The Zhenbei Group's board of directors, a previously hollow institution, has become restless since Bai Zhenbei's disappearance. Now, under Chairman Perros, they are making a move, seeking to fill the power vacuum left by recent turmoil. Bai Xiaosheng suspects their target is the vice director position, which would grant them access to the group's inner workings.

But in the eyes of those who’ve truly sat in high positions for years, it’s a completely different story.

As the saying goes, the higher you stand, the farther you see; you understand more, you control more, and with one glance you can tell how much real substance there is, how much of it is actually feasible.

Bai Xiaosheng saw things even more clearly than most, because he wasn’t just someone in power; over the past year he had crisscrossed half of the Sixth Business Division, and he’d always dealt directly with the subsidiaries. What kind of planning was genuinely refined, and what kind only looked good on paper but was actually complete rubbish—he could tell at a glance.

While Bai Xiaosheng was going through the plans, Red Lotus was also running feasibility analyses on the side.

Even judged by Red Lotus’s scoring, none of those plans were anywhere near passing.

In the end, the board of directors, the group headquarters management, and even frontline operations were just too disconnected. They were nothing but armchair strategists.

Finally, Bai Xiaosheng opened his eyes and let out a sigh.

Judging from the board’s latest batch of planning proposals, they were still unfit to enter the real power structure. They should just keep on "doing research" and playing among themselves.

Of course, those people definitely wouldn’t see it that way. They would inevitably think what they’d produced was brilliant, and that every day the group failed to adopt it was a huge loss for the company.

This kind of cognitive gap isn’t something you can fix just by talking; there’s no way to persuade them awake with words alone.

Also, the board wanting Morgan’s vice chairman position isn’t something they can just claim with a single sentence.

Just like back when Second Master Bai Zhenbei wasn’t around, they couldn’t just say a word and walk straight in.

The board first has to get the opinion of the group’s actual management faction—namely Bai Xuanyu, the acting chairman of the board—plus at least more than half the votes from the seven vice chairmen, so that the process is legitimate.

That bunch isn’t even sure whether Mr. Bai Zhenbei will step in and block them again this time. But as long as the management faction passes it, they can quickly and smoothly push everything through. By then the rice will already be cooked, and even if Mr. Bai Zhenbei finds out, he’ll have nothing to say.

Thinking of this, Bai Xiaosheng quietly decided that regardless of what others did, he absolutely could not agree.

Otherwise, the group that’s supposed to belong to him in the future could very well be destroyed in the hands of these people.

Just as Bai Xiaosheng made up his mind, his car had already arrived near the group’s headquarters tower.

In his mind he had just flipped through countless reports and was feeling a bit tired. He shifted his gaze to the car window, trying to relax for a moment.

Right then, he suddenly noticed a crowd gathered by the roadside in the distance, like something was happening.

Bai Xiaosheng wasn’t the type who enjoyed watching a commotion, so he didn’t pay much attention at first.

But just as he was about to look away, he suddenly saw, through a gap in the crowd, the woman in the center—none other than his new secretary and assistant, one of the eight, Rachel.

She was also the first person Bai Xiaosheng had given work to arrange, so he had a fairly strong impression of her.

Why was she here, and why was she being surrounded?

Feeling that something was wrong, Bai Xiaosheng immediately said to the driver, "Pull over by the curb."

"Here, Mr. Bai? We can only stay here for a few minutes," the driver said hurriedly.

"It’s fine, I’ll get out. You can drive the car back," Bai Xiaosheng said.

The headquarters tower was only one block away; walking back later wouldn’t be an issue.

"All right then." Seeing that Bai Xiaosheng insisted, the driver turned the steering wheel and pulled the car over to the roadside.

Bai Xiaosheng got out, waved the driver off, and strode toward the crowd.

As he got closer, he saw that the people standing around were all tall and burly, dressed in identical suits, wearing sunglasses, with Bluetooth earpieces in their ears.

Any passerby who tried to edge closer to see what was going on was pushed away.

Judging by the formation, these people were all bodyguards. Who knew which big shot was going out with six or seven guards like this.

"You’re being totally unreasonable!" Rachel’s angry voice came from inside the crowd. "I’ve already apologized, what more do you want?"

Another woman’s voice sounded calm and slow, laced with cold sarcasm. "I’m not satisfied with your attitude. If you don’t make me satisfied today, you’re not leaving."

Just from a couple lines, Bai Xiaosheng couldn’t figure out the situation, so he stepped forward, trying to go in.

"What do you think you’re doing?!" A white bodyguard noticed his intention and barked at him.

The others around him immediately became alert and turned their eyes on Bai Xiaosheng.

