Luis and Lily enjoyed a late-night snack with friends, while Yana discussed her financial stability. Later, upon returning home, they discovered Old Peter's apartment was the source of a loud, vibrating noise. Surveillance footage revealed a heated argument between Old Peter and his son, Pete, over finances and property management fees. Pete was particularly upset about his father's actions jeopardizing his upcoming marriage and job, while Old Peter remained unreasonable. Ultimately, Luis had the property management cut off the power to Old Peter's apartment.

That building-shaking device instantly became a useless piece of junk.

The family slept comfortably through the night. The next morning, Minda called.

On Monday, Luis's wife Lily went to work as usual. She still preferred riding her little electric scooter, as it was more convenient. That Benz C-Class she just couldn't get used to driving.

Luis and his mother-in-law went downstairs to take a look. Holy shit, the front windshield of the Mercedes-Benz C had been smashed, and the side mirrors had been ripped off as well.

"We don't even need to check the cameras. Anyone with half a brain knows that stubborn bastard did it."

At this point, Luis's mother-in-law was furious. Her heart had just softened the night before, and now her face was twisted with hatred again.

The property management checked the surveillance footage, and sure enough, it was Old Peter. The drunk old fool, stumbling around like he was wasted, had somehow found a construction sledgehammer and started smashing at the fence.

But that fence was solid red brick and cement, even a drill bit would have trouble getting through. How did an old man like that have the strength to swing such a heavy hammer? After chipping off just a tiny corner, Old Peter was panting so hard it seemed like he might drop dead from exhaustion. But the stubborn bastard wouldn't quit. In a fit of rage, he swung the hammer around and started smashing up the cars parked nearby.

They were all his neighbors' cars anyway. He really got a kick out of smashing them.

Minda, clever and tactful as always, immediately tried to comfort Ruth. "Sister Ruth, don't be angry. The property management has already called the police."

"When the police officers arrive, you two don't need to get involved. The property management will handle the communication."

"We've also notified the car dealership. You don't need to worry about the damage assessment either. Besides the repair costs, we can also pursue additional compensation."

Minda smiled slyly and said, "This time it's a criminal case with civil liabilities. Fortunately, we've already hired a lawyer. We'll take care of him in one go."

Ruth's heart was overjoyed. She said, "Thank you for your hard work, sister. How thoughtful of you."

"We're family here. How could I just sit back and watch you get taken advantage of?"

As Minda spoke, her pretty eyes sparkled with springtime charm as she looked at Luis.

There was no need for Luis to worry about this matter anymore. He accompanied his mother-in-law to the teahouse and comforted her properly.

The card games hadn't started yet, but quite a few of her card partners had arrived early and gathered at the front desk to gossip about the events of the past couple of days.

Old Peter was indeed hated by both gods and men, but many people actually felt sorry for his son. To be stuck with such a father was really a miserable fate.

"Old Peter is truly out of line. His son isn't a bad person, but having a father like that is just too tragic."

"Exactly. Back when his son was in school, he could have gone to regular high school, but Old Peter said they couldn't afford college anyway, so he made him go to some crappy vocational school."

"That's right. Back then, he used to brag all the time about how good his son's grades were."

"And when he joined the military, it was the same thing. Some officers wanted to keep him in the service, but that old bastard insisted there was no future in it and called his son back to run a street stall with him. He said that was how you earned real money."

"Ah, now he's working as a driver, and his boss really appreciates him. But Old Peter looks down on it and says it's just a job waiting on people."

"What you've said isn't even the worst part. When his son first came back, someone introduced him to a girl. She took a liking to Old Peter's son right away."

"That makes sense. The young man was hardworking, had plenty of energy, and was pretty handsome too."

"You don't know the whole story. That girl got pregnant, and her parents were willing to agree to the marriage because she was their only child."

"They were willing to buy a wedding house, buy them a car, and ask for no bride price. They even asked the young man to work at their family's factory, with the chance to take over the business later."

