Gu Shen boarded the last monorail train, only to find it occupied by a mysterious, ethereal girl who questioned him about the existence of pi. She vanished as the train exited the tunnel, leaving Gu Shen to confront a daunting woman in black who held a bloodied knife and asked the same perplexing question.
“The containment field is breached! A-009 has escaped.” “Confirming breach, A-009 has successfully fled the facility.” With alarms echoing through the night, the citizens of Da Teng City were in for a night devoid of sleep. Wei Shu’s gaze was fixed upon the multitude of flickering screens within the emergency command center, his face grim. The emergency report trembled in his hand, its creases deepening with every emotion. Veins pulsed on his temple as his fists struck the console before him. “How could the breach have occurred? With such a strong guard presence, how did A-009 manage to escape?” “Da Teng City only took custody of A-009 three days ago, and now this has happened. The initial report cites a network anomaly with ‘Deep Sea’ as the cause for the breach… but how is that even possible?” Wei Shu pivoted to face the entrance. “Regardless of the cause, it has already escaped. Miss Nan Jin, as the primary escort officer for A-009, you understand the severity of its escape… We must recapture and contain it immediately!” Standing at the doorway, a woman with vibrant red hair, clad in a voluminous black trench coat, casually intertwined her fingers behind her head, winding loose strands of her hair. She offered no immediate reply to Wei Shu, her attention captivated by the array of glowing screens. Dozens of technicians sat diligently at their stations, each monitoring a screen. These screens were further divided into numerous partitions, displaying surveillance feeds from the prison gates to the entirety of the containment city. Yet, not a single anomaly was detected. From the moment the breach alarm sounded, A-009 seemed to have dissolved into the ether. The surveillance network, capable of tracking the flight of a mosquito, had failed to capture even a strand of A-009's hair. Nan Jin continued to absentmindedly twirl her hair. Her eyes, once filled with a dull, lifeless gaze, seemed to absorb the light from the numerous screens. The rapid cascade of images—hundreds of surveillance feeds—appeared to slow within her pupils. A-009 had not truly vanished. It possessed no teleportation abilities. It was simply moving at a velocity so extreme that… the standard monitoring staff, unless they significantly reduced playback speed, could not perceive its motion. Sensing the shift in Nan Jin’s eyes, Wei Shu’s expression grew more focused. He raised a hand, signaling his subordinates to maintain silence and allow Nan Jin an uninterrupted observation. The command center fell into a profound quiet. Finally, Nan Jin’s gaze settled on a specific screen. With the playback slowed down by approximately twenty times, the fleeting silhouette of A-009 materialized—an image akin to a swarm of crows, casting a palpable aura of dread. The woman’s eyes shifted deliberately from one screen to another, mentally charting the fugitive’s winding escape path. As she followed its trajectory, a pair of vacant pupils inexplicably welled with tears. “Its last recorded location was… Light Rail Line 13. The train is on its final long stretch, it cannot disembark yet.” The woman in the trench coat glanced at the clock and stated softly, “If we take a direct route, we can intercept it at the tunnel terminus.” Wei Shu was already poised over the console. The mention of Line 13 prompted him to instantly pull up surveillance feeds from key roads along its route, initiating a playback slowdown. Indeed, he soon spotted that elusive, specter-like shadow… after breaching the facility, the shadow had darted towards the outskirts of Da Teng City. “You intend to intercept it alone?” Wei Shu questioned, his brow furrowed. “Apprehending a Class A fugitive is no small feat. I recommend seeking assistance from Mr. Shu directly.” “There isn’t enough time. Our teacher is occupied… If you can guarantee immediate backup, then I can manage this.” Nan Jin turned to Wei Shu, her voice cold. “Besides, can you afford to delay? If we miss this window, the next chance to corner it… who knows when that will be.” Her assessment was sharp and accurate. Wei Shu’s expression darkened. She was right… this was a critical opportunity that could not be squandered. Furthermore, A-009 seemed intent on leaving Da Teng entirely. Tonight marked their best chance; after this, tracking it would be like searching for a needle in a haystack. “Then… initiate pursuit! As long as you can keep A-009 contained, I will ensure ample backup!” Wei Shu’s decision was made, and a sense of relief washed over him. Fortunately, it was Line 13… At this late hour, the light rail heading towards the remote suburbs would likely have no passengers. “Wait… what is that?” “Magnify that.” “Magnify it further.” Suddenly, Wei Shu’s attention was drawn to a swiftly moving black speck in the final surveillance frame. Simultaneously, a series of dark lines appeared above his head…Upon magnifying the surveillance footage, a boy, appearing to be seventeen or eighteen, could faintly be discerned rushing towards the departing final train. Who was this unfortunate individual destined for such a fate? “…Can you rescue him?” Wei Shu turned his gaze towards Nan Jin. The woman in the trench coat remained silent. “Line 13 traverses a lengthy tunnel. He will be confined with A-009 for a duration of… approximately 20 minutes.” Nan Jin glanced at her watch, delivering a grim jest with a lack of emotion, “By the time I arrive, he might still retain some warmth.” Wei Shu's expression turned complex. He had reviewed the related files and understood with perfect clarity what spending twenty minutes alongside A-009 entailed. If any warmth remained, it would indeed be a fortunate outcome. A silent wish for the boy's well-being was offered. Then, composing himself, he took a deep breath, pushing such distracting thoughts aside. The paramount concern at this juncture was the orchestration of the impending containment procedure. He had fully committed to this path; there was no avenue for retreat. Tonight, the successful recapture of A-009 was imperative to curtailing further casualties to the barest minimum… “Establish a connection with ‘Deep Sea,’ grant authorization, I require assistance.”
