Ye Haochuan meets Cao Renshuang, a wealthy young master, who explains the high standards of the Half-Mountain Residence disciple selection, even for existing disciples. The next day, at the gathering of selected candidates, Ye Haochuan is mocked for his low cultivation level, but Cao Renshuang defends him. The other candidates, however, dismiss Ye Haochuan’s potential, just as a distinguished white-clothed youth arrives.

"That’s Ju Yuqu!" Cao Renshuang whispered to Ye Haochuan.

Ye Haochuan nodded slightly, having already deduced it the moment Ju Yuqu made his appearance.

Ju Yuqu was undeniably arrogant; while everyone vied to curry favor with him, he paid them no mind. Regarding the Fox-Faced Lady, he merely sneered before turning away and closing his eyes.

Despite his dismissive attitude, no one near him displayed any displeasure, instead standing obediently a step behind Ju Yuqu, appearing like his personal guards.

The Fox-Faced Lady seemed somewhat let down and could only step back half a pace, positioning herself behind Ju Yuqu.

However, that slight shift allowed her to notice Ye Haochuan and Cao Renshuang once more.

By now, the assembly had clearly bifurcated. Apart from Cao Renshuang and Ye Haochuan, all others stood behind Ju Yuqu. Thus, to the Fox-Faced Lady, Ye Haochuan and Cao Renshuang were strikingly conspicuous.

"Putting on an act!" The Fox-Faced Lady scoffed, directing her scorn at Ye Haochuan, "Clearly seeking Young Master Ju’s favor, yet feigning indifference to play hard to get?"

This accusation garnered many hostile gazes directed at Ye Haochuan and Cao Renshuang.

"Some individuals are inherently base; they aspire to lowliness and presume others share their nature!" Cao Renshuang retorted with a sneer.

Wow, I hadn't anticipated such a sharp tongue from him; it's on par with mine, he truly has a mastery of sarcasm.

Ye Haochuan mused inwardly with a chuckle.

"What did you just say?" The Fox-Faced Lady trembled with rage, her veins bulging as she ground her teeth.

"What? Being base is one thing, but are your ears malfunctioning as well?" Cao Renshuang laughed brazenly.

"Scoundrel, you’re seeking your own demise!" The Fox-Faced Lady erupted in fury, preparing to lunge at them.

Along with her, several other cultivators who stood behind Ju Yuqu felt insulted by Cao Renshuang’s words and became incensed.

Cao Renshuang’s brow furrowed slightly, yet he showed no sign of fear, drawing his weapon to face them.

"What is transpiring here?" A clear voice emanated from the courtyard entrance.

The voice, though not boisterous, carried a distinct resonance that caused everyone to halt in their tracks, startled.

The source of the voice was Liu Yifei, whom Ye Haochuan had encountered the previous day.

At this moment, Liu Yifei’s countenance was impassive, betraying no trace of emotion. Yet, all present understood that causing a disturbance here would undoubtedly cross her limits.

This senior sister, whose cultivation level remained a mystery, was not someone anyone dared to provoke.

Everyone ceased their actions, and only then did Liu Yifei calmly declare, "Follow me!"

With that, she turned and proceeded to walk away.

There were no explicit threats or warnings about severe punishment for further disturbances. Nevertheless, no one dared to defy her, obediently falling into step behind her.

Throughout the preceding confrontation, Ju Yuqu had kept his eyes shut, remaining motionless, as if entirely disconnected from the unfolding events.

Now, as it was time to depart, he could no longer maintain his pretense. Upon opening his eyes, he cast a glance, intentional or otherwise, towards Ye Haochuan and Cao Renshuang.

That look was laden with disdain and mockery.

Then, he leisurely began to walk, following in Liu Yifei’s footsteps.

The others hesitated to move before him, silently falling in line after Ju Yuqu had taken the lead.

Cao Renshuang and Ye Haochuan, unhurried, brought up the rear.

"You should exercise caution; that group might single you out!" Once the crowd had dispersed, Cao Renshuang advised Ye Haochuan with a grave expression.

Ye Haochuan couldn’t help but chuckle, responding, "The earlier incident had nothing to do with you, yet you stepped in to defend me. Aren’t you concerned about becoming their target?"

"I simply cannot tolerate their overbearing conduct!" Cao Renshuang declared, pouting slightly. "Furthermore, I genuinely dislike Ju Yuqu."

"Oh? Do you harbor some animosity towards Ju Yuqu?" Ye Haochuan inquired with curiosity.

"You overestimate my standing!" Cao Renshuang replied with a wry smile. "With my capabilities, how could I possibly hold a grudge against him? However, my father commanded me to seek Ju Yuqu’s favor, which irritates me immensely. Simply because he mandated it, I refuse to comply!"

"Is that so? Merely because he possesses greater talent, your father values him so highly and desires you to curry favor with him?" Ye Haochuan expressed his confusion.

"Incorrect, incorrect, incorrect!" Cao Renshuang employed his signature phrase. "Ju Yuqu is not merely exceptionally gifted; his background is also extraordinary. While I cannot divulge specifics, I can assure you that aligning yourself with Ju Yuqu guarantees an ascent to the highest echelons."

Whoa, this is remarkable. Is he some kind of royal descendant or a noble of significant standing?

Ye Haochuan was left speechless.

Previously, curiosity had gnawed at him regarding why people were so deferential towards Ju Yuqu, even with his exceptional abilities. After all, every individual present was a Son of Heaven, possessing their own pride and dignity.

It now appears their stance stems partly from personal feelings and partly from directives issued by their families.

“If this is your father’s decree, how will you face them upon returning after acting this way?” Ye Haochuan inquired, a touch of perplexity in his voice.

Cao Renshuang’s lips formed a pout. “I have no interest in flattering others. I’d rather build my family’s strength through my own endeavors. Besides, as you witnessed, even if you had attempted to suck up to him, he would have paid you no mind. Kneeling and calling him father would have yielded the same result, so why should I debase myself?”

Ye Haochuan offered a smile and placed an appreciative hand on Cao Renshuang’s shoulder. “Well said! Relying on others can be undependable; only self-reliance offers true security!”

As they continued their conversation, they had already emerged from the courtyard and were making their way towards the mid-mountain region.

Before long, a vast training ground materialized before their eyes.

Though designated as a training ground, it was, in reality, a formidable Great Formation, and furthermore, a Combined Formation. Ye Haochuan's proficiency in formations was insufficient to discern the specific function of this particular array.

Standing at the periphery of the formation was a slender man, his hands clasped behind his back.

Once all the disciples had taken their positions, he slowly turned. A piercing light emanated from his eyes, capable of captivating one's soul and dispelling any errant thoughts.

“This individual is Ge Ping, the third senior disciple of the fourth generation within Half-Mountain Residence. He holds fairness and justice in the highest regard; it is said that even if the Manor Master were to enact an unjust decree, Ge Ping would openly voice his opposition,” Cao Renshuang confided softly to Ye Haochuan.

Having now encountered four individuals from Half-Mountain Residence, Ye Haochuan found each one remarkably distinct, each a prominent figure in the external world.

Ye Haochuan finally grasped the reason behind Half-Mountain Residence’s formidable influence in Shuanghua County. The caliber of these individuals was truly exceptional.

It stands to reason; with such rare, one-in-a-million talents, how could they possibly be ordinary?

Unbeknownst to himself, Ye Haochuan began to harbor a profound fascination for the inhabitants of Half-Mountain Residence.
