Qiao Weiyang nodded. “Yeah.”
Together, they climbed into the car.
All at once, Qiao Weiyang's brow furrowed.
Sensing her emotional shift sharply, Su Zhuoqian eased off the accelerator.
“Head back to the hospital—turn around,” Qiao Weiyang murmured softly.
She drew in a deep breath, her voice clearly subdued.
“Got it.” Su Zhuoqian swiftly U-turned and drove back to the hospital.
Her due date was still a few days off, yet it looked like Qiao Weiyang was going into labor ahead of schedule.
Gripping the steering wheel tightly, Su Zhuoqian extended his hand to clasp Qiao Weiyang’s.
Her fingertips felt icy. With a lengthy inhale, she steadied herself.
The vehicle wobbled noticeably. As soon as it halted, sweat slicked Su Zhuoqian’s palms.
Su Zhuoqian scooped up Qiao Weiyang and dialed his phone.
“Get the operating room set up and have the doctors on standby.”
Song Hanzhi understood perfectly. “Head straight here. Everything’s prepared.”
The instant they arrived, Song Hanzhi and the nurse wheeled over the gurney.
Qiao Weiyang was gently laid onto it, while Su Zhuoqian’s fingers shook visibly.
Over the past months of prenatal classes, half focused on mental preparation. Yet now, in this pivotal instant, his nerves refused to settle.
“Hubby, remember what you learned in those classes,” Qiao Weiyang urged him steadily.
Still, her discomfort was plain—her complexion ashen, forehead beaded with perspiration.
Su Zhuoqian willed himself to relax as the gurney rolled up to the operating room entrance.
“That’s far enough, President Su.” Song Hanzhi held him back.
Qiao Weiyang offered a faint smile, too drained to speak further.
Left with no choice, Su Zhuoqian waited outside the operating theater.
Just ten minutes passed before family and close friends rushed to the hospital.
Xinyue and Lu Mingjue murmured quietly to each other, while Han Qingwan clasped her hands in fervent prayer.
Su Zhuoqian alone remained rooted to the spot, unmoving.
After what felt like an eternity, the operating theater light flickered on, accompanied by sounds from within.
Lu Mingjue and Xinyue dashed forward first.
Su Zhuoqian lagged behind.
For a brief moment, he stood frozen, then approached the operating theater door like awakening from a trance.
The delivering doctor, well aware of Su Zhuoqian’s temperament, quickly assured, “Mrs. Su came through splendidly. She’s perfectly fine.”
Upon hearing those words, Su Zhuoqian knelt down and grasped Qiao Weiyang’s hand.
She appeared utterly spent—hair drenched in sweat, lips marked from biting down hard. Her ordeal had been far worse than he’d envisioned.
Qiao Weiyang squeezed his hand in return.
In one fluid motion, Su Zhuoqian lifted her into his arms. “Off to the ward we go.”
“Hey, Boss, what about your baby?” Lu Mingjue called out from behind.
Su Zhuoqian ignored him completely.
“Seriously, you don’t want the kid?” Lu Mingjue shrugged, pivoting to scoop up the newborn. The elders had passed the baby around already; now it was his go.
Inside the ward, Su Zhuoqian promptly made Qiao Weiyang comfortable.
Color swiftly returned to Qiao Weiyang’s cheeks. Having learned in the theater that the baby was robust and healthy, her worries had vanished.
The little one was apparently still circulating among the elders’ arms. She simply savored Su Zhuoqian’s attentive presence in silence.
True to form, another half hour ticked by before anyone brought the baby in.
“Brother, care to hold your baby?” Xinyue approached rigidly, cradling the infant with utmost care.
Lu Mingjue jumped in first. “Another nephew for me—ecstatic!”
At the mention of ‘nephew,’ Su Zhuoqian yanked back his extended arms.
‘A boy, then?’
He’d always dreamed of raising a daughter just like Qiao Weiyang, watching her blossom. Was that dream destined to fade?
Qiao Weiyang grinned silently, saying nothing.
“Brother, you sure you don’t want to hold the baby?” Xinyue pressed.
“With all these folks around, do I have to?”
“Mind if I take the baby then?” Xinyue probed further.
Su Zhuoqian appeared indifferent.
“Come on, little one. Looks like Brother prefers sons to daughters—he won’t even hold his tiny niece.” Xinyue sighed dramatically en route to the door.
Abruptly, Su Zhuoqian rose and barred her path.
Xinyue beamed. “You told me to take her. Having second thoughts?”
“Hand her over.” Su Zhuoqian outstretched his arms.
Xinyue relented and passed the baby to him.
Han Qingwan chuckled. “Enough teasing your brother, you two. He finally has his daughter, and here you are bursting his bubble.”
Catching Su Zhuoqian’s icy stare, Xinyue and Lu Mingjue ducked behind Han Qingwan.
His eyes shifted from them to the bundle in his grasp, softening progressively.
“She looks just like you.” Finishing his inspection of the baby, he turned to Qiao Weiyang.
“The spitting image of Weiyang.” Lin Shuhui beamed with uncontainable joy. “That’s exactly how Weiyang was as a baby. Oh, and have you picked a name yet?”
Qiao Weiyang hadn’t given it any thought.
Su Zhuoqian lifted the baby promptly. “Muyang.”
“Su Muyang?” Lin Shuhui pursed her lips in a knowing smile.
The young ones were utterly stunned.
Suddenly, the baby in Su Zhuoqian’s hold burst into cries.
“Feeling chilly?”
“Is it hunger?”
“Doctor time?”
The elders’ hearts raced wildly. Every one yearned to whisk the child away.
Lu Mingjue herded the crowd out. “Okay, okay. Everyone out now. Boss has this.”
His way of making amends to Su Zhuoqian was emptying the room.
Qiao Weiyang fretted too. Though versed in theory, she’d never tended to Jingyun or Xiao Bao. Proximity only heightened her uncertainty.
Noticing Qiao Weiyang’s anxiety, he declared at once, “Probably the diaper. I’ll handle the change.”
Months of lessons crystallized into practical know-how. He laid the baby in the bassinet and deftly swapped the diaper.
Soft light bathed him, tracing his tender silhouette against the starry night beyond the glass.
This moment healed Qiao Weiyang’s lingering past heartaches.
Having him by her side was truly wonderful.
