Late at night on the second day after the operation, Henry once again donned the Duck-type Duck-Leopard Armor and escorted Alexei Shostakov, wearing the Ursa Major Armor, back to Europe.
It was daytime in Europe, so the two naturally couldn’t land directly in a city. The optical camouflage function was currently only available on the Sparrow spy drones. Because the armor’s surface was irregular, they had yet to overcome the flaws that prevented optical camouflage from working properly on it.
The reason Henry had come along was that he needed to retrieve the Ursa Major Armor. After folding it up and reducing its volume somewhat, he placed it on the back of Green Arrow Duck and secured it firmly in place.
Henry asked, "You really don’t want to leave the armor behind? I should have told you that, basically, within a city, combined with Little Duck’s recall function, you can put it on at any location.
"You just need to leave the armor at a fixed location. Unless you’re fleeing to another city, there’s no need to carry it around. This is already the most convenient method that current technology can provide."
Alexei shook his head.
"No. It’s not a problem with carrying or putting it on."
"Then what is it? Do you have any suggestions for improving it?"
Henry took two bottles of chilled beer from the storage compartment in Duck’s rear and handed one over.
Alexei accepted it without hesitation and took a large gulp after opening it.
"Remember when I followed those people alone to rescue the captives in the sewers?"
"Something happened?"
Alexei’s expression became complicated.
"Those bastards tried to ambush me and steal the armor. But aside from pissing me off, they couldn’t even scratch the paint.
"When those people climbed all over me and surrounded me, trying to restrain me, I fought back. Since the weapons were all meant for fighting Reapers, I didn’t use any of them. I only wanted to push those people away and pull them off me.
"That was the first time I realized how fragile the human body was. I pulled lightly, and I tore someone apart. I swung my hand intending to shove someone away, and instead I ripped him in half. Those people didn’t even have a chance to run before they were torn into pieces.
"Only after seeing that did I understand what you told me before. The armor is very powerful, but there aren’t many enemies that actually require using it against them. So I figured that if I really need the armor, calling for support should still be fast enough."
"No wonder there were so many bloodstains when the armor was being cleaned."
Henry looked at the bear-like man in surprise. He hadn’t expected him to have such a compassionate side.
"Did you develop PTSD? Feel like you killed too many people or were too brutal?"
"Suka! I’m a super-soldier. How could I be afraid of killing people? But I’m not some bloodthirsty beast. I just don’t think it was necessary."
Alexei spoke stubbornly.
Henry patted the Ursa Major Armor secured to Duck’s back.
"Fine. I respect your decision. Just contact me if you need it.
"Besides, after getting this combat data, I have some ideas for upgrades. But are you sure you only want me to take you to Debrecen? The Red Room lead isn’t in Budapest?"
Although it was also a major Hungarian city, Debrecen was in the east, near the border where Romania and Sokovia met. It was more than two hundred kilometers from Budapest.
Alexei shot the alien a sidelong glance.
"Thanks to you, can I go straight back to Budapest now? I’m afraid the moment I enter the city, I’ll be hunted by vampires again. If that’s the case, I really might as well leave the armor with me."
Henry raised both hands in surrender.
"My bad."
He gave a sharp whistle. The auxiliary drone Little Duck and the spy drones Melina, Natasha, and Yelena floated up from their mounting points on the Ursa Major Armor. The little guys had all received fresh batteries and were fully charged.
Alexei then took a backpack from the storage box. Just before leaving, he suddenly asked:
"Henry, who’s your hypothetical enemy?"
"My hypothetical enemy?"
Henry froze, unable to answer for quite some time.
After waiting a little while, Alexei decided not to wait any longer. He turned around and walked away, waving a hand as he said:
"Hope it isn’t the whole world."
...The whole world?
The threat posed by the new breed of vampires, the Reapers, was quickly brought under control on both the East and West Coasts.
On the East Coast, under the leadership of the New York Continental Hotel, the dark monsters of the underground world were completely wiped out. The sewer residents who had been rescued also became the main force in clearing out the Reapers. All they needed was a supply of ultraviolet weapons.
Besides, Reapers couldn’t even be compared to ordinary vampires. Nobody wanted to become one of those mindless monsters. Even the humans who considered themselves vampire sympathizers couldn’t accept it.
On the West Coast, the person who resolved the incident was the legendary Daywalker, Blade.
He also uncovered the source of the Reaper plague.
The vampire elder Eli Damaskinos had artificially modified vampire genes in an attempt to turn vampires into immortal beings without weaknesses.
Although the Reaper virus still had flaws, the elder did not prioritize fixing those defects. Instead, he wanted to use Blade to solve the vampires’ vulnerability to sunlight first.
In the end, the vampire elder and his eldest son—the first Reaper—were both hacked to pieces by Blade, bringing their lives of evil to an end.
The remaining Reapers were also completely exterminated through the efforts of the vampire hunters on the West Coast.
But...
"Who did Vampire Elder Eli Damaskinos cooperate with to research the new virus? And where else is information about the new virus stored?"
Black Suit asked Whistler these two deadly questions over the phone after the latter called to report the good news.
The old vampire hunter’s good mood instantly sank to rock bottom.
After holding it in for a long while, Whistler finally cursed.
"Motherfucker! These goddamn monsters that lurk in the shadows are just like cockroaches. The dinosaurs all died out, and they’re still alive. You think something like this won’t happen again?"
"There could easily be some arms dealer who thinks they can control these monsters and wants to turn them into biological weapons. Honestly, ever since the two atomic bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, humanity has been racing down the road toward its own extinction. Would you really bet that nobody like that exists?"
"All right. I’ll follow this lead and investigate further. That vampire elder’s daughter, Nyssa, is a little stupid, but she’s not a bad person. I’ll try to get her cooperation and eliminate this threat."
"Fine. Contact me if you need help."
"I know."
After hanging up, the vampire incident finally came to an end.
Henry was able to return to his previously peaceful life. Of course, that didn’t mean there were no developments related to the incident around him.
The building Henry had purchased in Manhattan, New York, finally welcomed its first new tenant after the terrorist attack.
Cassandra Igobell moved into the eighth floor, becoming Tina’s upstairs neighbor.
