Light Fortress Chapter 2002 - 54: The Mists of History (Part 2)

~6 minute read · 1,508 words
Previously on Light Fortress...
Gu Shen ventures into the Old World, while the Heavenly Eye protects Zhou Jiren and Zhong Wei, who are in a dream state. The Rust Bone General and Luo Er remain at Moon City Fortress, anticipating an attack from the Origin Will. They discuss the Origin Will's limitations, noting it cannot interfere with the Empress or alter the Divine Throne's events, suggesting the Empress's loft is a safe haven.

This intelligence made Luo Er feel more at ease; without the Divine Throne level of combat power to strike, the strength of the Rust Bone General is the pinnacle here!

"For some extremely resolute ’Transcendents,’ the Origin Will should also be unable to interfere..."

Luo Er murmured: "The reason it can create such a perfect world relies on the memory provided by each of us ’outsiders.’ This world is seamless, with every character full of flesh and blood; the Origin Will can manipulate the Source Material Storm for strikes but cannot command super strong individuals to work for it, so it can only employ forces with existing conflicts to ’impact’ us."

Rust Bone frowned.

"North Continent... currently has no enemies. If there were any, it would be the Central Continent."

But according to the previous inference, the Origin Will cannot change the event line involving the Divine Throne.

Without Qinglong’s order, the Central Continent would not start a war with the North Continent, much less initiate an assault on Moon City!

"Logically, we should be very secure now. But why do I feel a bit restless?"

Rust Bone silently came to the porthole.

In the distance of Moon City Fortress, suddenly a pile of frost and snow rose, and at the end of the Snow Plain Mountain valley, thick fog surged.

The elite division of the Fourth Legion that came to merge with Moon City also noticed the anomaly.

"Rust Bone sir, CN021 reports to you, unknown mist appears in the north of Moon City; the Reconnaissance Camp investigated without result, dispatched thirteen vanguards, all disappeared without trace—"

"Rust Bone sir, Fortress Guardian Guo Si reports to you, thick fog appears in the south of Moon City!"

Continuous reports streamed into the central control room.

Luo Er’s expression turned grim because she had already placed strands of hair around the valleys of Moon City; these strands counted as her "eyes," but just now, her "eyes" began to disappear, and at the instant of the hair’s shattering, she would feel it. Logically, if uprooted, she would sense it immediately.

But the "eyes" weren’t uprooted; they were "moved."

It’s like... they were placed into another space-time.

Rumble.

The ground began to tremble, the sound of vibration akin to drum beats; even Rust Bone sitting on the main boat could hear it clearly... In the distant valley, fog encompassed like a sea, and from atop the high walls of the Moon City Fortress, several Guardians temporarily deployed by the Fourth Legion rushed to overlook afar, only to see numerous shadows emerging in the fog at the valley’s end.

"This is..."

The rumble of heavy tanks’ tracks crushing ground was dispersed by steam.

In the mist, first crashing out was a slanted large red banner, engraved with the splendid coronet of the Lin Royal Family of the Northern Continent; in a moment, all the Guardians atop the high walls of Moon City were stunned, and the older "veterans" within the legion even stood frozen with bewildered expressions... No one recognized that banner more than they did, for prior to the Empress’ ascension, the "Red Emperor War" surged across the Northern Continent’s inland for over a decade, from south to north, causing great suffering to the Northern Continent people.

The banner high in the mist...

Is the Red Emperor’s banner!

Rust Bone’s expression turned stark, he stood with hands behind his back on the main boat, his eyes locked onto the figure within the mist.

"For six hundred years, Moon City indeed hasn’t faced a natural disaster and indeed stands as an iron city..."

"But a man-made disaster did occur here."

"Before the Skytop Battle, the Major General of the First Legion, Golden Ape, once shattered Moon City’s ’iron walls’."

He slightly trembled the fingers holding the bronze sword.

But not from fear.

But from excitement.

Back then he wasn’t on this front line; the one to confront Golden Ape wasn’t himself but Silver Fox... It was precisely because of the battle with Golden Ape that Silver Fox carried a lifelong scar on his cheek, that battle saw Silver Fox retreat, Golden Ape triumph, solidifying his reputation as ’Northern Continent’s mightiest.’

