I Am Unaware That I Am the Peerless Martial God Chapter 1353: Shrouded in Mystery
Previously on I Am Unaware That I Am the Peerless Martial God...
Xu Rong remembered that slothful fellow with striking clarity. He was none other than Wu Tao, the man she'd encountered on several occasions. She could identify his exasperatingly idle attitude even if he were burned to cinders!
Still, once she clearly identified the silhouette from the back, disbelief gripped her tightly.
Regardless.
She couldn't link this idler of unclear background to the shadowy force responsible for the recent horrifying family wipeouts. She flat-out rejected the notion—could this fellow truly be that horrifying?
But the sight her eyes captured painted another picture.
In spite of her intense skepticism, this was the undeniable fact!
Shock and hesitation danced in her gaze for several seconds. Without pausing to dwell further, Xu Rong dashed after him right away!
The astonishing revelation surpassed all her guesses by far. Ignoring all risks, Xu Rong chased after him without pause.
Oddly though.
Even as the indolent shape seemed to amble leisurely, he slipped away into the darkness like mist dissolving. When she reached the spot he'd occupied, the area stood utterly deserted.Xu Rong couldn't suppress a spark of uncertainty, whispering to herself in confusion.
"Am I seeing things?"
Right as she doubted her own senses, her squad mates arrived, out of breath, and inquired anxiously.
"Captain, where's the suspect!?"
"Did he get away?"
At their comments, Xu Rong snapped her head up sharply.
"You guys spotted him as well?!"
The squad mates bobbed their heads vigorously, replying together!
"Yes, we did!"
"Absolutely! A shadow was there for sure moments ago. We only spotted him because we watched you pursue him, Captain. He has to be the culprit in those latest brutal cases!"
"What's going on? Couldn't you nab him, Captain?"
Amid their flood of inquiries, Xu Rong's spirits plummeted.
As she'd suspected.
The whole group had glimpsed that form; it wasn't her imagination at all!
The real face of that fearsome power belonged to Wu Tao, the irritating guy she'd dismissed time and again!
With her doubts verified, Xu Rong tensed up abruptly. She increasingly sensed that Wu Tao was genuinely alarming. Concealing his nature so thoroughly rendered him strangely enigmatic, sparking an unfamiliar fear within her.
The idea that Li Weiwei was still watching him made worry flare in her eyes. She hurriedly fished out her phone and rang her up.
To her astonishment.
Li Weiwei's steady tone emerged from the speaker, as if everything was normal, rendering Xu Rong's concerns pointless.
"Captain, what's up?"
Upon hearing her, Xu Rong eased a bit, only to sink into greater bewilderment.
"Nothing major..."
"Have you seen Wu Tao exit his home?"
A tired yawn drifted over from the connection, showing her weariness.
"Yawn..."
"Nope. I've been monitoring his spot right inside the housing area. The entrance hasn't stirred at all. He's barricaded in there like a turtle hiding away; watching it nearly lulls me to slumber."
He stayed put?
How could that happen...
If he never stepped out, then who was the individual she had just witnessed?
Was her brain deceiving her, or had Li Weiwei been tricked?
Doubt clouded Xu Rong's thoughts, so she demanded reassurance swiftly.
"Are you dead sure he didn't go anywhere? Could he have dodged you and escaped?"
As soon as her words ended, Li Weiwei's reply sharpened with assurance!
"No chance!"
"I've put my credibility on the line for this job. I even packed a thermal imaging infrared scope. Every action of his falls under my watch, so he can't deceive me!"
"Captain, don't worry. I'll monitor this fellow extremely thoroughly!"
Xu Rong's confusion deepened, her thoughts twisting into knots.
She knew Li Weiwei's skills well; errors were out of the question for her. Tracking one individual was effortless for her. With her assurance, Wu Tao surely remained indoors.
After all, beyond sight alone, Li Weiwei used advanced devices.
Yet if Wu Tao stayed in, who exactly had she and her squad just observed?
For an instant.
Xu Rong drowned in bewilderment, completely lost in the puzzle.
At that point.
A panicked shout burst from the phone!
"Captain! Captain!"
"That fellow just emerged!"
"He just left his place and headed to the noodle joint in the complex!"
Whoosh!
Xu Rong's eyes bulged wide at the news, her expression etched with utter incredulity!
Wu Tao had been in the housing area the whole time.
But the group had unmistakably seen a male outline earlier—how to account for that?
Might her strong bias against the man, mixed with her lately heightened nerves, have led her to confuse another with him?
Xu Rong's thoughts churned wildly. She responded solemnly.
"Watch him carefully. I'll return soon!"
She needed a direct confrontation. The mystery of these odd happenings demanded answers. Ignoring her puzzled team, Xu Rong sped back to Pingjiang City full throttle.
Within under two hours.
The resolute and striking captain reached the aged housing block.
She approached the building by herself.
After a string of urgent raps, the nine sturdy barriers creaked open gradually.
She at last beheld the target, Wu Tao.
He sported his typical languid vibe—flip-flops, shorts, and tousled hair like a nest. That habitual disheveled look, which once made her more exasperated the longer she gazed, now had Xu Rong fixating, examining him for a solid thirty seconds.
Wu Tao, though, displayed total serenity. Firm and unshaken, he questioned.
"Why knock at my door so late? If there's no cause, I'm heading back to bed."
His poise and words were remarkably serene, as though he truly was clueless. Linking him to the dread force that wiped out the Phantom Spirits seemed utterly implausible.
For anyone else, they'd probably chalk it up to a huge mix-up.
Still.
Xu Rong had endured numerous dangers. Her perceptiveness and gut instincts stood out sharply. Denying Wu Tao further speech, she dove in directly, her stare frosty as she grilled him.
"The one who destroyed the Phantom Spirits this evening—was that you!?"
Wu Tao stayed utterly composed. As a cautious planner, he'd foreseen every twist long ago, ready with over a hundred contingencies.
His practiced denials spilled out smoothly, seeming wholly genuine.
"What's Phantom Spirits?"
"What are you even saying?"
"I was exercising indoors and about to crash. Why face crazy talk from you? If that's it, I'm closing up."
His initial trio of retorts not just cleared doubts and showed pure blamelessness, but also swiftly set up his whereabouts. His performance was flawless, Oscar-caliber without effort.
Still.
Xu Rong wasn't easily swayed.
Her earlier fierce questioning would rattle even Li Weiwei, but this man handled it with flawless ease. His calm bordered on the uncanny.
Something was surely amiss!
Whatever ruse he employed to dupe them and create a false story, he couldn't erase her distrust!
Xu Rong advanced a pace, her tone icing over as determination blazed in her gaze!
"It was you!"
"Drop the pretense. The one by the Qing River tonight was you without doubt. I'd never confuse you with another!"
Facing the stern woman's unyielding scrutiny.
Wu Tao held firm without a waver. Contingency Plan Two kicked in quietly, his lines poised and ready.
Precisely then!
Abruptly, vivid, rainbow-hued glows ignited beyond the threshold. The surfaces of walls and ground twisted and bent, while the whole floor appeared to convulse and lose its hue like flowing muck, swiftly consumed by the advancing shadows!
The display was profoundly chilling, eclipsing the bleakest bad dreams!
No fright flick could evoke such raw horror. The dread of the unfamiliar surged through the hallway instantly, chilling her frame like a sharp winter blast!
For all her skill and prodigious talent, Xu Rong remained merely a normal human female. Such a spectacle was beyond her experience!
In a flash.
The gorgeous captain paled to ashen, staggering back instinctively, glancing about as shivers wracked her form!
