I Arrived At Wizard World While Cultivating Immortality Chapter 755: The Battlefield
The octopus-man commander stood before the flagship’s command console, the tendrils around his mouth pulled taut and straight, the color of his face gone from ashen all the way to iron gray. He stared fixedly at the golden figure that had unfolded again on the screen, and finally understood that from beginning to end, the other side had been treating him as a monkey on a stage.
Now the trump card of a plane origin self-destruct had been rendered worthless.
And the enemy was standing dead center in his fleet without a hair out of place.
The octopus-man commander slammed his hand down on the console.
The metal surface let out a harsh, muffled sound, and he had actually driven a crack straight through it.
“Redraw the battle plan!” His voice came hoarse and urgent, as though forced up out of the depths of his throat. “All combat units, hear this: abandon long-range fire suppression. Everyone advance and strangle him at close quarters!”
The order swept through every channel in the fleet.
In the next instant, the hatches of warship after warship opened as one.
Tens of thousands of octopus-man combat personnel swarmed out, like a plague of metal locusts erupting from a nest of steel.
Once clear of the ships, the energy coating on their bodies threw back a hard, cold sheen under the pale violet daylight, and the vents of their armor spat exhaust flame without pause, driving them through high-speed changes of direction as they tightened their formations.
Every combat team held a standard assault formation.
Tens of thousands of sixth-level octopus-men and over a hundred seventh-level octopus-men hurled themselves at Jie Ming’s Dharma Form like an enraged swarm of bees. Jie Ming stood at the very center of the Dharma Form’s chest cavity, taking in every piece of information on the battlefield.
These octopus-men were noticeably more agile in flight than their warships were, their movements linking together more smoothly, and the weapon ports on their armor came live almost in perfect unison. Which meant that warship firepower was not what they were truly best at. Their own civilization’s system had presumably leaned toward individual combat. These warships were most likely ship technology the Multiracial Alliance had supplied them, nothing more than standard-issue equipment.
What they genuinely trusted was still their own armor and their own bodies.
Which also meant that from here on, both sides were finally getting serious.
Jie Ming hesitated no longer. He raised a hand and beckoned, and his inner world abruptly opened.
The next moment, a mass of azure gelatinous flesh came surging out of the rift, like a deep-sea wave suddenly curling over.
That body had by now swollen larger than Jupiter, and the instant it appeared, every detector in the octopus-man fleet burst out with a string of alarms that ran clean off the top of their measuring ranges.
The Nest’s vast body unfurled slowly in the void, ripples spreading layer by layer across its blue gelatinous surface, and then, with a nimbleness entirely at odds with its size, it set itself between Jie Ming and the onrushing octopus-man combat swarm.
At the same time, countless shafts of silver-white teleportation light lit up at Jie Ming’s side.
He had pushed the usefulness of his inner world in plane warfare to its absolute limit.
There was no need for a last-minute redeployment of the legions on the Infernal Sulfur Plane, and no need to build a cross-plane teleportation array in advance.
He had only to teleport his troops into his inner world back on the Infernal Sulfur Plane to wait there, then release them directly at the most opportune moment, and he had a genuine descent of divine soldiers from the heavens.
The Black Giant legion marched out of the teleportation light in ranks.
The instant they appeared, the vertical mouths on their chests opened as one, loosing a low, heavy war cry in overlapping waves, like war hammers coming down one after another in the void.
The ones charging at the very front were all sixth-level Black Giants.
Over these years, Jie Ming had long since rebuilt the Black Giant legion’s equipment system from the ground up.
Every elite Black Giant was issued a Talisman-Rune Artifact capable of casting Return to Ruins Armor and Trigram Fire Annihilation Divine Light.
Production limits meant that each elite Black Giant could only be equipped with a single wizard artifact, but for them that was already enough to lift their combat power onto an entirely new level.
By now the octopus-men’s vanguard had closed to point-blank range.
A seventh-level octopus-man warrior at the head of the charge clasped both hands in front of him, the energy conduits along the arms of his armor flaring a blinding blue at once, and a shockwave of extremely high energy density drove straight at the chest of the nearest sixth-level Black Giant.
