Xia Qingqian and Beitang Huan attend a family gathering hosted by Beitang Yao's grandfather. While Xia Qingqian tries to navigate the uncomfortable scrutiny and questions from Beitang Yao's relatives, she senses a familiar gaze from across the table. Despite her nervousness, she introduces herself to everyone, though one of Beitang Yao's aunts inwardly criticizes her perceived rudeness.

Xia Qingqian’s face flushed scarlet, and a chill rose faintly in her heart. If she’d known it would be like this, she wouldn’t have come. It was all her meddling that had led to this situation.

Xia Qingqian also wanted to answer her, but how was she supposed to respond?

"Stop asking this and that nonstop. What happens between Qian Qian and Brother Yao has nothing to do with you. Qian Qian is Brother Yao’s woman—does that explanation work for you?" Seeing the atmosphere turn wrong and everyone staring at Xia Qingqian with unfriendly eyes, Beitang Huan spoke up.

As Xia Qingqian’s temporary guardian, she had every reason to help Brother Yao protect Xia Qingqian from being hurt by anyone.

"All right, all right, now that everyone’s here, let’s start eating." Once the old man spoke, the clattering around the table lessened noticeably.

By the end of the meal, no one had eaten with much joy. Maybe it was because an outsider had suddenly appeared at the table.

After the meal, the old man asked Xia Qingqian to stay and told the others to head back.

Supported by the butler, the old man went into the study. Xia Qingqian followed behind, while Ye Feng kept Beitang Huan company in the first-floor living room, waiting for Xia Qingqian to come down.

They had no idea why Grandpa would call Xia Qingqian to the study alone; there was no way it was for no reason. Grandpa definitely had something to say, which was why he’d kept Xia Qingqian back.

In the study, after the old man sat down in the big leather chair, he waved his hand and had the butler leave first.

In the room, only Xia Qingqian and the old man were left.

Xia Qingqian walked over and asked softly, "Grandpa, what did you want to see me about?"

The old man looked quietly at Xia Qingqian, a smile at the corner of his mouth. Then he took a box out of the drawer, set it on the desk, and motioned for Xia Qingqian to open it.

Xia Qingqian lowered her head to look at the brocade box in front of her. Just from its craftsmanship, she could tell it held something valuable. Under the old man’s gaze, she still opened it; inside was a pair of dragon-phoenix bracelets.

Her hand trembled slightly. She looked at the old man in confusion and asked, "Grandpa, this is...?"

The dragon-phoenix bracelets were exquisitely crafted and beautiful, but what exactly was Grandpa doing?

"Hehe, Qian Qian, you’re the first girl Yao has ever brought home. I can also see how he feels about you. This is something passed down in our Beitang Family—only the legitimate granddaughter-in-law receives it. You’re the girl Yao likes, so of course Grandpa has to give you a meeting gift." The old man smiled, taking in Xia Qingqian’s expression. "The Beitang Family may be a prestigious clan, and I may be old, but I’m no fossil. Nowadays, love is free. If you and Yao truly love each other, then I have no objection to you being together."

The old man’s words were far beyond anything Xia Qingqian had imagined. Why would he say such things to her?

"You probably don’t know this: ever since Yao left the castle ten years ago, this is the first time he’s come back. When we got the news, we all went out of the castle to welcome him. Everyone said he’d come back because of a woman." The old man picked up his teacup, took a sip, and calmly watched Xia Qingqian.

Her body jolted. She had heard about it—had Yao really returned to the castle because of her?

"This gift is too valuable, and besides, Young Master Yao wouldn’t want me to accept it. Thank you for your kindness, Grandpa." Xia Qingqian pushed the brocade box back and smiled at the old man.

The old man paused for a moment, then chuckled cheerfully and said, "Child, you don’t know this: before Yao left, he personally gave me his word that you are the only woman he will have in this lifetime. On this matter, he would never lie to an old man like me. And I’ve already said, even though I’m old, as long as Yao can be happy, I’ll agree no matter who the other person is."
