Jax felt deep frustration. Real, burning frustration. Within his mind, he questioned Echidna. "I’ve fought a Celestial before. But right now a mere weapon of a Celestial is giving me this much trouble. It’s just a cheat. Hercules must have been some kind of rank holder among them."
A peal of laughter rang inside his head. Childish in nature, the type of giggle that came from someone who truly relished pure foolishness.
"Do you honestly believe you could endure a Celestial? Darling, you couldn’t even withstand their gaze for one minute, much less battle one. I mean, your struggle against just a simple weapon reveals precisely how pitifully feeble you remain."
She tossed in offhandedly. "And to clarify, no Celestial can descend from the upper realm without permission from the primordial gods. So the one you faced was likely an ascendant."
Jax responded. "Ascendant?"
"Something akin to an ascendant Celestial. They get selected by the true sleazy Celestials lacking direct control over the mortal realm. In return for power, these ascendants watch over the mortal world and preserve balance. Whether by operating for the Celestials or allowing Celestials to descend with permission if matters escalate."
She hesitated briefly.
"Well, that’s the stated reason for their granted access. Truthfully, they’ve exploited it for all sorts of shady dealings."
Jax absorbed this and replied. "So you’re saying these godlike Celestials are pursuing me?"
Echidna affirmed. "Yup. That’s why Mother instructed me to assist you."
"But who is this Mother? And why are these Celestials targeting me?"
"I don’t know the full details. But while you lingered near my sealed soul in that graveyard, I sensed Mother’s presence within you. When I probed further, I rediscovered her after so long."
Her tone softened momentarily.
"She commanded me to aid you. And passed a message along. The primordial gods disapprove of your cheating in the game. You’ve meddled with outside forces alien to this world and the game. Thus, they’re restoring balance against you."
She continued. "Or more accurately, imposing a handicap."
Jax gazed forward at Zharina, who was regaining her footing. A wicked grin crept over his features.
"Then let them come. I’ll demonstrate precisely what I do to these petty handicaps they dispatch to even my game."
His inner voice turned steely, bearing the resolve of a man driven to his breaking point.
"If the world opposes my dream, I’ll shatter it utterly. Be it Celestial, ascendant, or even the primordial beings themselves. And for whatever pest they summon next, I’ll deliver a warning: they’re not imposing a handicap. They’re merely picking who dies first."
His jaw clenched tight.
"I vow to instill utter dread into their core. I’ll etch into their souls the savage truth of what befalls those who try to tear away a man’s love, his dreams, his very world. If they seek to strip my existence bare, then I’ll reduce their entire realm to oblivion."
A fiendish smirk broke across his face as he rolled his neck.
"So the game flips to hell mode? Perfect. That’s right in my wheelhouse. Time to unleash the beast I’ve kept caged just to play nice in this dull easy mode."
Echidna burst into laughter once more at his declaration. Her voice erupted in waves of real mirth amid the chuckles. "You— pfft— you idiot— hahaha— do you truly think you can challenge primordials? Bahahaha! Just see how this feeble little dragon is pounding you senseless right now!"
Jax fired back instantly. "Says the one who got her ass beaten by mere mortals."
The laughter ceased abruptly. Like a switch flipped off on a melody.
Her voice returned sharp, like a brat defending her prized possession. "You know nothing! And anyway, that Odin scum orchestrated my sealing! Those kings, those mortals—they were just his puppets! Also... never mind. A deranged idiot dreaming of facing primordials could never grasp the majesty of this Echidna!"
Jax braced for Zharina’s renewed charge as she advanced once more. Mentally, he declared. "All beings possess flaws, you chaotic diva. Mortal or god alike. Every entity can fall. You either smash them externally with sheer force. Or erode them internally until their psyche crumbles."
He clasped his battered sword.
"It all boils down to the mindset: wielder of the hammer or victim awaiting the blow."
Silence met his words. Echidna was utterly speechless for the first time.
Jax gazed forward. Zharina advanced with deliberate slowness now. Every step precise and restrained. No longer did she charge wildly. She adapted to him precisely as he adapted to her.
In his mind, he declared, "Let me give you a demonstration first. By defeating her."
That sparked Echidna's recovery. Amid fresh bursts of giggles, she taunted, "Really? All I remember is that you weren’t able to land a single hit on her. And trust me, you won’t be able to even make a dent with how weak you are right now."
Jax shot back, "Wanna make a bet on that? Also about the weak part, I get it now. I understand exactly how weak I am right now. But you see, after winning this fight and claiming something, I will max out my stats and climb the ranks soon enough."
Confusion laced Echidna's words as she asked, "Max? Stats? What does that even mean?"
Jax brushed her off. "Leave it. Your stupid brain can’t handle the explanation."
"Tsk."
As Jax observed Zharina narrowing the gap even more, he remarked, "If I can’t land a hit while she’s holding onto those gauntlets, then why not just steal them and make it even? Also, I want to test this overpowered celestial power for myself."
Echidna erupted in such wild laughter that she nearly choked on her own hilarity. "Steal?! As if she would let you take them! And besides, even if you somehow managed to rip them off her hands, it wouldn’t matter! That artifact only acknowledges its master! The mana signature of that dragon has been bound to the gauntlets! If you try to force them on, they’ll just reject you while giving you some lovely pain as a parting gift!"
A sly grin crossed Jax's face. "Thanks for the info. Now I know exactly how to make these two pets obey their new master."
Echidna’s laughter cut off abruptly.
"All I have to do is copy her mana signature."
