The First Madam recounts the events in the stone chamber to Beitang Yao, claiming Xia Qingqian killed Madam Rong and attacked her. Beitang Yao struggles to reconcile his mother's story with his understanding of Xia Qingqian's character. He questions why Xia Qingqian would harm those who helped her deliver her babies.

Beitang Yao let out a soft sigh. "Mommy, I believe Qian Qian isn’t that kind of person. She wouldn’t be someone who repays kindness with malice. You helped deliver her babies, you did her a favor—she’s grateful to you, she can’t even thank you enough. How could she possibly do something to hurt you?"

"Yao, are you really doubting your mommy because of an outsider?" The First Madam stared blankly at Beitang Yao, frowning and shaking her head as she asked.

"Mommy, she’s not an outsider. She’s my wife, she’s Zi Jian and the others’ mommy." Beitang Yao reached out and wrapped his hands around the First Madam’s shoulders. "Mommy, I hope you can accept her. She absolutely isn’t the kind of girl you say she is. I stake my character on it."

"Yao, Mommy really never thought you’d be so bewitched by her, so completely under her spell that you’d even start doubting your own mommy’s words?" The First Madam pushed Beitang Yao away, walked over to the floor?to?ceiling window, her tone a mix of sorrow and helplessness.

Beitang Yao stepped forward and said quietly, "Mommy, that’s not what I mean. You must not know this—she’s been by my side for over three months now. I know exactly how many roads she’s walked with me. And following me, she’s truly suffered a lot. I don’t want her to go through any more hardship. Mommy, please believe me, Qian Qian is definitely a good girl. She’s not that despicable. Just like you said, she hurt someone because she was defending herself."

"Then what about the injuries on me? Are those ’self?defense’ too? This was premeditated murder—she wanted to kill me to silence me." The First Madam said faintly, "Fortunately my fortune is great and my life is tough, or I would have ended up just like your Aunt Rong. Ah, I really don’t dare think back on what happened then, I really don’t! It was far too terrifying!"

All of a sudden the First Madam went hysterical, clutching her head in both hands, half?squatting as she muttered something under her breath over and over.

Seeing her like that, Beitang Yao couldn’t bear it. He coaxed her softly, "Mommy, it’s all my fault. I shouldn’t have asked you about these things. You’re injured—you should rest. I’ll handle this matter."

After he finished speaking, Beitang Yao called in the servant who was taking care of the First Madam to attend to her and help her rest.

As for Beitang Yao, his face clouded with heavy thoughts. He went back to his room, brooding over how to resolve this.

"Miss Qing Qian, Zi Jin is crying. Is she hungry?" Sister Huan picked up the wailing Zi Jin and walked over to Xia Qingqian, who was standing by the window in a daze.

Xia Qingqian came back to herself and took the still?crying Zi Jin from Sister Huan’s arms. Seeing Zi Jin crying so hard her little nose had turned red, her heart ached.

"I just fed her not long ago. How could she be hungry again?" Xia Qingqian sat down at the bedside, lifted her clothes, and let Zi Jin latch onto her nipple.

The moment this child Zi Jin latched onto mommy’s nipple, her crying stopped. After a few soft "ah?woo, ah?woo" sounds, she narrowed her eyes and began nursing peacefully.

Watching Zi Jin’s sleeping face, Xia Qingqian felt a wave of melancholy ripple through her heart.

"Hey, Miss Qing Qian, are you still thinking about all that?" Sister Huan walked closer to Xia Qingqian and asked in a low voice.

Xia Qingqian lifted her head, her eyes a little vacant, tinged with a trace of sadness. She sighed lightly and asked, "Sister Huan, things aren’t the way everyone thinks they are. I don’t even know what exactly happened back then. I went over as soon as I got Madam Rong’s text message. When I reached the stone chamber, I saw Madam Rong lying on the ground, covered in blood. She kept calling my name, kept calling my name. I don’t know why Madam Rong kept calling for me. Even when you came, the only name Madam Rong could manage to say was mine."
