Let’s Play Minecraft in a World of Swords and Spells Chapter 241: Volume 6 - 19: Design Issue
(Walson)
Crafting a [Steam Motion Armor] that functions effectively without relying on a [Thermodynamic Core] presents a significant hurdle. When those skilled dwarf artisans operate their [Steam Motion Armor], they do so by directly manipulating the [Thermodynamic Core] housed within the armor's various limb sections, employing their [Metalforge Manipulation] technique.
Consequently, despite their mechanical appearance, these armored suits are not as intricately designed as the mechs depicted in historical media. Because this world is deeply rooted in magic, the internal mechanisms of these machines are, in fact, considerably more straightforward.
The schematics provided by Chuck solidified my understanding. Many of the complex mechanical operations from my previous existence are delegated to the [Thermodynamic Core]. The dwarves' focus is on designing different output mechanisms, weaponry, and structural components.
However, all of this relies fundamentally on the [Thermodynamic Core], a unique material exclusively manufactured by the dwarves.
Thus far, I've contemplated several potential strategies to bypass the necessity of the [Thermodynamic Core]. In theory, some configurations, incorporating [Redstone], might enable a mech capable of locomotion, though offensive capabilities would likely remain limited.
Furthermore, my reserve of [Redstone] is steadily diminishing, making it prudent to conserve its use. Allocating a substantial quantity of [Redstone] to the construction of mechs would be inefficient and counterproductive, an outcome I am keen to prevent.
Apart from these considerations, dispensing with the [Thermodynamic Core] introduces another critical issue: the capacity of the operator's physical body to endure the intense strain of piloting a mech in combat. This leads us to the supplementary benefits conferred by the [Thermodynamic Core].
Just as elves gain a boost to their physical prowess when wielding their [Elf Weapon], so too do dwarves operating [Steam Motion Armor] augmented with the [Thermodynamic Core] receive protective advantages.
Indeed, this benefit is exclusive to '[Thermodynamic Core] crafted personally,' implying that every combat-ready individual within this city also possesses considerable skill as a mech engineer. Could it be surprising, given the dwarves' renowned craftsmanship?
Therefore, the crux of the dilemma is this: Should we forgo the [Thermodynamic Core], we face not only challenges in power and control but, most critically, even if I succeed in building a mech that can win competitions, the pilot might be reduced to mere fragments after the engagement.
I must admit, Chuck, you have truly presented me with an exceptionally difficult proposition. Do you genuinely believe I possess the capability to accomplish such a feat?
Within the modest chamber adjacent to the workshop, I sit in solitary contemplation at a corner table, my gaze fixed upon the design blueprints. The deadline looms, less than a month away, and ideally, I wish to complete this project before then, avoiding the extreme measure of relying on Grace's teleportation to escape with everyone.
"Walson, come see what I’ve created!" At that precise moment, the door to the small room swings open, and Tanaya's voice abruptly pulls me from my profound reflections.
"What is happening?"
Observing Tanaya's silent, joyful turn and hasty exit, I find myself smiling and shaking my head.
Ah well, I have been sedentary for long enough; it is time for a change of scenery and to investigate the situation.
Following Tanaya's retreating form, I emerge from the confined room and step into the bustling workshop. Upon entering, a sudden cloud of swirling dust engulfs me, catching me entirely off guard.
"Huh? What is transpiring here?"
Tanaya stands with an air of proud accomplishment beside a colossal contraption, her eyes alight with an unspoken plea for admiration.
It was a sizable, unrefined mechanical appendage, suspended mid-air by two robust iron chains. The mechanical limb was balled into a fist, and before it lay the source of the airborne particulates – the immense ore chunk I had retrieved from the stone gambling zone, or rather, its former self, now reduced to a fragmented heap.
"Walson, observe my creation! I studied texts on [Mana Reactors], experimented with integrating [Redstone], and then emulated Melon-nee's [Tyrant’s Arm]. It's now supremely potent – capable of shattering boulders!!" Tanaya declared with infectious enthusiasm, her arms thrown wide.
Approaching, I take a closer look at the mechanical wrist Tanaya had painstakingly assembled; its construction was readily apparent even without an external casing.
"Hmm?"
Employing the inexhaustible power of [Redstone] in conjunction with pistons, applying force repeatedly to the replica reactor's conduit... to generate concentrated air pressure for propulsion and close-quarters air cannon functionality!?
Such might! It is no wonder it could obliterate ore! Following this principle, provided the reactor sustains the load and given sufficient duration, its power is virtually boundless!
Astonishing!? Though its appearance is rudimentary and there is ample scope for refinement, this represents undeniably groundbreaking technology!? Even I had never conceived of such an application!!!
"Tanaya, did you construct this entirely on your own?" I inquire, turning to face her.
"Yes! I built it myself!" Tanaya's expectant gaze, seeking commendation, remains unwavering. I cannot resist the urge to smile and gently tousle her hair.
"Tanaya, your skill is incredible. How did you devise this?""Ohh~ Well, when Derisha-nee was training with Belle-nee earlier, she utilized wind compression magic. After some contemplation, I realized I could replicate that technique," Tanaya explained.
I understand now~ So the inspiration came from wind element magic?
To create something like this based solely on that impression... Could it be that Tanaya possesses an unforeseen talent for manipulating [Redstone]? After all, in the original Minecraft, proficiency with [Redstone] was highly dependent on individual aptitude.
Let alone basic contraptions, one would occasionally witness ingenious individuals in videos constructing functional computers or elaborate mechanisms using [Redstone]...
Tanaya may not be at that pinnacle yet, but she certainly might have the potential!? I had never instructed her in machine construction! My intention in giving her [Redstone] was merely to provide her with a material akin to LEGO blocks, a gateway into engineering. I never anticipated her fabricating something of such substantial power.
"Tanaya, what would transpire if your user proved incapable of managing the potency of this device?" I inquired.
"Mm, I'm not entirely certain what you mean, Walson, but if they were unable to handle it, could we not simply entrust it to someone else?" Tanaya responded.
Entrust it to someone else? That is a rather absurd and amusing reply.
But... hmm? If the operator were not a dwarf...
"Perverted Goblin!" Just as a profound realization was dawning upon me, Belle's sharp exclamation abruptly shattered my train of thought.
"What troubles you?" I gently patted Tanaya's head, indicating she should go play elsewhere for a short while.
"I wish for you to meet someone," Belle stated. "Let us adjourn to a more private location; it would be best to conduct this conversation discreetly."
