Zhang Yi tests his newly upgraded weapon, the Sword in the Tree II, and unleashes a devastating attack on the frozen Lu River. Meanwhile, Yang Xinxin has deciphered parts of the Scholar's Notes, revealing ancient beliefs about soul power and a mysterious Sacred Spirit Hall, alongside unsettling records of a great transformation and widespread death in the Nash Kingdom.

Zhang Yi finished reading the decoded portion of the Scholar's Notes, and the shock inside him ran deep.

According to the Scholar’s analysis, the time when the Three-Eyed Tribe produced large numbers of martial practitioners, that is, Transcendents, exactly coincided with the arrival of the apocalypse.

Before that time, although there were powerful individuals, they were nowhere near as terrifying as what came later.

Even the Sacred Spirit Hall’s ability to collect the Rite Spirit only activated after the apocalypse.

“The power to harvest souls… the Great Cataclysm… and I saw this name again—Kagayo!”

Zhang Yi pressed his hand to his forehead, feeling his mind in a whirl.

There was too much information obtained in a short time, and he couldn’t make sense of everything.

Moreover, he had to account for the Scholar’s cognitive limits; these were the Scholar’s interpretations, not necessarily historical truth.

Yang Xinxin told Zhang Yi, “But now, we can basically infer two things from the information we have.”

She slowly extended a finger and said earnestly, “First, the Sacred Spirit Hall in Nash Kingdom and the purple pyramid under the Qinling are similar energy-collection devices. The birth of the God Essence or the Rite Spirit was their achievement.”

“So what were they collecting?”

Yang Xinxin lifted her head, as if trying to see through the villa roof to the heavens above.

“The Scholar said that for thousands of years the Sacred Spirit Hall did not operate. It only activated when the apocalypse began two and a half years ago.”

“At that time the largest event on the surface world—the world we live in—was the arrival of the Icebound Apocalypse. Massive human deaths.”

Yang Xinxin looked at Zhang Yi.

“Brother, I have a hypothesis. Want to hear it?”

Zhang Yi rubbed his brow hard. “Go ahead.”

Yang Xinxin said, “Humans themselves possess a certain special energy field. Although its origin is unclear, it undeniably exists.”

“The mass extinction brought by the apocalypse caused 95% of humans on the planet to die, along with countless other lifeforms.”

“That energy was released and lingered in the planet.”

“The surviving humans absorbed that energy and consequently produced vast numbers of mutants.”

“This fits the method by which Transcendents rose.”

She held up her palm and made a grabbing motion.

“Through absorbing the energy of supernatural lifeforms. It’s essentially hunting!”

“Killing them yields their energy. Mass deaths caused by natural disaster would have the same effect.”

“The underground peoples must have known long ago that such a moment would come, so they built devices to collect this unique energy field.”

Yang Xinxin’s reasoning was very logical. Zhang Yi said nothing and only nodded quietly.

Her overall line of thought matched what he had been thinking, but hearing it from someone else made the logic clearer.

Zhang Yi stroked his chin and said, “I once heard that life on this planet went through five mass extinctions. Maybe those underground peoples were the planet’s five generations of humans?”

It was difficult for Zhang Yi to categorize them simply as biological life.

From all appearances, their intelligence rivaled modern humans and in many ways even surpassed them.

Yang Xinxin nodded.

“That possibility certainly exists.”

“To escape the world’s disasters, they gave up the surface and retreated deeper into the planet.”

“If this planet is a house, they abandoned the walls and went inside. They knew that mass extinction would strike again.”

Zhang Yi lowered his head and pondered.

Suddenly, an inexplicable chill washed over him, making cold sweat rise along his spine.

“If we follow this logic, doesn’t that mean that over countless ages, innumerable intelligent civilizations that once ruled the planet failed to overcome some unknown apocalypse?”

He looked down at Yang Xinxin. “One day that fate will come for us too. But…”

He swallowed with difficulty.

“We survived the ice age’s extreme cold and kept the fires of life going.”

Yang Xinxin said calmly, “That means the real crisis has not yet arrived.”

Those words struck Zhang Yi at his core.

He had already suspected the answer but had been reluctant to face it.

Even powerful beings like the Gatekeeper of the Underworld, Bai Longzi, and the Nash royal family had to choose to hide in the underground world.

What kind of terrifying, unknown disaster could force such choices?

“If that’s the case, we must plan ahead! We need to become stronger. And learn from them: build the deepest underground sanctuary!”

Zhang Yi’s first thought went to this.

“Perhaps Freemonts tried to bore through the Earth not for minerals, but to prepare for future disasters.”

Yang Xinxin said softly, “Our data is still insufficient; we can only speculate from what we have.”

“Building an underground city is not simple. You must find an ideal location with rich underground resources and have the technology to at least predict seismic patterns for the next few centuries.”

“Excavating a sufficiently large underground city and making it impregnable could require the combined strength of all humanity to achieve.”

Zhang Yi thought of the two underground realms he had visited.

He had only been to the outskirts of the Bai Longzi community; he had never penetrated deeply.

But Nash Kingdom’s scale was enormous—comparable to dozens of human cities.

Even with humanity’s current high technological level, without a century of effort and all of humanity’s combined resources, it would be impossible to create such a place.

The more he thought, the more difficult the problem seemed.

What troubled him most was that he had no clue what the ultimate destruction might be.

Freezing, volcanic eruption, or tsunami—

Those natural disasters didn’t terrify him most at this point.

That thing would be far worse than any of them.

After weighing everything, his gaze drifted to the ceiling.

“Xinxin, do you think there’s a possibility we could migrate into space?”

He spread his hands. “Like the Moon or Mars! Didn’t humanity already plan for extraterrestrial colonies?”

Yang Xinxin considered for a moment, then said to Zhang Yi very seriously:

“Before the apocalypse, humanity’s space technology couldn’t realistically do that. It’s not a short trip; it’s long-term habitation.”

“But now… there’s some possibility.”

That possibility lay with Transcendents.

Human mutation gave individuals extraordinary intelligence and power, enabling many previously impossible tasks to become feasible.
