Jax narrowly escapes Ashrah's pursuit with an invisibility cloak, only for the effect to wear off. Sianna arrives with her griffin, and Jax confronts her about her past betrayal. Delphine defends her mother, revealing Sianna's concern for Jax. As Sianna orders a ritual, black flames erupt, engulfing the grove and consuming Ashrah. Sianna then dismisses Jax to wait for the flames to die down.

Delphine let it all pour out on Jax, though she kept her voice low so her mother, still standing with her back to them, wouldn’t catch a word.

"Yes, I am ailing right now, and it’s entirely thanks to a pervert like you. A man with zero nobility who just flops himself open whenever the mood strikes, never once sparing a thought for the women standing around him. Have you no shame at all?"

Jax’s finger snapped against her forehead. "Noble? Me? I’m a mere commoner, sweetheart. And unless my memory’s failing me, weren’t you the very one who cursed me as a peasant, a lowborn, a nobody unworthy of even standing in your presence? Looks like you aren’t lying about your sickness. You’ve gone and forgotten your own memories."

Delphine rubbed at her forehead, where a red mark bloomed instantly across her pale skin. "How dare you lay a finger on me, you filthy commoner."

"See? It’s working." Jax grinned. "Your memory’s crawling right back. A few more good hits and you’ll be perfectly cured."

Delphine’s hand shot up toward him, then froze mid-air as reality caught up with her. If she pulled anything stupid, her mother would have her join her brother, the poor soul currently under house arrest and sentenced to an endless rotation of chores.

So that reaching hand curled slowly into a fist right in front of his face.

Instead, she extended a single finger. The middle one. "...Go to hell."

And in that exact moment, a hand settled onto her shoulder from behind. Delphine’s whole body seized up, because she knew precisely whose hand it was.

She was screaming on the inside, but she scrambled to cover anyway. "M-mother. I was merely, ah, reminding the professor that he’s Number One among your honored guests, so please don’t get the wrong id—"

Before she could bury herself any deeper with her own idiocy, Sianna spoke without turning around, her eyes locked on something ahead. "Delphine. Move back."

Delphine caught the sheer seriousness carved into her mother’s face as she turned. Then her gaze followed it to the woman Sianna was squaring off against.

"Impossible—" The word slipped out before she could stop it. Because there stood the orc queen, the one who’d had no chance of surviving the primordial flames, the flames that had never once in recorded history failed to execute whatever they touched.

Ashrah was an utter ruin. Bleeding from a dozen places, her body a roadmap of fresh scars and blackened burn marks. And yet, somehow, she was still on her feet.

Her blurred vision found Jax, guarded by a woman, and to Ashrah’s shattered mind, Sianna’s stance said only one thing.

Fury surged through her all over again. The trio could feel it in the air itself, as though something sharp were being dragged across their skin and sucked hungrily into the orc.

"Mok tar! Urg ma’kar!" Ashrah snarled. (

Sianna didn’t understand the words, but she understood the rage well enough, and exactly who it was pointed at. She turned to Jax. "You should leave this place. I will handle her."

Jax hesitated. He knew full well Sianna might die caught in that fury, and on top of it, he’d had more than his fill of running for one day.

His thoughts scattered as a strange sensation crawled through him, his heart suddenly hammering against his ribs.

When he looked up, Sianna was already deep into her casting. Dozens of glowing magic circles bloomed around Ashrah as she staggered forward. "Take Delphine with you," Sianna said, not looking back.

"No, mother, I am not leaving your side—" Delphine started.

But before she could get any further, Jax seized her by the wrist and hauled her along with him toward the exit.

Watching them go, Sianna let out a breath of relief. Her eyes stayed fixed on Ashrah, and just before she unleashed everything, she murmured, "What in the world is wrong with you, you monster."

From every one of those magic circles, a screaming banshee mouth tore open.

The shrieks sent visible ripples warping through the air, all of them converging on Ashrah like a hundred invisible blades.

More blood burst from her wounds as she buckled, screaming, her eardrums giving out under the sound. Red leaked from her ears.

She dropped hard onto one knee. But after only a few seconds, she forced herself back up, her eyes hunting until they found Jax, tucked behind a small house in the distance.

And she kept walking. Even with the banshees locked on her, straining to drag her down. Sianna’s spell finally guttered out, but the duchess stayed calm and cold as ever, even as her attack failed and an overpowered monster kept crawling toward her.

Instead, she simply raised a hand. "Echo Hammer."

A vast portal yawned open above Ashrah’s head, and an unseen force crashed down through it, slamming her flat and pinning her to the ground.

Sianna couldn’t quite believe her eyes. That spell had crushed grown bodies into paste, and yet this obsessed thing was already dragging herself onward on all fours.

Without missing a beat, Sianna conjured a flock of crows around the pinned queen, then detonated the entire ring of them at once.

The blast tore through the radius, throwing up a thick wall of dirt and debris. Sianna’s eyes stayed nailed to the spot where Ashrah should have been, waiting for the dust to clear and confirm, at long last, that it was finished.

But before the dust could settle, a massive boulder came screaming toward her at terrifying speed. The sheer force behind the throw shattered the thing mid-flight, scattering it into a storm of jagged fragments before it ever reached her.

Sianna had no time to cast, and no room to dodge a spray that wide. Still, she flung herself hard to the left, and by pure luck avoided a killing blow, but her left leg didn’t escape clean. A dozen shards of rock kissed straight through her pale skin.

Clutching her bleeding leg as the dust finally drifted down, she found the orc queen had already closed the entire distance.

Sianna clicked her tongue. At this range she was useless, her spells would only carve into herself, and a physical brawl was off the table with her leg giving out beneath her.

But the queen ignored her entirely. Ashrah simply limped right past, not sparing her so much as a glance. Sianna turned, following that path, only to find Jax and Delphine peeking out from cover, faces pinched with concern.

She cursed them under her breath. "Damned fools. I bleed to buy the two of them a clean exit, and they crawl right back to gawk at the show."

Jax planted himself in front of Delphine, shielding her, as Ashrah closed the last few inches. And the moment she reached him, her ruined face crumpled into tears, her bloody hand rising to trace along his cheek, as though every horror she’d waded through had, in the end, been worth this single touch.

She threw her arms around him and held on tight. Pressed against her, Jax could see every one of her injuries, could feel the frantic stutter of her heartbeat, feel a body teetering right on the edge of collapse.

And then, without warning, she shoved him away and rounded on Sianna, fury blazing back to life as she sensed her attack.

She could barely make out the transparent prison already forming around her, the walls of it shrinking inward to crush what was left of her broken body. But with a raw scream and a surge of pure rage, she shattered Sianna’s cage outright.

Then she wrenched a thick fence post clean out of the ground, hoisting it high like a spear, aiming to put Sianna out of her misery for good. But before she could bring it down—

Pain exploded through her chest. The tip of a sword jutted out from between her breasts, someone having driven it clean through her heart from behind.

Her whole body went numb, powerless in an instant. Slowly, she turned to look at the hands that had ended her.

And there stood Jax, drawing his blade back out of her. Ashrah crumpled to the ground.

Tears of betrayal rolled down the sides of her face, and yet, even now, her hands still reached weakly for him, desperate to hold onto him for the last moment of her life.

Jax felt a pang of pity. So he lowered himself to the ground and rested her head against one of his knees before he spoke. "Look. I’m sorry, alright? But I had no choice. You were being a bit too much."