Now... the Origin Will in the Dream World altered the world line, leading Golden Ape to appear with old troops before the Moon City Fortress guarded by Rust Bone.

This battle doesn’t exist in history.

"No wonder I’ve been restless."

Rust Bone spoke hoarsely: "If the opponent is Golden Ape... then this battle will indeed be troublesome."

The Red Emperor War has long ended!

Thirty years of rapid technological advancement in the North Continent!

The airships in Moon City can easily bomb the steam tanks under Golden Ape’s command... but Rust Bone’s task isn’t to defend Moon City nor to defeat Golden Ape’s old troops!

The Origin Will let this army appear, surrounding Moon City, for only one purpose!

"He wants to kill Teacher Zhong Wei..."

Luo Er murmured softly: "Or me."

"Or me."

Rust Bone lowered his gaze with a smile, drew out the bronze sword, and said: "Because it cannot command the Divine Throne, it brings forth the strongest of North Continent from the past... once I fail to protect any one of you, the mission counts as failed."

The tip of the bronze sword rang aloud!

At the moment Rust Bone’s sword tip trembled, Golden Ape stationed at the forefront within the fog immediately sensed the anomaly... After breaking through this fog, he saw a scene never witnessed before in his lifetime; the iron walls of Moon City Fortress were higher than he remembered, and atop them floated many airships of models unfamiliar to him!

During the Red Emperor War, the "Source Energy Boat Technology" of the North Continent was not yet mature, and the airships used in combat appeared rudimentary.

And now even the Fourth Generation Source Armor has been developed!

Numerous Transcendents donned Source Armor, rising floating from Moon City’s battlements; their appearance gave Golden Ape an extremely strong sense of danger.

"Interesting."

A young and soft voice rang beside Golden Ape.

The speaker, with a longsword at his waist, a bamboo hat on his head, had a black veil falling down, enveloping him; under the whip of snowy wind, his scarlet embroidered war robes fluttered wildly.

The man asked softly: "The previous intelligence didn’t mention Moon City having so many Guardians, has Lin Lei prepared manpower long in advance, waiting for us in ambush at Moon City?"

The valley of Moon City Fortress shrouded in historical mist.

Back then, people thought Silver Fox’s retreat and loss of Moon City Fortress was due to facing Golden Ape in direct defeat...

But that wasn’t the complete "truth."

"Your Majesty."

Golden Ape stated softly: "The news of your personal crusade wasn’t publicized... there’s something peculiar about this place, we might withdraw."

"Withdraw?"

The man spoke expressionlessly, "Having reached this point, how can you and I withdraw; retreat further and we’d return to Central City! I’ve seen the Fourth Legion’s banner, those Transcendents are under Rust Bone’s command! The intelligence stated Silver Fox was guarding this place, apparently Lin Lei has already deduced my assault plan and temporarily replaced with the more adept warrior Rust Bone, intending to duel with me in advance through Moon City. No matter what... today’s battle must be won!"

"...Your Majesty!"

Golden Ape stayed silent for several seconds, drawing a deep breath, then gazed toward that gigantic airship, solemnly stating: "That big guy seems unlike any creation of this era. If we launch a storm assault, we’d likely pay a heavy price."

"True heroes are fearless of gunfire."

The Red Emperor removed his bamboo hat, tossing it to the ground, and coldly stated: "You and I will charge forward together, crash that main boat, slay Rust Bone... I issue my imperial decree, for today’s battle of Moon City, advance only, no retreat!"

He drew out the longsword, his scarlet embroidered robe scattered by the might of extraordinary aura—

With a resounding roar!

The Red Emperor’s sword tip ignited with flames, those flames mingled with the faint aura of ’Fire Seed,’ making it unbearable to gaze directly!

Historical records.

The Red Emperor died at the hands of Lin Lei, this young emperor who held the throne of the North Continent for two decades, was once envied as a lucky one by millions, sat upon the Throne for two decades, possessing the ’War Fire Seed’ for two decades, yet alas, with such excellent conditions, still lost in the ultimate showdown to the even younger Lin Lei.

This man performed many insane deeds in his lifetime, becoming the object of scorn for the Northern Continent people after his death.

But peeling back layers of fog...

Perhaps the only mistake he made in life was failing to successfully forge the Fire Seed.
