When Jax embraced the full power of the Carnage Blade, he unleashed brutal destruction upon Harry's forces. Harry attempted various traps, including his puppets, mages, and sea elves, but Jax overcame them all. Harry then tried a devastating curse sigil, only for Jax's divine companion to nullify it. Finally, Harry ordered a massive sun-like energy blast, believing it would kill Jax, but Jax emerged from the rubble, heavily injured but alive, and confronted Harry. Harry, in his panic, summoned Duchess Sianna, Delphine, and Nadia to aid him against Jax.

Jax looked the trio over, one by one.

Sianna carried nothing on her face at all, only stared back at him with that flat, unreadable mask of hers.

Nadia, on the other hand, was plainly still nursing the grudge from before, from the night Jax had humiliated her mistress in front of everyone.

And Delphine looked at him with fear and concern written all over her, every bit of it for the bloody and ruined state he was standing in.

He sensed more presences lurking out beyond the three of them, then flicked his eyes to his status window.

The numbers were climbing, all thanks to the recovery potions he’d swallowed from Astrid’s dimensional ring and the slow trickle of regen that came baked into every champion.

But it still wasn’t enough. Not enough to fight, not in the shape he was in. And he knew full well that Duchess Sianna was the single sharpest weapon in the vampire kingdom, famed for her own prowess and for a corps of women corpses that could go toe to toe with their own royal army.

Even buried under all those odds, Jax held onto a smile. "I was starting to wonder why you’d been keeping so quiet this whole time. I figured maybe the guilt had finally caught up with you. That you’d decided to let me slip away. Or maybe you’d worked out that crossing me only ever buys a person more pain."

He tilted his head. "But looking at you now, that wasn’t it at all, was it? You were simply waiting. Holding out for the perfect moment to run me down."

"Though I’ll admit, I never pictured you doing something this insane. Joining hands with the enemies of all humanity, and all of it just for little old me. Tell me, was I really that good that one day?"

He pressed his palm flat against his face and dragged it slowly down, peeling the thick crust of blood away as it went. The red rolled off his fingertips in fat drops, as if the battlefield hadn’t earned the right to leave its mark on him in the first place.

Then he spoke again. "And I know you’re not nearly dumb enough to walk out here into the open, Duchess. Not with a leash still sitting around that neck of yours, and my one pending wish parked right where I left it. So I’m going to guess you’ve got an ace tucked away somewhere. Go on, then. Play it. Before I get bored and command you to put that sword through your own throat instead."

Sianna didn’t so much as twitch. She held her ground exactly as she was, arms crossed, while a frustrated Harry hauled himself back up onto his knees and rounded on the women. "What in the hells are you waiting for? Finish him, now, before he claws his strength back."

And that was the moment Sianna uncrossed her arms and began moving out from behind Harry, toward Jax. Or so Harry believed.

Because in that very same breath, the last few dozen of his summons were ripped clean out of the air by hundreds of magic arrows and bursting spells, so many of them they swallowed the whole sky and left the remaining undead with nowhere left to run.

As the slaughter of Harry’s thousands wrapped up, he looked around, lost, trying to make sense of it. And then his eyes landed on the members of Sianna’s corps.

Fifty women, every one of them a vampire or a half-vampire, emerged out of the distance, marched forward toward Sianna, and dropped as one to their knees before her.

Harry’s head snapped back to Sianna, horror flooding his face as the betrayal finally landed. "You traitor—"

But before he could get another word out, a rapier came whistling at his face, hurled from a distance by Commander Nadia, forcing him to throw himself sideways and crash down onto the ground.

And that was when Sianna fed Harry her boot, jamming the toe of it straight down his throat.

"You’re a fool if you ever believed you’d win me over with something as cheap as revenge. My revenge was never worth the risk of watching everything I’ve spent a lifetime building get torn to the ground, if this war happened to go the wrong way."

She pulled her boot back out and turned to walk toward her kneeling group.

But behind her, struggling and hacking for air after that lovely deepthroat, Harry forced the words out. "Then why? Why did you join us in the first place? Why play the spy inside the academy’s own alliance, feeding Loki their every secrets and moves up till now? Why abandon the post the mage tower handed you and let the comrades marching right beside you die? Why carve open a path for me and those horny ogres to push in deeper?"

Sianna stopped, halfway through her walk back to her members. She knew it was a fair thing for him to throw at her. Because she had done things not a soul alive could understand. Not her own daughter. Not even the rest of her corps.

But how could she ever begin to explain it. That their proud, untouchable mistress had been scared half out of her skin ever since that absurd little meeting with Jax. Revenge? She wouldn’t dare so much as let the word form in her head, not with the witch’s parting line still echoing around inside her skull. I am watching you.

And those four words alone had been more than enough to drive her this far, to drag herself into saving Jax the instant she’d realized this whole rebellion was aimed at his head. If she wanted any hope of landing on the witch’s good side, then she had to land on Jax’s good side first.

Of course, she could have simply ignored all of it and let the man die. That had been an option too.

But then, what if the witch of eternity flew into a rage and erased her from the world for failing to act? She was frightened down to her marrow, and it had taken exactly one brush with that witch’s presence to turn her from a prideful vampire into an obedient little dog.

"I won’t waste my breath answering a man who’s already dying," Sianna said.

She ignored him entirely after that, took a cloak from one of the members she’d quietly ordered a moment earlier, and held it out toward Delphine. "Go. Carry this to your professor. And deliver a message to him along with it."

Delphine accepted both the cloak and the words, then started toward Jax with a whole mountain of confusion piled on top of her, utterly lost as to why her mother was behaving like this around him.

’If I set the revenge angle aside,’ Delphine thought, eyes drifting over the blood-soaked ground, ’it only makes less sense why mother would be helping him. The woman has loathed every man alive for as long as I can remember, to the point that nearly all our staff are female, and she treats her own son, my own brother, with open prejudice. So what on earth changed? What makes this one man so special?’

She kept circling back to her mother’s face while the three of them had crouched there, hiding their presence and watching the fight from afar. The way her mother had been sweating, jaw hanging open, the moment Jax took that monstrous fireball head-on.

And the order her mother had drilled into them from the very start. The top priority is to protect Professor Jax. Saving the world comes second.

Her head throbbed just trying to untangle it, so she let out a sigh and made up her mind. ’I’ll simply ask the professor himself. He’s bound to know the reason behind mother’s behavior. We aren’t on rotten terms anymore like we used to be, and he even said he owes me a favor for helping with his presents. He’ll answer me.’

Delphine was so thoroughly drowned in her own thoughts that she clean forgot to watch where her feet were carrying her, and she walked face-first into Jax.

He caught her by the arm before she could topple, and it was right then, this close up, that Delphine registered two things at once.

One, that Jax was completely, utterly naked. And two, that his dick was pressed firmly against her hip. Its warmth and irregular bulgy shape were impossible to miss through the thin fabric.

She went scarlet to the roots of her hair and panicked, screwing her eyes shut so hard they ached, thrusting the cloak out at him with both hands. "P-professor, for the love of the gods please put these on this instance."

Meanwhile inside her head she was already picturing Jax’s body even with her eyes closed. Those dangling plums and his thick dick even when soft had completely wrecked her old sex ed lessons about her assumptions.
