Isekai Nonbiri Nouka Chapter 1069: Yame Thinks of a Name for the Island

~7 minute read · 1,684 words

My name is Yame.

Apparently, winter has arrived in Big Tree Village.

Village Chief said it suddenly got cold.

I don’t really feel winter on my island.

Ah, no, I can tell that the temperature has dropped.

Just a little, though.

Honestly, the wind and rain are more troublesome on the island than the change in seasons.

They can come suddenly.

Well, I can more or less predict them if I keep an eye on the distant sky.

A new group of residents has arrived on the island.

Chickens from Village Five, three roosters and fifteen hens.

The reason they came from Village Five instead of Big Tree Village is because Village Chief thought the more docile ones would be safer.

Ease of raising them was another consideration.

I don’t think raising chickens is exactly easy, but as long as we keep them supplied with food and water and protect them from predators, we should manage somehow.

We had already built a chicken coop, and we had properly fenced off a yard just for the chickens.

More than half of them escaped on the first day, though.

I underestimated how high chickens could jump.

But the chickens that escaped return to the coop when night comes.

Should I praise them for being smart?

I’m not sure.

Anyway, the island suddenly became much livelier.

After all, the official residents of the island were me, the doll Ivan, and around….23 birds.

The High Elves and Lizardmen are residents of Big Tree Village.

They’re only here on assignment.

So they can’t be counted as residents of the island.

Well, that doesn’t mean I treat them any differently.

Even if they aren’t residents of the island, they’re still companions living here with us.

-0-

Oh, right.

The birds and chickens aren’t fighting.

They seem to be getting along, which is a relief.

The birds even searched for chickens that had gotten lost and guided them back to the coop.

They also show the chickens where they can take shelter when it rains.

Learning where those places are is important, but I’d really prefer it if they didn’t escape in the first place.

-0-

Village Chief has already asked me about bringing bees once the chickens have settled in.

If we have bees, we can get honey.

However, given the environment on the island, I told him we should first investigate whether the bees can adapt.

It would be terrible if they came all this way only for all of them to die.

The problem is that I can’t think of a good way to conduct the investigation.

I think it would be best to bring a few worker bees over and ask them about it… but if the environment isn’t suitable, those worker bees would die.

Hmm.

It would be nice if we had a bee expert.

Heavy rain has continued on the island for about two days.

But the base inn is safe.

The birdhouse and chicken coop are fine too.

The birds and chickens seem rather unhappy about the long rain, though.

I’m relaxing in the inn’s common room, having some tea.

Hmm.

Magic tools provide lighting and temperature control.

There’s a sense of security that comes from being inside a sturdy building that doesn’t even flinch at heavy rain.

Plenty of food.

Hmm, happiness.

I feel like the tea tastes a little better than before.

Ah, this tea isn’t made from grass growing on the island. It’s made from tea leaves from Big Tree Village.

So the High Elves and Lizardmen can drink it without worrying too.

「Yame-san, it’s about time we played bowling. Bowling.」

Oh, sounds good.

I won’t lose.

Bowling is a game where you roll a ball and knock down pins made to look like villains.

Since we can’t go outside during the long rain, bowling has become popular because everyone thinks it’s better to get some exercise, even if it’s just a little.

I don’t dislike card games either.

But we played cards yesterday, so today is bowling.

-0-

After coming in last place in bowling, I went outside in the rain to check on the birdhouse and chicken coop.

I’m sure they’re fine, but just in case.

Damn, if only I had knocked down the thief back then…

No, come to think of it, the High Elves and Lizardmen have already played bowling in Big Tree Village.

They have more experience than me.

I’ve only played a few times.

Was the outcome decided before we even started?

Grrr.

-0-

Heavy rain continued on the third day too.

This really is a long spell of rain.

But at least the wind is weak.

If the wind were strong too, we’d be in serious trouble.

「Yame-san, let’s play this game today. You roll the dice and move forward by the number you roll.」

And the amount of money you have in the game goes up or down depending on what is written on the space you land on.

「Yes. In the end, the person with the most money wins. It’s the latest improved version of something Village Chief made.」

Hmm.

From what I’ve heard, it sounds like a game based entirely on luck, but when I look at the board, some of the spaces have choices that the players have to make.

So it requires not only luck, but also good judgment at key moments.

Heh.

If it’s a game like this, there’s no way I’ll lose!

-0-

Damn, I chose the wrong profession.

Why did I choose Dancer…

I should have thought about the future instead of focusing on the money right in front of me.

I checked on the birdhouse and chicken coop again today.

The chickens took out their frustration over the long rain on me.

Come on, I understand that you’re anxious, but don’t peck me.

I’m not the one making it rain.

-0-

The fourth day was sunny.

Thank goodness.

The ground is still a muddy mess because of the rain, though.

I didn’t really want to let the chickens out into this, but they’ve been cooped up and getting frustrated, so I have no choice.

When I opened the door to the chicken coop, they all rushed out at once.

Ah, they’re getting covered in mud right before my eyes.

I’ll keep this box filled with water, so make sure you take a bath.

If you don’t like water, I’ll put some dry sand over here, so use it to take a dust bath.

And the birds…

Yeah, they’re just flying off wherever they want.

Well, the birds know this island very well.

I want to believe there won’t be any problems.

「Yame-san, we’re going to check the paths.」

The High Elves and Lizardmen waved at me while carrying their tools.

Yeah, do your best.

I’m making lunch.

「Okay!」

-0-

While making food, I thought about a name for the island.

Village Chief asked me to come up with one.

I thought Village Chief could decide it himself, but he said he wasn’t good at coming up with names like this.

I’m not good at it either, though.

Still, this was exactly the kind of thing I should have been thinking about during the long rain.

I regret not doing it then.

When I asked the High Elves, Lizardmen, and the Seakins for ideas, suggestions like Yame Island and Hiraku Island came up.

I’ll keep them as candidates.

Though I’d rather avoid Yame Island.

-0-

The island’s name has been decided.

Big Tree Island.

Simple.

But I like that.

There isn’t actually a tree on the island big enough to be called a Big Tree, though.

Still, it makes the connection to Big Tree Village clear, so that’s good enough.

Those who know will understand.

Yeah.

Village Chief approved the name, so I’ll tell the Seakins too.

I want them to spread the name far and wide.

-0-

Seakins come to Big Tree Island.

I call them the Seakins as a group, but there are actually many different kinds of races among them.

The most numerous are merfolk, Sahagin, aquatic Lizardmen, and sea Elves.

Among them, one mermaid took a liking to the bath by the beach.

Whenever the weather is good, she comes almost every day.

I don’t mind her using it, but she has to wear a swimsuit.

Since she’s a woman, I especially want her to cover her chest.

I suppose that’s just a difference in culture, though.

If she wants to bathe completely naked, she should come to the base instead.

Well, since she’s a mermaid, traveling on land is probably difficult for her.

Maybe she’ll be able to come to the base once the railway Village Chief is working on is completed?

-0-

The mermaid who liked the bath by the beach brought a treasure chest from the bottom of the sea as payment for using the bath.

Apparently, it was recovered from a sunken ship.

If the ship didn’t sink recently, there shouldn’t be any trouble.

Ah, there is trouble.

This treasure chest won’t open.

The lock is incredibly sturdy.

Huh? What is this?

Is the lock a puzzle?

Damn.

This is fun.

I got a little too absorbed in it.

I couldn’t solve it, though.