A ring of pale golden ripples spread across the liquid metal on that Black Giant’s body as the Return to Ruins Armor’s energy stabilization field unfolded in an instant, absorbing and converting the overwhelming majority of the shockwave’s energy.
The next moment, he raised his right arm.
The Trigram Fire Annihilation Divine Light emitter on his vambrace lit with dark golden light, and a beam compressed to its utmost roared out, punching through the seventh-level octopus-man’s armor shielding in an instant and blowing a hole clean through his right shoulder.
More Black Giants opened fire together.
Hundreds of beams of Trigram Fire Annihilation Divine Light wove a net of dark golden fire above the battlefield, and that net ripped a huge breach straight through the octopus-men’s charging formation.
A heavy warship trying to cut in from the flank in support was run through by more than a dozen beams of Trigram Fire Annihilation Divine Light at once before it had even reached the edge of the battlefield. A chain of explosions tore through its interior, the whole ship broke in half in midair, and it fell toward the depths of the void trailing raging flame. The octopus-man fleet threw up protective force fields in haste.
But at the sixth level, the penetrating power of the Trigram Fire Annihilation Divine Light was already terrifying in the extreme.
The energy barriers of those force fields tore like paper before the beams, and once through, the beams lost none of their momentum and blew on through the engine compartment of an escort ship behind.
In the next instant, fragments of the warship sprayed in every direction, and the fireball of the engine explosion lit up half the battlefield.
And at the front, the Nest had fully unfolded.
Its azure gelatinous body was like a living ocean, extending steadily outward to both sides from the center of the battlefield, as though it meant to wrap the entire sky of the plane inside itself.
Several seventh-level octopus-men tried to swing wide around the Nest and attack Jie Ming directly.
But their attacks landed on the Nest’s gelatinous surface without raising so much as a ripple.
As the Nest continued to swell, it had begun to generate a considerable gravitational field, and those attacks not only failed to do any damage, they were absorbed outright and converted into its own mass.
Against these enemies, the Nest’s defense was very nearly unanswerable.
The one pity was that its own destructive power really was not strong enough.
When it had first been designed, it was a unit specialized in defense and survival.
It could absorb any attack and stand before an enemy like a wall that could not be broken through, but for actively destroying them, the final damage still had to come from the Black Giant legion.
For a time, the front of the battlefield settled into a brief stalemate.
The Nest could not move them, and they could not move the Nest.
The azure gelatinous ocean sawed back and forth in the void, the battle line shuddering continuously in the deadlock.
At that moment, several utterly terrifying auras erupted at once from the deepest part of the fleet.
Seeing the battle turn sharply against them, the eighth-level octopus-men who had stayed hidden all this time could sit still no longer.
Eight eighth-level octopus-men, the commander among them, burst out from different directions at the same time, their armor scraping fierce white light from the air as they flew, locking onto the position of Jie Ming’s true body and launching their converging assault without hesitation.
But in that very instant, a layer of gray-white light bloomed abruptly in front of them.
At some point Viola had come to stand in front of Jie Ming.
Her long silver-gray hair whipped in the energy turbulence stirred up by the Law Solidification Domain, her eyes narrowed slightly, that habitual smile still hanging at the corner of her mouth.
Only this time, what showed through that smile was danger.
“Oh my. How about you play with me for a while?” Viola tapped a finger against the corner of her mouth, the presence around her climbing higher layer by layer.
The eighth-level octopus-men stopped almost as one.
In perfect unison they killed their momentum in midair, as though something invisible had seized their nerves in an instant.
The gray-white light of the Pain Law flowed around Viola.
That light was not glaring. It could even be called quiet.
But when it fell on the octopus-men, every muscle inside them sounded an instinctive alarm, as though one more step forward would drop them into some abyss they could not endure.
One sixth-level being, standing in the way of eight eighth-level beings.
Above the battlefield, the scene froze for one uncanny instant.
