Ji Ruyan is interrogated about her husband Chen Tai's crimes. The investigators reveal Chen Tai has been apprehended in Tokyo and that his illicit dealings are exposed. As Ji Ruyan's composure begins to falter, a mysterious figure, Jiang Chen, enters the interrogation room, surprising her.

She also felt she wouldn’t get another chance to ask.

"I don’t know him. But I know his son."

Ji Ruyan’s expression froze, then quickly relaxed.

Jiang Chen rested both arms on the table. "Sister Ji, do you know much about Chen Tai’s family affairs?"

"I’m his wife, Mr. Jiang. Don’t you think it’s a bit strange for you to ask a question like that?"

"At a time like this, Sister Ji isn’t distancing herself, and even dares to admit to being married to Chen Tai. That’s truly touching."

"Can I really distance myself? We’re legally married."

Ji Ruyan laughed, a tragic kind of smile, like a rose withering in the wind.

Jiang Chen shrugged. "A piece of paper doesn’t prove anything. It might not even compare to some unmarried relationships. The fact that Yu Fei has known you for so long and still didn’t know about Chen Tai suggests your marriage wasn’t exactly harmonious."

The first half of the sentence made Ji Ruyan’s gaze tighten sharply, but the latter half made a flicker of doubt appear in her eyes.

She looked at the nonchalant man and asked tightly, "What’s your relationship with Zhou Shaohua?"

"Looks like Sister Ji does know."

Jiang Chen didn’t answer, as if he’d come all this way just to dig up gossip.

"Chen Tai’s son is about the same age as Sister Ji. Why would you marry him? Was it for money? Power? Or did Chen Tai force you?"

"Does it matter?"

"We’re already at this point. What could Sister Ji possibly have left that you’re too embarrassed to say? I promise I’ll keep your secret."

Such a rude, even humiliating question, yet Ji Ruyan couldn’t help but laugh again.

"If I’d met Mr. Jiang earlier, I definitely wouldn’t have been as stupid as Yu Fei. I would’ve gone all out to get Mr. Jiang."

"Sigh."

Jiang Chen sighed. "Missed chances, missed chances."

Ji Ruyan’s smile lingered. She looked up at the surveillance camera hanging in the corner of the ceiling, the standard fixture in places like this.

There really was no point in putting up a last-ditch resistance.

At least they’d let her feel a bit of happiness at the end. She should be content.

"I admit, Chen Tai is a very charming man, especially to an ordinary woman like me. He has money, power, strong social resources. Saying he coerced me—I’d feel hypocritical myself."

"Still sounds like you weren’t entirely willing."

Jiang Chen looked at her with a smile.

Ji Ruyan met his gaze. "He’s so much older than me. No matter how well he maintains himself, his age is still there. And he has a son about my age. If it were you, Mr. Jiang, could you say you were completely wholehearted?"

"Straightforward."

"He and I, we each got what we needed. I used his resources to climb up, but a man like him, how could he be willing to just be a woman’s stepping stone? Ending up where I am today, I don’t blame anyone."

"Got it. Seems rather than calling you and Chen Tai husband and wife, it’s more accurate to say you used each other. Sister Ji needed his capital and background to get started, and he took a liking to your capability and looks..."

Ji Ruyan gave a mocking little smile. "I didn’t expect Mr. Jiang to think I have looks. I’m truly flattered."

"When Chen Tai ran off to Tokyo, did he not tell Sister Ji to run with him? Leaving you behind alone—isn’t that basically sending you to prison?"

At that, Ji Ruyan’s smile vanished and her eyes instantly turned cold.

"In his eyes, I’m just a tool. How could he possibly care whether a tool lives or dies?"

"One last question."

Jiang Chen said, "Does Sister Ji still want to see Chen Tai?"

Ji Ruyan was stunned, then a cold sneer tugged at her lips. "What would I see him for? To wish each other a safe journey?"

Looks like there really wasn’t a shred of marital affection left.

Mm.

If you don’t pull the weeds out by the roots, they’ll grow back when the spring breeze blows.

Clearly, none of this was actually Chen Tai’s damn business. When it all went down, he wasn’t even in Sha City, didn’t even show his face. Yet he ran to Tokyo and still got dragged back. Why?

Precisely for this reason.

And this legal wife of Chen Tai had just been put to the test.

Boss Jiang, who seemed to be doing kindness, nodded and pushed himself up from the table.

"Let’s go."

Ji Ruyan’s eyes showed confusion.

"It’s so late—aren’t you going home?"

Ji Ruyan froze, her lips moved, but she didn’t call him Mr. Jiang this time.

"Are you joking?"

Boss Jiang was very laid-back. "If you’re not leaving, I am."

He really did head out, as casually cool as could be.

Ji Ruyan stared for a moment, then, for some reason, hurriedly stood up and rushed after him. In her haste, she bumped the table with a loud clang.

"Smack."

Ignoring the pain, she grabbed his hand, looked up at that very un-gentlemanly yet somehow all the more attractive back of his head, and wanted to say something.

Jiang Chen stopped first.

His sudden stop caught her off guard; with the momentum, her chest bumped into his arm.

Jiang Chen acted as if he didn’t notice, and looked down at the wrist she was holding.

"Men and women should keep their distance."

Ji Ruyan was stunned yet again, and again, and again.

It wasn’t that a married woman’s self-control was lacking,

it was really Boss Jiang.

So damn hot.
