I Arrived At Wizard World While Cultivating Immortality Chapter 846: The Legion
As time went on, the power of the Incense Fire Divine Dao, anchored on Jie Ming, kept permeating deeper into this plane along the edges of the rift in the plane barrier.
Wherever it passed, it quietly set the power of the Incense Fire Divine Dao into this plane’s deep laws.
Jie Ming could feel the Incense Fire Divine Dao’s coverage steadily expanding.
With every additional stretch covered, his perception of this world grew a degree clearer.
At the same time, the situation on the battlefield was gradually reversing.
Looked down on from high altitude, the dark network that had been expanding steadily outward across the gray land had now stalled.
In its place was a gray-brown tide surging in from every direction.
That was the mushroom-men, in their hundreds of millions.
Woken from dormancy by the food signal their dead kin gave off, they were madly devouring every scrap of organic matter to be found on the battlefield.
Their shells regained their luster rapidly as they fed, and their shriveled tendrils grew full and plump again.
The combat power lost to untold years of dormancy was being made good, converted out of the corpses of their own kind.
You could say the wizards’ slaughter was instead converting a steady stream of combat power for the mushroom-men.
The young wizards’ cannon-fodder legions began falling back step by step.
Several vanguard units that had charged furthest forward, having become detached from the main force because the battle had gone so smoothly earlier, had already been swallowed entirely by the mushroom-men’s gray tide.
The ranged units were pouring out firepower desperately, trying to just hold the line.
But the mushroom-man corpses each volley killed would in turn draw yet more of the woken from further away, forming a vicious cycle that could not be stopped.
The young wizards’ faces had long since faded from their initial arrogance to a uniform pallor.
Several third-level wizards’ attacks had stalled entirely; their cannon-fodder units had lost more than half their number, and they had been forced to contract their formations into passive defense.
Even those few fifth-level wizards had plain anxiety showing on their faces, and kept looking up at the two who still hung above the firmament without giving any instruction at all.
Jie Ming and Augusta, however, were not watching them just now.
Because both of their gazes had fallen on the northwest.
Not long before all the mushroom-men in this region had gone active, deep in a wasteland several thousand kilometers off, a power fluctuation far stronger than any individual on the battlefield had begun slowly waking.
“It seems that is where this region’s mushroom-man leader is.”
Jie Ming drew his gaze back and turned to Augusta. “Those youngsters below look about to break. I will take a legion and probe it; you take overall command and be ready to support at any time.”
“Right!” Augusta nodded.
Jie Ming raised a hand, and the passage to his inner world tore open with a roar behind him, the black giant legion, long since ready, pouring out of the pitch-black passage.
This batch of black giants was not of high average level, holding at around the fifth, with only a few leaders reaching the sixth.
And following close behind the black giant legion came the Tentacle Tree Civilization’s fleet.
A great mass of silver-gray warships filed out of the black passage, the shields across their surfaces glinting with a cold blue light beneath the gray-yellow sky.
Before long, five hundred thousand black giants and over a million Tentacle Tree ships had assembled.
Within his whole legion system, this batch of black giant and Tentacle Tree Civilization forces counted only as a “low-level” formation.
Even so, it was more than enough to deal with the plane before them, whose resources were already extremely scarce.
And as it happened, it would let these raw recruits, who had seen little of the world since their creation, get some practice in!
“Pass down my order… sweep clear every creature in the way and attack the enemy leader’s position directly!”
Glancing at the battle below, Jie Ming gave his order. “Devour on the spot every mushroom-man that has lost its combat capacity; leave nothing for the other side to eat!”
“Nyehahahaha!!! As you command, my lord!”
Hearing the order, several of the sixth-level black giant leaders split open the huge vertical maws in their chests and let out a string of excited, wild laughter.
This lot had been cooped up on the Infernal Sulfur Plane far too long on account of their insufficient level.
Now that their turn had finally come, each was more worked up than the last, wanting nothing more than to charge straight in and slaughter in all directions.
As Jie Ming’s order came down, the cannon-fodder legion he had released followed the leading sixth-level black giants northwest in a dense mass like a swarm of locusts.
On the ground, the young wizards who had been fighting so bitterly stared dumbstruck at this vast host that had appeared out of nowhere.
The mushroom-man host they had barely been able to resist with everything they had was now, before the black giant legion, as fragile as paper.
The black giants did not even bother to slow down; the sixth-level leaders in the front rank merely swung their fists casually as they flew, blasting the mushroom-men in their path away in swaths.
The fifth-level black giants behind them stuffed the mushroom-men that had lost their combat capacity into the vertical maws in their chests as they went.
The instant those obsidian fangs closed, they made a crunch that set the teeth on edge.
Against a black giant’s fangs, the mushroom-men’s hard stone shells amounted to no more than a couple of extra chews.
The Tentacle Tree Civilization’s warships kept up fire support from high altitude, pale blue energy beams pouring down and picking off, batch by batch, the mushroom-men surging endlessly out of the surrounding ground.
The whole legion cut through the gray tide like a red-hot blade into butter, grinding out a perfectly straight corridor by main force.
Jie Ming stood in the high air behind the legion, hands clasped behind him, looking down calmly on it all like a sovereign in command of everything.
Before long the black giant legion had pushed through to the position where that aura had erupted.
This was a cracked wasteland riddled with countless caves and tunnels, the ground dug full of holes by the mushroom-men.
Jie Ming swept the underground with the True-False Void-Piercing Pupil, and his brow furrowed imperceptibly.
The ground below had very nearly been hollowed out by the mushroom-men, forming an enormous underground cavity crisscrossed with passages.
Several sixth-level mushroom-men were slowly waking deep in the cavity, but there was no trace among them of any seventh-level mushroom-man.
Now this… was interesting.
This region had certainly registered a seventh-level energy reaction during the earlier reconnaissance, and yet the few mushroom-man leaders in the region now were only sixth-level.
Jie Ming ran back through the battlefield’s overall situation.
Amid famine the mushroom-men had not turned on one another, but had chosen collective dormancy instead.
Being able to restrain the instinct to devour the corpses of their own kind showed that not every individual in this race had a wholly shattered soul; there must still be a good many mushroom-men retaining intelligence enough.
So then, let us see whether any useful information could be found on the mushroom-men who still retained intelligence.
“Rout the mushroom-man host underground, and bring me every sixth-level mushroom-man hidden down there, along with any that still look to have intelligence left!”
Thinking that, Jie Ming issued his new order.
