Immortal Mortal Chapter 1227: Round, Setting Sun Above the Winding River
Previously on Immortal Mortal...
The universe continued its collapse. The void was no longer a sanctuary. As Mo Wuji's broken-sun-like halberd light sliced through the air, Quasi-Sage experts were felled.
Their individual worlds were opened, and all their worldly treasures were absorbed into his Mortal World.
Fighting alone, self-defense was a struggle. Now, with numerous allies, the pressure on Mo Wuji eased considerably. He found he could allocate some energy to systematically collect the items from these fallen domains.
In this intense moment, all mercy was cast aside. A swift conclusion to the battle was paramount, enabling him to reunite with Yan'Er. While the arrival of Sage Nun and the others would have permitted Mo Wuji an easy escape, he dared not leave.
These individuals had come to his aid. His departure would leave Tian Hen and his companions overwhelmed. Therefore, to effect Yan'Er's rescue, subjugating his adversaries was the immediate necessity.
Tai Luan found himself matched against Tian Hen, Luo Xu was confronted by Huan Ti, Fo Ti faced Sage Nun, and Qing Yuan was held off by Yuan Zhenyi.
Heng Zuo, superior in power to Tong Ming, found himself in a stalemate as he withheld his full strength. Had Mo Wuji's reinforcements not appeared, Heng Zuo would have unleashed his ultimate power to ensure Mo Wuji's demise. However, with the arrival of allies, all at the Sage level, Heng Zuo wished to avoid an irreparable feud with Mo Wuji.
After all, his involvement was coerced; unlike Luo Xu and his cohort, whose aim was to plot against Mo Wuji and seize his treasures.
Just as Gu Pingren and Gu Yongxiao moved to assist Mo Wuji, they were engulfed by Lei Hongji's overwhelming lightning bolts.
Witnessing the demise of tens of Throned Quasi-Sages under Mo Wuji's Mortal Halberd, Luo was consumed by fury. A thirty-meter-long sword qi erupted from his Sword of Fortune, hurtling towards Mo Wuji.
This Sword of Fortune Qi, though appearing diminished, encapsulated the condensed might of the entire cosmos. Compared to its previous, more expansive form, its killing intent was now far more profound.
This confrontation had been planned. Yet, within his scheme, the assistance of Lei Hongji and Tai Shixiao had not been factored in.
Their aid, theoretically, should have bolstered his chances of victory. Ironically, it resulted in an increased number of combatants aiding Mo Wuji. More critically, Mo Wuji's strength far surpassed Luo's projections.
"Hong!" Mo Wuji’s halberd light fractured, dispersing into countless fragments. However, the potency of Luo’s Sword of Fortune Qi only slightly abated, continuing its rampage with boundless killing intent.
Luo unleashed a mighty roar. Assuming the bearing of a universe's sovereign, Luo’s imposing sword intent descended, aiming to overwhelm Mo Wuji.
Mo Wuji let out a cold snort. Luo was powerful, but not sufficiently so to dominate him.
His Mortal Halberd manifested another surge of light. Simultaneously, Mo Wuji extended a finger, invoking the Seven World Finger technique – Returning Mortal.
Luo recognized the formidable nature of Mo Wuji’s halberd. Any artifact capable of rivaling his Sword of Fortune would undoubtedly be of comparable caliber.
As Mo Wuji's halberd light swept forth, Luo initially assumed it was directed at him. Soon, however, he realized the attack was aimed at Tai Shixiao.
If he could cripple Mo Wuji, Luo cared little for Tai Shixiao's survival.
"Boom!" The seemingly unassuming finger-strike of Returning Mortal collided with Luo’s majestic Sword of Fortune Qi. Magnificent and vast dao ripples exploded outwards, and innumerable dao laws were shattered. In that instant, the already collapsing universe plunged into an accelerated state of decay.
Against the dao laws wielded by Returning Mortal, the Sword of Fortune Qi was relentlessly compressed. From tens of meters, it shrank to several meters, then to mere feet. Ultimately, it was forcefully returned to the Sword of Fortune. It was as if a swimmer emerging from the water had been violently shoved back in by an unseen hand.
Luo's face flushed crimson. His original intent was to employ this supreme Sword of Fortune Qi to subjugate Mo Wuji, thereby establishing his dominance across the entire universe.
Now, his Sword of Fortune Qi had been publicly repelled. His preceding roar and his arrogant demeanor now appeared utterly farcical.
This moment also brought Luo to a stark realization: while his own power had significantly advanced, Mo Wuji remained the stronger combatant. Not only had Mo Wuji repelled his Sword of Fortune Qi, but he had also diverted his attention to confront Tai Shixiao.
Had he not summoned a multitude of Throned Gods to his aid, facing Mo Wuji alone would have been a suicidal endeavor.
The animosity between Tai Shixiao and Mo Wuji was as profound as the abyss. As Luo was vociferously demanding Mo Wuji's demise, Tai Shixiao had already produced a colossal copper seal. Just as he drew the seal forth, Mo Wuji's halberd light descended.
