying, not very comfortably, on the old throne of the Armored Dragon King, Perugius Dola.
That same Perugius Dola was lodged in a crater on the left wall of the throne room, where paintings and decorations of gold and silver had once been.
His body remained motionless.
In addition to the many cuts scattered across his body, there was a bloody hole in the center of his chest, with blood still slowly flowing out.
The Armored Dragon King.
Hero of humanity.
One of the renowned Three Godslayers responsible for the death of the Demon God Laplace had met his end inside his own territory.
Not even the powers of the magical fortress had been able to save him.
But Eris, sleeping peacefully on the throne, was not worried about any of that.
Her bodyguards, the crab-man Ku and the Pistol Shrimp, watched her helplessly. Neither of them knew exactly what to do.
Wake her up?
Call for help?
Put her over their shoulders and simply leave?
The vigorous Sword God, publicly recognized for her inexhaustible ferocity, had simply collapsed from exhaustion as soon as the battle was resolved.
Technically, Ku and the Pistol Shrimp were not exactly that reliable either.
But Eris could not have cared less about that.
She slept in the first place that was at least minimally comfortable, leaving the two warriors of the Sea Race unsure how to react.
At that moment, a strong gust of wind swept through the fortress.
In the next instant, a slender elf landed in the destroyed hall, cautiously observing her surroundings.
Verdia.
Her gaze swept across the wreckage of the battle. She could not see any of the enemy spirits, not even with her Spiritual Eye, which reassured her somewhat.
But a brief shock passed through her eyes when she saw Perugius Dola pinned to the wall like a sinister work of art.
Her gaze quickly passed over Ku and the Pistol Shrimp.
Then it reached Eris, sleeping on the throne.
Ku wasted no time explaining, wanting to avoid any misunderstanding.
"Lady Verdia, Lady Eris simply collapsed after the battle, we—"
"Forget it."
Verdia raised a hand to interrupt him as she approached Eris.
Her gaze softened for an instant when she saw her sleeping.
Then it became serious again.
"Gaia, take Eris out of here."
When she spoke, one of her spirits emerged from the floor.
Without a word, Gaia carefully picked the sleeping Eris up in her arms and began moving her away from the throne.
Eris muttered something incomprehensible, but did not wake up.
Verdia then turned to the two warriors of the Sea Race, her gaze inquisitive.
"I already know about Eris's condition. You do not need to worry. Good work protecting her."
She paused briefly, and her eyes returned to Perugius.
"But I am truly wondering. How and why did the three of you kill Perugius Dola?"
Her tone was serious, but also somewhat curious. Verdia suspected Ku had been responsible for the final blow, since he was the only one with a piercing weapon in that fight.
But the matter was more complicated than that.
Perugius was special, in his body, there was a Sacred Treasure. One of the five needed to reach Hitogami in the Void World.
His death was not something that could be treated lightly.
The Pistol Shrimp spoke for the first time.
"We were not the ones who killed the Armored Dragon. The one who killed him was the Dragon God Orsted."
Before the shock could fully reach her expression, he added:
"And he also left a message for the Beast God."
