I Arrived At Wizard World While Cultivating Immortality Chapter 819: Wizard Savien
Leading the way ahead, Varon played host to Jie Ming with a smile as he went:
“As a matter of fact, a great many people have been hoping you would arrive soon.”
Jie Ming raised an eyebrow slightly. “Oh? Surely not. I should hardly be well known.”
Varon pushed his spectacles up with a chuckle:
“You underestimate your own fame far too much. Lately your papers from the Star Ring Federation, and the Blood Sacrifice Method system, have been discussed rather heatedly across the whole academic circle.”
“Quite a few Mentors have privately laid bets on whether you will produce some astonishing research result this time.”
“There are even several masters of materials science who specifically instructed me to notify them the moment you arrived.”
At that point he smiled at Jie Ming again:
“Of course, rest assured that I did not agree to that last request.”
“Whatever else may be said, you are an important guest of this conference, and it is better not to let people disturb you at will. Besides, you have traveled the whole way here; you ought to rest first.”
Hearing that, Jie Ming had to laugh.
“It seems my reputation is a little larger than I imagined.”
Of course, whether that reputation brought him any benefit was another matter entirely.
At least by how it felt to Jie Ming at present, nothing this reputation had brought him was any good at all.
Before long the two reached the depths of the hall, and Varon gestured invitingly toward a heavily guarded door. “This way.”
Before the door stood a detection machine. Varon first placed his own identity card on it for confirmation, then turned to look at Jie Ming:
“May I trouble my lord to place his invitation here for identity confirmation.”
Jie Ming stepped up with some curiosity. “And this is…?”
“Behind this door is a teleportation array specially prepared by the Academic Exchange Committee, which can teleport you directly to the conference site. As for this identity verification process, it counts as a form of protection for attending wizards; after all, the Academic Exchange Committee has always been committed to the safety and protection of attending wizards,” Varon explained at once.
“Is that so? I see.”
Jie Ming nodded with a smile and again produced the invitation, placing it on the detection instrument.
He did not contradict Varon’s line about being “committed to the protection of attending wizards.”
In fact, although he had been the target of two assassinations along the way, Jie Ming had also clearly felt the Academic Exchange Committee’s protection.
After all, without the Academic Exchange Committee’s restraint, if the other side truly wanted him assassinated it would not have been a matter of a few black wizards.
The one behind it, after all, could call upon a seventh-level fate-type wizard. Had they acted without any scruple at all, Jie Ming was certain he could not possibly have escaped.
But the other side’s two attempts had mobilized only black wizards, and sixth-level black wizards at the very highest.
Indeed, judging by the lack of further pursuit afterward, the other side had not even had that seventh-level fate-type wizard reach across space and move fate during the assassination attempts.
And relying on those black wizards alone… if Jie Ming had previously thought the lowest combat power among sixth-level wizards belonged to those desk-bound sixth-levels who had risen on a mass of resources, then this experience had taught him what it meant for the weak to have someone weaker still beneath them.
Those desk-bound sixth-level wizards who had risen on family resources at least had some resources left in hand to raise their combat power.
Whereas these sixth-level black wizards were, in truth, each poorer than the last.
Although these sixth-level black wizards always appeared in packs, apart from the unlucky ones newly promoted to the sixth level who had not yet had time to develop their Law Solidification Domains, combat power of that level could be handled not merely by Jie Ming but by any proper sixth-level wizard who had risen on his own ability.
And a genius wizard invited to an academic exchange conference could probably have dealt with a situation like that back at the fifth level.
It would be no exaggeration to say that it was precisely because Jie Ming was an “outsider” that anyone had an itchy hand and felt like testing him.
Had Jie Ming been one of the Void Architecture Academy’s or the Anti-Entropy Alliance’s “own people,” there would probably not have been even a so-called test.
Of course, had the academic exchange conference offered no proper protection, Jie Ming would not have come alone either.
Identity verification complete, the two passed through the door into the hall within.
Here, a large cross-plane teleportation array hung quietly at the center of the hall, tens of thousands of spatial runes turning slowly and giving off a soft blue-white radiance.
As the two stepped into the teleportation array, silver-white light rose and space shook lightly.
The next instant, the scene before Jie Ming had changed completely.
What met his eye was a broad and flourishing city.
The sky was a soft color between pale gold and light blue, and a star hung high in the heavens, giving off a warm radiance.
Underfoot was a broad avenue of semi-transparent crystal stone, winding away into the distance, with rolling hills to either side blanketed in great stretches of vegetation.
And the whole city’s buildings were scattered among those wooded hills.
Some were built against the mountainside, towering like palaces; others stood beside streams, like little lodges in the woods.
Every building seemed to have grown naturally out of the mountain itself, wholly of a piece with its surroundings, without the slightest sense of intrusion.
Jie Ming looked around him.
On the spatial teleportation arrays nearby, wizards from different powers were teleporting in without pause.
On a floating platform off to one side not far away, several wizards in the uniforms of different wizard powers were gathered around an enormous light screen, competing fiercely over something.
Several of them worked through a deduction together, and a complex spatial model shifted continuously.
A few others beside them modified parameters at speed, breaking now and then into fresh discussion.
The wizards passing by, however, looked extraordinarily unconcerned, apparently long accustomed to such things.
“That is Wizard Savien, a specialist in spatial knowledge.” Varon glanced at the man at the center of the crowd on the floating platform and explained to Jie Ming with a smile.
“Wizard Savien’s manner of doing things is rather… blunt. He often does this.”
Jie Ming was somewhat surprised to hear it. The spatial law was so useful that wizards all had some understanding of it, more or less.
Given that a great many wizards were skilled in spatial knowledge, for other wizards to address this man respectfully as a specialist meant his level of research into spatial knowledge must be quite extraordinary.
Thinking back carefully, Jie Ming at once recalled that this name appeared in the author column of a great many of the spatial knowledge textbooks he had studied.
“Wizard Savien? I recall studying quite a few textbooks this wizard wrote. I truly… never expected to meet the man himself here.”
Varon smiled. “It is an academic exchange conference, after all. Each time, a few big names are brought in to hold down the keynote addresses.”
Varon’s down-to-earth phrasing made Jie Ming laugh despite himself. “Then it seems this academic exchange conference will include something on spatial knowledge. I am genuinely looking forward to that.”
