I Arrived At Wizard World While Cultivating Immortality Chapter 940: Parasite Beasts
When Jie Ming stepped out of the spatial teleport, Viola was already there waiting.
She stood with her arms folded on a stretch of scorched black wasteland, her long silver-grey hair streaming untidily in the wind.
On a low rocky hill not far off, Berta Vera Augusta had come as well, and sat there alone.
Her black hair was tied back in a neat high ponytail, and the sleeves of her robe were rolled to the elbow, baring a length of smoothly drawn forearm.
She saw Jie Ming appear, gave a slight nod by way of greeting, then turned her gaze back into the distance.
“Where is Carl?” Jie Ming looked to Viola.
“Inside, holding up the Plane Origin.” Viola tipped her chin toward a room off to one side, guarded by layer upon layer of arrays. “That bug’s parasites have already eaten through about a fifth of the control over the Plane Origin. Carl has nailed himself down in the core area now, putting everything he has into steadying what is left.”
“It is an awkward situation. That bug’s parasitic ability is stronger than we imagined; the moment he lets up, it could take complete control of the whole plane. So don’t count on him for the fighting to come.”
“What about the other seventh-level wizards?”
“Bad timing. They are all at the most critical stage of their own campaigns.” There was a trace of irritation in Viola’s tone. “Wizard Augusta has burrowed into the insect race’s springboard world; the old man and Teacher Kastilla are drawing in their net over there; and none of the other seventh-level wizards can spare the hands either. So out here it comes down to the three of us.”
Jie Ming nodded, having gained a rough grasp of the situation.
He reached out his senses toward Carl’s aura, and found it quite steady; for the time being there was no great need to worry about him.
“What about the bug itself? Do we have any general intelligence on it?” Jie Ming asked.
“The specifics are not clear, but the guess is that the thing’s main body is very strong.” Viola put away her irritated expression and spoke seriously. “On top of that, because it has parasitised and taken control of too many individuals, its bulk has swelled too far, which has left it slow to act and not fully in command of its own power.”
“What we have to do now is keep cutting down the number of living things it controls. Every batch of parasites we clear away weakens its total strength by that much, and its grip on the Plane Origin weakens accordingly. Once it has been worn down far enough, Carl can turn it around and suppress it, and squeeze it out of the Plane Origin.”
Jie Ming nodded. The plan was crude and simple, but it would certainly work.
He turned his head toward Berta Vera.
Feeling his gaze on her, she rose from the rocky hill and worked her wrists loose, the hem of her black robe snapping in the wind off the wasteland.
“Everyone is here, so let’s go,” she said.
An undisguised will to fight danced in her black eyes.
Viola led the way in front, with Jie Ming and Berta Vera to either side.
The three of them pressed swiftly across the wasteland. The scorched black earth underfoot had been baked brittle, and every step crushed a wide patch of the cracked crust.
The trembling of the ground grew fiercer and fiercer. From far off came howls that rose and fell one after another, mixed with the grating noise of shells rubbing together and jointed limbs rapping at the ground.
Before long, Jie Ming saw the target.
Ahead lay a plain occupied by parasitised strange beasts, the grey-brown ground carpeted with hosts packed densely together.
The strange beasts came in every shape, and besides the beasts there were great numbers of alien races he had seen before, the dinosaur-men and birdmen among them.
Every one of them was hollow-eyed, a faint dark green glow flickering in their pupils.
At the back of every host’s neck a slender worm body bulged out from beneath the skin, squirming ceaselessly with the host’s movements.
“This way of parasitising… it is a good deal cruder than the Holy Spirit race’s.” Jie Ming’s True-False Void-Piercing Pupil swept over the nearest host. “The host is brain-dead, and the body is worked by the parasitic worm in place of its nerves. The worms are themselves part of that bug; once they have taken hold, they become extensions of its power.”
Before he had finished speaking, the horde of parasitised strange beasts on the plain had already spotted them.
Tens of millions of hosts turned their heads at once, hollow eyes fixing on the three of them.
Then the parasitised creatures let out a piercing shriek and came at them from every direction.
The ground shook violently under their running, and the dust they threw up blotted out the sky.
Jie Ming opened the passage to his inner world. A black rift tore itself open in the void, and the Black Giant legion and the dragonblood mushroom-man legion poured out like a black tide.
The vertical mouths in the Black Giants’ chests split wide, loosing a frenzied war cry as they met the onrushing parasite beasts head-on.
The dragonblood mushroom-men formed up in orderly squares, their breath pouring down like a rainstorm.
At the same time Viola summoned her plant-people legion; green vines and branching leaves spread out of the void and strangled the parasite beasts charging at the front.
Berta Vera, as a combat-type wizard with no cannon-fodder legion of her own, went straight over the legions’ battle line; she pushed off with one foot, her figure turning into a streak of flowing light, and drove directly for the rear of the parasite-beast horde.
The target she had fixed on was a dinosaur-man of extraordinary size at the centre of the horde.
The dinosaur-man stood over ten metres tall, covered in scale armour with a metallic sheen, a huge bone blade gripped in one hand, its aura at seventh level or above.
Berta Vera rushed up in front of it and drove out a fist.
The four fundamental forces interwove at the point of her fist. The dinosaur-man commander raised its great blade to block, and the face of the blade crumbled into a sky full of bone fragments the instant they touched.
Boom!!!
The shockwave spread out from the point of impact.
Even across an enormous distance, the tremors from Berta Vera’s battle with the dinosaur-man commander still travelled out in every direction, wave after wave, in the form of elemental surges.
The aftershocks ploughed deep furrows in the ground, and the air was ionised into flickering clouds of plasma.
Jie Ming did not act at once, but watched the battlefield for a few breaths, confirming Viola’s judgement.
The parasitic insect-man, which had scarcely shown itself at all, really could pass its power along through these parasitised individuals: every one of them displayed strength far above the normal level.
But he could also feel that, with so many parasitised and its main body grown so vast, its own will could not fully command them.
It could be foreseen that as the number of parasitised living things dwindled, its nimbleness would increase by a great deal.
“Let’s clear these things away first.” Jie Ming turned to Viola.
Viola nodded.
The two of them exchanged a glance, each chose a direction, and went down into the field together.
Jie Ming dropped into the densest part of the parasite-beast horde. The invisible force field of the Return to Ruins Armor spread open and turned aside every attack that came at him.
Against an enemy like this, Jie Ming had no intention of using any troublesome spells.
He unfolded his alchemy, and his power became countless invisible tendrils that pierced the back of the neck of every parasite beast that came close, stripping the squirming worms out of the hosts’ nervous systems.
The moment a worm left its host it shrivelled rapidly, and the host’s body went limp and collapsed.
The Black Giant legion’s advance quickened abruptly, and the breath of the dragonblood mushroom-men burned the stripped parasite beasts to ashes in swathes.
Viola’s Law of Pain covered another stretch of the field; wherever its ashen white light passed, the parasite beasts curled up and fell one after another, and the worms dropped away of their own accord in their agony.
Before long, the three of them had swept the battlefield clean.