"Holy shit, that's like ancestors scattering gold dust."

"But Old Peter said, 'What's the difference between that and being a live-in son-in-law?' He said it would make him lose face."

"Fuck, does the Peter family own a throne or something?"

"Seriously. What's even more unbelievable is that the girl's parents offered to have two or even more children, with one of them taking the woman's family name, irrespective of gender."

"Old Peter totally lost it. He grabbed some pesticide and made his son kneel, forcing him to swear he wouldn't accept those conditions."

"Now that you mention it, I recall that incident. It didn't happen inside; he stopped his son right at the community entrance and compelled him to take a public vow."

"I remember that too! Old Peter used to boast about it, claiming the girl's family was overstepping, attempting to snatch the son he had raised with such immense effort."

"His version of the story is utter nonsense. The girl's parents suggested the young couple could live independently to prevent generational conflicts and endless quarrels."

"In Old Peter's view, if you aren't present and obedient to him, you're disloyal. Being his son sounds like a truly dreadful existence."

"Ultimately, the girl had an abortion, and the wedding was called off. Old Peter was so proud, boasting about it everywhere. If I were his son, I would have ended him by now."

After all the idle chatter, Luis found himself feeling a sliver of sympathy for the fellow. Strangely, despite all these occurrences, his son's reputation hadn't suffered significantly.

Around midday, everyone dispersed to have lunch or ordered takeout, their hands rubbing together with anticipation for the afternoon's matches.

Then, Ruth piped up, "Son-in-law, I've heard whispers about those matters. Honestly, this entire predicament is truly Old Peter's fault."

"Mom, don't fret. I have things under control."

Just as Luis offered his reassurance, an unfamiliar figure made an entrance.

It was Old Peter's son, Pete. His countenance was weary, and with a trace of awkwardness, he cast his gaze towards Ruth, then towards Luis.

At last, he spoke, "Auntie, regarding that building demolition project, I disassembled it and disposed of it."

"I wish to speak with both of you, if that would be acceptable…"

"Please, sit. Have some tea."

Luis found himself unable to adopt a stern demeanor with the man. This poor, unfortunate soul, even if his misguided sense of filial duty and emotional manipulation were of his own making, based on all the gossip, this fellow had endured more hardship than any person ought to.

The only aspect of life one cannot select is one's relatives, and among those, the sole element truly beyond choice is one's parents.

If your parents from your birth family are as detrimental as that, the initial half of your life will be more wretched than that of a dog or a pig.

And to have but one such father is more than sufficient. In the span of just a few days, this individual had undergone a complete transformation.

Previously, he had emanated vitality and zeal, much like a shining, proud groom, brimming with optimism for the future and bursting with ambition.

But now, he appeared neither fully human nor fully spectral, a figure of profound pity.

"Concerning that wall, I inquired with the property management, and your total expenditure on labor was five thousand dollars, correct?"

Pete stated with deep sincerity, "Throughout the years, I've gained some insight into the discord between my father and you all. I truly erred this time, and I refrain from offering pretexts like being deceived, because ultimately, that is my father."

"I will offer eight thousand dollars for the wall's removal, would that be agreeable? I still need to retain my employment."

After a brief pause, he added swiftly, "Three thousand of that sum serves as my personal apology to you. Should you concur, we shall finalize an accord with the property management, and I will procure my own crew for the demolition, with all expenses borne by myself."

"I will also handle the waste removal charges."

Every single statement was logical. Honestly, in contrast to his father, he presented as a complete inversion, leading one to question the legitimacy of their shared lineage.

If one were inclined towards suspicion, Old Peter might have been questioned regarding past infidelities decades ago…

Otherwise, how could such an unreasonable, slippery character beget a son who was universally commended and so commendably understanding and rational?

Not to mention, all his romantic partners were eager to marry him…

Even seasoned parents held this young man in high regard, and military leaders were willing to guide this unconnected individual.