"Ka!" The halberd light collided with the copper seal. The nascent dao laws imprinted upon it shattered, rendering the artifact a mere mundane magic treasure that was violently flung away.
Mo Wuji's halberd radiance, unhindered, pierced through Tai Shixiao's domain and struck his very being.
Tai Shixiao's strength paled in comparison to Lei Hongji's, and at best, he was on par with Tai Luan and the other Sages. Against Mo Wuji, however, Tai Shixiao was demonstrably outmatched, by multiple folds.
Consequently, Tai Shixiao found himself utterly defenseless against Mo Wuji's devastating halberd strike.
The formidable halberd light from Mo Wuji surged forward. A single glance was enough for Tai Shixiao to discern his vast inferiority, and he made immediate efforts to flee. Yet, just as he was about to escape, an equally potent domain ensnared him.
"You betray me!" Tai Shixiao looked towards Luo with profound disbelief. Almost simultaneously with his accusation, the Mortal Halberd's light split him asunder.
Luo swiftly seized a Dao Law of the Universe from Tai Shixiao's remains before vanishing in a flash.
He now possessed a clear grasp of the unfolding situation. Mo Wuji's reinforcements had arrived, and each was no weaker than a Sage. His continued presence here would only ensure his failure to eliminate Mo Wuji. With the Cataclysm upon them and the universe beginning to crumble, Mo Wuji was bound to meet his end eventually.
He resolved instead to merge with this third Dao Law of the Universe and claim the spoils later. He was convinced that by assimilating this final law, he would undoubtedly weather the World-Ending Cataclysm.
Mo Wuji observed Luo's escape, having pilfered battle gains. Nevertheless, he let it pass. He reached out, sundering Tai Shixiao's personal world, and absorbed the remaining treasures into his own Mortal World.
"Boom!" Just as one of Lei Hongji's lightning bolts impacted Gu Pingren, he witnessed Mo Wuji dispatching Tai Shixiao, and Luo making off with a Dao Law of the Universe.
At this juncture, Lei Hongji could no longer afford to contend with Gu Pingren and Gu Yongxiao. He initiated his escape sequence without hesitation.
The moment his escape technique activated, the surrounding expanse began to convulse violently.
"Mo Wuji, you despicable..." Lei Hongji initially attributed the spatial distortion to the universe's collapse. However, he soon realized it was Mo Wuji's doing, the result of countless void runes planted within the area detonating.
Mo Wuji let out a cold laugh. These void runes were originally intended for Luo. Since Luo had fled, they would now be unleashed upon Lei Hongji. As the void runes detonated, Mo Wuji added to the onslaught. His Mortal Halberd conjured a radiant sun, its brilliance descending upon Lei Hongji.
In truth, Lei Hongji harbored little concern. Even with the self-destruction of Mo Wuji's void runes and a subsequent attack, he was confident in his ability to escape.
He raised the Thunder Hammer, channeling boundless lightning-elemental dao laws into it. Simultaneously, all of Lei Hongji's elemental energy and spiritual will seemed to be drawn out.
The Thunder Hammer transformed into a furious bolt of lightning. The very air crackled as if the Lightning Calamity had descended, hurtling towards Mo Wuji.
Thunderous roars echoed through the sky. In this instant, the entire universe appeared to transform into a realm of lightning, with Lei Hongji as its sovereign.
Lightning Sacred Art - Great Art of Thunderclap!
Lei Hongji had navigated countless perils to reach his current standing. He was certain he could overcome this challenge as well. Mo Wuji was undeniably more powerful, but not powerful enough to claim his life.
His Great Art of Thunderclap unleashed rolling waves of lightning. Even a Sage would find themselves facing imminent death or forced to expend their full power for survival. Within this lightning-infused dominion, the very fabric of space pulsed with the Laws of Lightning.
However, Lei Hongji also understood that Mo Wuji was no ordinary Sage. While his Great Art of Thunderclap could annihilate a typical Sage, it would undoubtedly fail to kill Mo Wuji.
He was confident that he would eventually deal with Mo Wuji. There was no urgency to do so now; he could return after transcending the Sage Stage.
Concentrated and terrifying lightning bolts detonated across the sky. Even Luo Xu and his companions, engaged in their own battles, were frozen in shock. Was this the true might of Lei Hongji? If this fearsome power of the Laws of Lightning were to strike them, their only options would be to perish or desperately defend themselves.
For cultivators, sacred arts of the lightning element had consistently been the most terrifying. What could be more dreadful than the ultimate lightning-type sacred art, the Great Art of Thunderclap?
Instantly, excitement flared within Luo Xu and his group. Luo's previous retreat became irrelevant. If this devastating strike could eliminate Mo Wuji, their victory in this battle would be assured.
Before long, astonishment swept over everyone. As the formidable Laws of Lightning from the Great Art of Thunderclap bore down on him, Mo Wuji made no move to defend. Instead, that brilliant white sun continued its unyielding path directly towards Lei Hongji.
The vast desert stretched out, desolate and veiled in haze. Over the meandering river, a solitary, round sun dipped towards the horizon.
