Isekai Nonbiri Nouka Chapter 5 - Food Security
Previously on Isekai Nonbiri Nouka...
After finishing with the toilet, I returned to my bed anddrifted off to sleep.
While I don't typically consider sleeping during the day to be a wise choice, I was undeniably exhausted.
I recall sleeping for approximately three hours, yet the sun had yet to dip below the horizon.
Let me assess my current situation.
My provisions for today—a bed, water, fire, a toilet, and food—are all in order.
However, when considering tomorrow, the matter of food becomes a pressing concern.
At present, the only sustenance I possess is the meat from the rabbit-like creature I was fortunate enough to acquire.
If I were to continuously utilize my all-purpose farming tool, hunger would not be an issue. This would extend my food supply for a duration of roughly five days.
I would prefer to seek out new sources of food before that time arrives.
Nevertheless... I ought to give thought to the night that precedes it.
It is perfectly natural for one to sleep when night falls.
But the forest is a frightening place.
The rabbit, with its formidable fangs, proved to be hostile.
If that rabbit was already so formidable, what could one expect from a bear? Is this not a perilous situation?
I have fire, but... I've never heard of wild animals being deterred by flames.
Regardless of what may come, preparation is necessary...
...
For the immediate future, I require a door to secure the entrance of the shelter I fashioned from a tree trunk.
Utilizing the all-purpose farming tool, I felled a tree of a suitable size and crafted a door complete with a handle.
This door is rather heavy... Will I encounter difficulties in its operation?
Upon closing the door, the interior was plunged into complete darkness. This presented a variety of inconveniences.
... If I were to use fire in here, I would perish from a lack of oxygen.
I shall tackle this challenge at a later time.
Next, the fence.
I intend to construct a fence that encircles my shelter, the well, and the toilet.
With the assistance of the all-purpose farming tool, I felled straight trees and stripped them of their branches.
While I refer to it as a fence, lacking any nails, it is merely a form of enclosure. I surrounded the area with logs.
Without the all-purpose farming tool, moving these trees would be an insurmountable task. Even at a height of only about one meter, it would at least serve as an obstacle for wild beasts.
The satisfaction of insisting on enclosing my domain with a fence brought me a sense of accomplishment as I managed to secure a sizable area.
I estimate the dimensions to be approximately one hundred by one hundred meters.
Did I perhaps overdo it?
Regardless, with the completion of the log fence, I decided to retire for the night as darkness had already fallen.
I shut the door.
It was pitch black.
Since no work could be done, I suppose it was a good thing?
......
.........
.............
Air holes!
Dangerous, dangerous!
Due to the darkness, I experienced a brief moment of panic when I couldn't locate the door.
I managed to open the door, create some air holes within it, and then finally went to bed.
*Phew*.
The following morning.
I began digging on the exterior of the log fence using the hoe attachment.
The log fence alone left me feeling uneasy, a sentiment that caused me to awaken several times during the night.
I wish to dig with vigor using the hoe to ensure a sound sleep.
The width is approximately one meter and fifty centimeters, and the depth is two meters. (As measured by eye)
While constructing the log fence, I made sure to leave a gap where the entrance would be, but I have since surrounded the area with a moat.
Consequently, I fashioned a bridge using a wooden plank.
This plank is too heavy for me to move, but thanks to the all-purpose farming tool, my current situation, being alone, presents no difficulties.
Yup.
Completing this task brought me a sense of satisfaction.
Now, this place is secure.
...... Perhaps it is secure.
Yup.
I want to believe that it is safe.
Well... The security of the shelter is now established, so the next priority is food...
The digging had consumed a considerable amount of time, and the sun was already beginning to descend.
Is it better not to push myself too hard?
This will be my final task for today.
I thought this because this is not a situation to be treated lightly.
If I do not utilize the all-purpose farming tool, my physical strength will diminish.
Therefore, I resolved to till the land, transforming it into a field using the hoe function of the all-purpose farming tool until sunset.
In any case, my primary objective was farming.
I affixed the hoe attachment and commenced plowing.
Was there a standard size for a field?
Well, even if there were, I would be unable to take measurements.
Thus, I decided to create ridges in an area of approximately fifty meters square.
All of this work was accomplished with the hoe.
It proved to be quite enjoyable.
The field was completed in short order.
To prevent inadvertently trampling it, I slightly elevated the perimeter of the field.
It felt satisfying.
....
Then, I realized something.
I had just now noticed.
.....There were neither seeds nor seedlings.
There is no point in creating a field!
I spent the entire night creating a field.
I stayed up all night.
The moonlight was bright, so I was not concerned about the darkness.
Swinging the hoe, I constructed a field.
Carrots will go here, and potatoes will be planted there.
Cabbage is over there, and I wonder what should be planted in that section?
This was a complete act of escapism.
By utilizing the all-purpose farming tool, I did not experience thirst, hunger, or sleepiness.
Continuous use allows for infinite exertion.
I became aware that morning had arrived and surveyed the log fence and the moat encircling my shelter.
Hahaha.
I wonder if there are any vegetables that can be cultivated in this forest.
I was left with no alternative but to commence plowing the forest.
It's incredibly convenient to move around while wielding the all-purpose farming tool! Perhaps through this, I might just stumble upon some cultivable vegetables.
Regardless, any grass or trees struck by the hoe-form of this versatile tool are instantly converted into fertilizer.
My current skill level isn't quite high enough to swing this thing while simultaneously observing my surroundings.
And just like that, I managed to hunt a rabbit using its fangs.
Hahaha.
I've done it again, haven't I?
It’s a rabbit, no doubt about it.
What in the world is this?
Is it a common occurrence for the rabbits in this area to leap right in front of me?
Furthermore, they appear to be displaying aggression.
Just like the last time, its head turned into fertilizer, and its body remained because the hoe struck its neck.
...I suppose I should gratefully accept this bounty.
Even though I had plowed through the forest until nightfall, I didn't find any vegetation suitable for planting. However, I did come away with three rabbit carcasses.
I did encounter four rabbits, you see... though when I say four, one of them only has its head left as the rest of its body became fertilizer.
This incident has served to repeatedly confirm that anything struck by the hoe transforms into fertilizer.
I clasped my hands together, offering a silent prayer for the departed head.
The rabbit bodies were quite a burden to carry, being roughly the size of a medium dog. Similar to how I handled the trees earlier, I used the hook-form of the all-purpose farming tool to transport them.
This is just one of the many diverse applications for the all-purpose farming tool.
While offering my thanks in various ways, I consumed a rabbit and resolved to get a good night's sleep tonight.
