’Damn it. Every time I think I’ve finally got this world figured out, it finds a new way to show me how little I actually know.’
"My level maxed out on day one," Zia said. "One of the women down there lent me her power, and from that point on my only job was gathering enough life essence to incarnate her."
"And what better lambs than elves, when they live longer than every other race? So it started with that elf kingdom. I gathered more and more essence, while manipulating the demons into handling the dirty parts for me."
"Those fools treated me like a god when I incarnated an arch demon they had worshipped for generations, and the thing was nothing more than a butler to my patron, the demon lord of obsession."
"The same goes for that one," she added, pointing at the dark cult leader. "I promised him the incarnation of some arch demon."
"Everything was running smoothly until you barged in and made a mess of all of it. The demon realm’s army and the elf kingdom were both hunting me and my labyrinth. I cursed whoever was behind it, I wanted vengeance, and then I found out it was you. Again."
"All that anger, all that revenge, it drained straight out of me the moment I saw you on a screen again, fighting some professor."
"I wanted to meet you so badly, but I was busy with a war of my own. And when they finally had me cornered, help came from the other demon lords."
"They offered me their legions, their arch demons and their higher demons, and more importantly, power and guidance."
"They also told me the rate I was gathering essence at wouldn’t be enough to incarnate even one of them. And even if I managed it, a single demon lord wouldn’t be enough to shield me from the crimes I’d committed, or from the celestials who would come running the moment word of an incarnation got out."
"So my task changed, and the size of my sacrifices changed with it. One of them told me a time would come when I’d get my chance to ascend to Luminera, where a single kill is worth the life essence of thousands."
"So I shook hands with them too. I spent every drop I’d gathered incarnating their armies, pushed back everyone hunting me, and then I waited for that chance," she said, glancing back at Loki.
"A few days ago it arrived. That celestial woman offered me entry into her realm in exchange for helping her with this war. Profit on both ends, really. I got my way up there, and I got to meet you."
"I always suspected some champion was behind the elves disappearing," Jax said. "I never once thought there was a plan this grand sitting underneath it..." He let that settle for a second before moving on. "But why tell me any of this? I could destroy you and everything you’ve built. We’re all rivals here."
"Isn’t it obvious?" Zia said. "Because I need you. Because I want you at my side."
"Sorry, but I’m turning that down. I’m on humanity’s side. I want to kill my way through Luminera and leave chaos behind me just as much as you do, but I’d never back you in any of this."
"You see, Jax, this is a virtual world to people like us. Once it’s finished we go back to our usual work and our usual lives, and we leave this place and every power we were handed behind us."
"So why care about people we’re never going to see again? Our time here will be like a dream, and we’ll forget it eventually anyway. So why bother?" She tilted her head. "Why not spend what’s left of it getting to know me instead."
"Because that’s the only thing that matters from here."
"Alright, enough," Jax said. "Going by what your patron is called, the demon lord of obsession, I’d say she’s done a real number on your head. So let me be clear. Forget me. I’m already in love with someone, and there’s no room left for anybody else."
Zia went still for a moment. "I thought that might happen. It’s alright, though. Love isn’t as fixed as people like to believe. The mind changes. Feelings shift. What feels absolute today can look very different given time."
"Relax, I won’t force you to love me, but I won’t be giving up either. I know how to get the answer I want to hear... and I have all the time I need to make sure it’s the only answer left. And if all of that still fails, I’ll always have the wish to make my dream real."
Which was a contradiction if Jax had ever heard one. I won’t force you, but I will force you.
"That’s never happening, because you and I believe in completely different things. To you, this world is just another dream. To me... it’s the first dream that ever felt worth staying asleep for. A home that actually felt like a home. And to keep it that way, I’ll destroy you, or anyone else who dares to disturb it."
He pulled his second sword out of the dimensional ring, took one in each hand, and set his weight to charge.
"So this world is what corrupted my man," Zia said. "Then it’s my duty to show him what reality looks like. Sorry, this might hurt a little, but you’ve left me no choice except to kidnap you out of here."
Dark aura started bleeding off her while she spoke, thick enough to crawl along the ground in every direction, and the sky above them clouded over and turned black.
Then, before she could attack, a rock smacked her clean across the cheek.
She hissed and looked down, where the rock turned out to be the head of the sea elf king. Hissing again, she turned toward the commotion and found a woman hanging in the air above it.
It was Rora, and she looked thoroughly pissed off, while behind her stood the entire Order of Claude with Claude himself at the front of them.
Rora was angry because Claude hadn’t let her enjoy herself once all night, or do a single thing the way she wanted it done.
Zia put a hand to the ground at that and flooded her mana into the dirt. Sigil after sigil lit up across the field in front of her, and then her summoning magic dragged countless demons up out of them.
Meanwhile another group came in from the left, finished with their own enemies and moving straight for the area, carrying the most dangerous aura anywhere on it.
The Astryx Academy professors and students.
Loki’s eyes gleamed with childish joy at the sight, and she pulled open portals of her own all along the far side of the field to pour the rest of her army through them.
Then she looked over at the dragon woman and the dark academy headmaster. "You’re both free to do as you like now."
Nobody on that field was happier to hear it than the dragon. She was already gliding up into the air and charging at the professors when her body started to come apart and rebuild itself, wings unfolding wider than the treeline as she shifted into her true form.
