"Bella!" Winter rushed into the room and caught her before she could fall. Her arms wrapped around Bella’s shoulders, steadying her. Her grip was firm but gentle.
Bella blinked several times before looking up. Her eyes were wide, unfocused, still clouded with sleep and fear.
"...Winter?" Recognition slowly appeared in her eyes. The panic in her expression began to fade, replaced by confusion.
Winter gave a small nod, gently supporting her weight. "Easy. You’ve been asleep for a long time." She carefully helped Bella back onto the bed. "Lie down for a while. You need to rest."
Bella obediently sat back, but her fingers nervously clutched the blanket. Her knuckles were white. She looked around again, her eyes searching every corner of the room.
"...Where’s Leo?" Her voice was filled with anxiety. "And Jay... And Jace..." Her voice cracked. "Where are they?"
Winter smiled reassuringly and gently tucked a loose strand of Bella’s hair behind her ear. Her touch was soft, motherly.
"Don’t worry. They’re all here. They’re just in your husband’s room next door. They’ve been discussing something. They’ll come the moment they know you’re awake."
Bella quietly listened. The words slowly sank in. The tension in her shoulders eased slightly. She nodded softly, her voice barely above a whisper.
"...Okay."
She looked down at her hands, still clutching the blanket. Her breathing slowly steadied.
Winter sat beside her on the bed, her presence calm and grounding. "Do you want me to go get them?"
Bella hesitated for a moment. Then she shook her head.
"No... I’ll wait. I don’t want to bother them."
Winter spoke expressionlessly. "You’re not a bother, Bella. You never could be."
Bella looked up at her, her eyes glistening. A small, grateful smile appeared on her face.
"Thank you, Winter."
Winter squeezed her hand gently. "Anytime."
A few minutes later...
The door to Bella’s hospital room opened quietly.
Miss J walked inside. She was wearing a simple yet elegant cream-colored dress that gave her a gentle and graceful appearance. Her long hair rested neatly over her shoulders and in one hand she carried a soft pink handbag that matched her warm smile.
Winter looked up and gave her a small nod. "Good morning."
Miss J smiled before her eyes naturally found Bella. Her expression softened instantly, filled with a mixture of love and tenderness.
"...Bella."
Bella turned toward the familiar voice. Her eyes widened slightly.
"...Miss J?"
A warm smile immediately bloomed across Miss J’s face. "You still recognize me." There was unmistakable relief in her voice, as if she had been holding her breath, waiting for this moment.
Bella blinked innocently. "Of course I do."
Miss J walked closer, her steps light and careful. "I brought you breakfast." She lifted the pink bag slightly. "I made it myself."
Bella stared at her in surprise. "...You made it yourself?"
Miss J chuckled softly. "Yes. I woke up early this morning. I wasn’t sure what you felt like eating, so I made a few simple things." She gently placed the pink bag on the low table near the couch. "Come. You’re being discharged today, aren’t you?"
Bella quietly nodded before walking over to the couch. Her movements were still a little slow and a little careful.
Miss J waited until she was comfortably seated. Then she looked toward Winter. "Winter... Please join us."
Winter nodded politely. "Thank you." She sat beside Bella.
Miss J carefully opened her pink bag before taking out several adorable lunch boxes, each one neatly packed. They were all different shapes and sizes, each one clearly chosen with care.
Bella watched curiously.
The first box held neatly prepared healthy sandwiches, cut into small triangles. The bread was soft, the fillings fresh and colorful. The second contained colorful slices of fresh fruit, such as a strawberries, kiwi, apples, oranges and neatly arranged melon. Another small container was filled with grapes. Finally, she took out a chilled bottle of freshly squeezed grape juice.
Everything had been prepared with obvious care.
Bella couldn’t help blinking in surprise. "So much..."
Miss J smiled gently. "I didn’t know what you’d like. So I made a little of everything. You don’t have to finish it. Just eat whatever you feel like."
Bella quietly looked at the food spread across the table. Every piece had been arranged beautifully. Almost as though the person making it had poured their heart into it.
Without realizing why, a gentle warmth spread through her chest. She looked back at Miss J and smiled sweetly.
"...Thank you."
Those two simple words made Miss J’s eyes soften. "It was nothing." She replied quietly. "For you... I was happy to make it."
Then she opened one of the lunch boxes and handed Bella a sandwich with a warm smile. "Now... Let’s have breakfast before it gets cold."
Bella accepted the sandwich and took a small bite. Her eyes widened slightly. "...It’s delicious."
Miss J’s smile widened. "I’m glad you like it."
Winter reached for a slice of melon. "You made all of this yourself?"
Miss J nodded. "Yes. I enjoy cooking. It’s calming. And I wanted to do something nice for Bella."
Bella looked down at the sandwich in her hands. "It’s really good," she said softly. "You’re a wonderful cook."
Miss J’s heart swelled. "Thank you, sweet girl."
Bella felt...bit wierd, because miss j was looking at her lovingly.
Suddenly, the door swung open with a dramatic bang.
"Bella Bell!"
Jay’s cheerful voice echoed through the room like a trumpet announcing a royal arrival. "Look! I brought you breakfa—"
He stopped mid-sentence. His eyes slowly landed on the low table. Sandwiches, fresh fruit, grape juice, and Bella... Happily eating.
The smile on Jay’s face froze.
He looked at the breakfast spread before him. Then at the tray in his own hands. Then back at Bella. Then back at the table.
"..."
"...I came all this way for nothing?"
Bella blinked innocently while holding her sandwich. "...Jay?"
Jay looked utterly heartbroken, his face the picture of betrayal. "I woke up early... I stood in line at the hospital cafeteria... I even argued with the chef because he forgot your strawberry jam... And this..." He dramatically pointed at the table. "...This betrayal is what I get?"
Bella quickly swallowed her bite. "I-I didn’t know you were bringing breakfast..."
Jay clutched his chest as if he had been stabbed. "Exactly! You didn’t know! Neither did I!"
He slowly turned toward Leo, his voice filled with exaggerated despair. "Bro... my sister-in-law has abandoned me."
Leo glanced at the table before looking at Jay with his usual calm expression. "You came too late."
Jay’s shoulders slumped. "Even you... You’ve changed. You used to be on my side."
