The mutant war came to an end when Wolverine successfully destroyed the massive mutant-conversion device.
Magneto had served as the final line of defense, and his powers were a perfect counter to Wolverine.
The fact that Logan managed to seize an opening and succeed in a single decisive strike could only be attributed to the X-Men's extraordinary combat instincts.
The core members of the X-Men had been fighting together since the Battle of Egypt in 1983.
Seventeen years of conflicts large and small had forged their battlefield intuition into something terrifying.
Wolverine, meanwhile, might have lost his memories, but he was a man who had survived the American Civil War, World War I, and World War II.
He had been tempered in battlefields that resembled giant meat grinders.
Many times, he didn't rely on conscious judgment at all.
His body simply reacted through instinct and muscle memory.
By comparison, among the Brotherhood of Mutants, the only genuinely skilled combatants besides Magneto were a handful of individuals such as Sabretooth, Toad, and Mystique.
And even they lacked coordinated teamwork.
Most of the other mutants could bully unarmed civilians with their powers.
Against people carrying firearms, however, there was already some risk.
Against a battle-hardened team like the X-Men?
The difference was enormous.
Despite fielding nearly a hundred fighters against seven opponents, they were still beaten into a complete rout.
It was honestly impressive that Magneto remained loyal to such a ragtag organization.
No wonder the truly ambitious mutant villains—the ones who sought power rather than ideals—preferred creating elite groups like the Hellfire Club instead of trying to absorb the Brotherhood.
---
Once the conversion device was destroyed and Magneto was defeated, he still managed to use the last of his strength to send a retreat signal to his fellow Brotherhood members.
He himself was under too much scrutiny to have any hope of escaping.
The moment the signal went out, the mutants scattered in every direction.
Not that their lack of discipline could really be blamed.
With every mutant possessing different powers, breaking into small groups and fleeing independently was the most practical strategy available.
At this stage, the X-Men weren't even interested in pursuing the ordinary Brotherhood members.
Their attention was focused entirely on the dangerous individuals.
Several X-Men remained gathered around Magneto, both to prevent him from causing further trouble and to make sure the military didn't decide to quietly eliminate him.
Wolverine was occupied with helping the young girl who had been strapped into the machine.
The other X-Men largely appeared busy with various tasks.
In reality, none of them seemed particularly eager to hunt down the fleeing Brotherhood members.
Only a limited number of military personnel attempted pursuit in the darkness.
Even they were busy rescuing comrades from the overturned boats rather than committing all available resources to capture operations.
In short, the sudden mutant civil war had finally come to an end.
---
Henry stole a glance at Selene.
Her expression hadn't changed.
There was no anger.
No disappointment.
She simply continued chatting naturally with Katharine Hepburn.
Aren't you worried?
The question echoed through his thoughts for a while before a response arrived.
Why would I be worried?
Because you lost?
Even if they all died, I wouldn't care.
Aren't you and Magneto supposed to be on the same side?
I just think Magneto's ideas are interesting, so I help him.
Whether he succeeds or fails isn't particularly important to me.
Well...
That attitude was familiar.
The same thing could often be seen among the Eternals.
When someone lived long enough, they inevitably saw enough victories and failures that temporary struggles ceased to matter.
Unless an issue conflicted with their core values or threatened their fundamental interests, it was incredibly difficult to provoke a truly emotional reaction from immortals.
Once Henry understood that, he stopped asking questions.
Everyone had come to watch a performance.
The show was over.
Naturally, the audience dispersed.
It wasn't as though he could jump onto the stage afterward and continue the story himself simply because he wanted more.
---
Henry assumed the matter was finished.
Judging from Magneto's circumstances, the old mutant would almost certainly be locked away in some specialized prison.
The Brotherhood should remain quiet for a while as well.
But the doorbell ringing the next morning proved that the aftershocks were still spreading.
And somehow they had reached an alien hiding behind a mutant disguise.
---
When Henry went to answer the door, he assumed it was Selene arriving for the final day of her seven-day temporary caregiver assignment.
He was already thinking of a few sarcastic comments.
Instead, he opened the door to find a group of uniformed police officers.
Leading them was Police Commissioner George Stacy.
Henry froze briefly.
One of the officers immediately produced an arrest warrant and prepared to speak.
George Stacy stopped him.
"Henry."
"Someone has reported that you participated in the Brotherhood of Mutants' terrorist attack last night and escaped from the scene."
"My instincts tell me this probably has nothing to do with you."
"But procedure is procedure."
"I hope you'll cooperate and come down to the station to provide a statement."
This wasn't the first time George Stacy had dealt with the young man.
He knew perfectly well how much trouble tended to follow Henry around.
His immediate reaction to the accusation had been that someone was trying to frame him.
That was why he had insisted on leading the operation personally.
Although some officers had brought anti-mutant equipment, George had no intention of using it.
He preferred to handle things through conversation.
---
The commotion at the door soon attracted attention from inside the house.
Katharine Hepburn called out,
"Henry, is that Selene at the door? Or has Maria come back?"
The elderly actress walked into view.
After seeing the scene outside, she paused.
Then she frowned.
"George, why are all of you at my house this early in the morning?"
George Stacy had already experienced her sharp tongue on multiple occasions.
Offering a helpless smile, he explained,
"Katharine, someone accused Henry of participating in last night's terrorist incident on Liberty Island."
"I'm here to bring him in so we can clarify the situation."
"He spent last night sitting in my living room watching your embarrassment on television with me."
Her response was immediate.
"Or are you suggesting I've developed dementia and can no longer recognize whether there's a living person sitting beside me?"
"Of course not, Katharine."
George was already beginning to lose ground.
Still, he persisted.
"This is simply procedure."
"You know Henry's identity."
"Last night's incident was a major event."
"If he has a solid alibi, then recording a formal witness statement now will prevent future disputes."
"Remaining silent isn't necessarily the best response."
---
Since he already understood what was happening, Henry decided to help.
"He's right, Kate."
"It's fine."
"I'll just go to the station, provide a statement, and come right back."
The elderly actress pouted like a stubborn child.
"But I'm hungry."
"Katie is hungry too."
"You wouldn't want to come home and find Katie chewing on my old bones to satisfy her appetite, would you?"
Lying beside her feet while she scratched behind her ears, Katie let out a low roar.
Several officers who weren't mentally prepared for the presence of a tiger visibly stiffened.
At that moment, movement sounded from the staircase.
Appearing at the rear of the group of officers was Selene, still dressed in her middle-aged-woman disguise.
Smiling, she asked,
"Am I interrupting something?"
A voice entered Henry's mind.
Want me to make them leave?
Without drawing attention to himself, Henry shook his head slightly.
This isn't the officers' decision. It's coming from the judicial system.
Send this group away and another one will just come.
At the same time, he spoke aloud.
"Selene, you're here."
"Perfect timing."
"I need to go with the police for a while."
"Could you take care of Kate for me?"
As he spoke, he removed his apron and placed it on the cabinet near the entrance.
From behind him, Katharine Hepburn finally relented.
"Fine, child."
"I'll have my lawyer come down."
"Until they arrive, keep your mouth under control."
"Don't go spouting nonsense the way you usually do."
"Got it."
Henry smiled.