"I’m going in," Bai Xiaosheng said calmly.

"Don’t stand here gawking, move along!" the bodyguard who spoke earlier ordered, leaving no room for argument as he reached out to shove Bai Xiaosheng.

Bai Xiaosheng shifted half a step to the side, easily dodging the man’s hand. "The lady inside is my colleague. I’m here to resolve the issue."

The bodyguard grabbed at empty air. Hearing what Bai Xiaosheng said, he froze for a second and glanced back at Rachel inside.

Bai Xiaosheng took advantage of that moment and walked past him unhurriedly, stepping into the circle of people.

Right then, Rachel also saw Bai Xiaosheng. Her eyes lit up with surprise. "Mr. Bai!"

The other woman turned to look at him as well.

She looked a bit older than Lin Weiwei, with blonde hair and blue eyes. Her hair was swept up high, revealing a long snow-white neck like a noble swan.

Everything she wore was bespoke from top-tier designers, dazzlingly luxurious. Just her handbag alone was worth over a million. One look and you could tell she was from a wealthy family.

Of course, someone without status wouldn’t go out flanked by so many bodyguards.

Bai Xiaosheng walked straight to Rachel’s side. Seeing her eyes brimming with tears, looking all aggrieved, he immediately comforted her, "Don’t worry, I’m here."

As he spoke, Bai Xiaosheng took a pack of tissues from his pocket and handed it to her.

The warmth of the gesture made Rachel nod over and over, her gaze filling with a kind of gentle relief.

The woman opposite them was silently sizing Bai Xiaosheng up.

"What happened?" Bai Xiaosheng noticed two toppled shopping bags by the steps nearby, dark brown liquid spilling out of them—it seemed to be coffee.

"Miss Lin asked me to buy coffee for everyone. After I bought it, I was walking back, but their car came in too close and suddenly honked. I got distracted and was startled; in that moment my heel stepped into a pothole, and one of the coffee bags in my hand flew up and splashed onto their car. I didn’t realize the window was down, and my coffee splashed onto that lady’s face... I’ve apologized over and over, but she still refuses to let it go," Rachel said, aggrieved, explaining what had happened.

In fact, it wasn’t entirely her fault, and she’d already apologized sincerely. What more was she supposed to do.

Bai Xiaosheng gave her a reassuring smile and said softly, "I see. Leave it to me."

As he spoke, he turned and looked at the woman.

"Who are you?" The woman fixed him with a cold stare, smiling faintly. "Her boyfriend, or a colleague, or her boss?"

"I’m her boss," Bai Xiaosheng replied mildly. "Madam, on behalf of our employee’s momentary mistake, I sincerely apologize to you. As for any damages, we can compensate. Let’s just put this matter to rest."

The woman’s lips curled into a mocking smile. "The staff quality at Zhenbei Group is indeed impressive. Let me ask you: what level are you? If you’re going to apologize, I need to see whether you’re qualified."

Hearing that, Bai Xiaosheng couldn’t help but feel a jolt.

This woman knew Rachel was from Zhenbei Group...

He glanced at the badge pinned to Rachel’s chest, which bore the company logo and a number—the number represented her position level.

But even with the badge, most outsiders wouldn’t know what it meant. Clearly, this woman was an insider.

She knew Rachel was from Zhenbei Group and still insisted on hounding her—that said a lot on its own.

"This is our..." Rachel, hearing the woman question Bai Xiaosheng’s status, couldn’t take it and started to speak, but Bai Xiaosheng stopped her.

"Madam, I can see you’re someone of considerable status yourself. Why insist on pressing the advantage like this?" Bai Xiaosheng said.

"Today I intend to press the advantage," the woman replied with a faint smile, folding her arms as she looked at him.

"Then I’m afraid we’ll have to call the po-lice," Bai Xiaosheng said with a light smile. "The most our employee has done is offer an apology. But your car hit her, and she should be checked at the hospital. A fright can lead to various mental conditions that are hard to detect. So please come down to the po-lice station to cooperate. We’ll send our lawyers to talk things over with you slowly. I still have work to do, so I won’t be staying with you here."

As he finished, Bai Xiaosheng turned to Rachel and smiled. "Now then, Miss Rachel, your boss is approving your leave. Go handle this matter properly—go to the po-lice station with this lady and have a thorough, unhurried talk."

Since reason couldn’t get through, Bai Xiaosheng went straight to the ultimate move.

The woman and Rachel were both stunned; neither had expected him to resolve it this way.

Rachel immediately caught on and broke into a smile. She looked at the woman and said, "Don’t worry, Mr. Bai, I’ll work with this lady to handle the matter properly!"
