Handsome CEO's Darling Wife Chapter 1: CROSSROAD
Bang! Bang!!
The deafening sounds of gunfire ripped through the hushed atmosphere of Milan, Italy. Against the backdrop of chaos, four individuals were in a desperate flight. The man, burdened with his wife, was closely followed by a young girl who carried his child.
The infant's cries pierced the night, inadvertently revealing their position to their pursuers. The young girl, struggling under the child's weight and the exertion of running, quickly covered its mouth. Gasping for breath, she found the task of carrying the child and maintaining their escape increasingly difficult.
They arrived at a river dock where five boats awaited their arrival. The man gently placed his wife onto a seat in one of the vessels before taking the child from the heaving-breathing girl behind him. Without a backward glance, he immediately began toinspect the boat's advanced technical systems.
A tremor of unease ran through the girl as she replayed the events of mere moments ago, a shiver tracing its way down her spine. Her thoughts were a jumbled mess. She drew a deep breath, attempting to quell the frantic beating of her heart.
Once her heart rate began to normalize, she scanned her surroundings on the boat. Her mouth was parched, a desperate thirst overwhelming her. Yet, in this desolate location, where could she possibly find water?
A grim realization struck her, and she scoffed at herself. Standing on a boat with a river stretching before her, she was still unable to quench her thirst. Had fate truly destined such a cruel end for her?
It was the dead of winter, mid-January, and the air was frigid. The sky was a blanket of dark clouds, promising an imminent downpour.
Shivering from the cold, the girl sought a distraction. She surveyed the area, then resolutely stepped off the boat. From beneath her dress, she retrieved a combat knife concealed and strapped to her leg.
With swift action, she ignited the engines of the other four boats. Then, with quick slashes, she severed the ropes tethering them to the dock's railing.
The boats broke free, drifting haphazardly onto the dark waters of the River Po. Their pursuers, now on land, were effectively thwarted from following them into the river.
The child’s cries resumed, its mournful sounds echoing across the expanse. A wave of misery washed over the girl.
The night was profoundly still, the dock eerily deserted. Amidst the silence, the child’s wails seemed amplified, sharp and distinct.
'Why must this child betray us now?' Even in this dire moment, a dark humor flickered within her. Yet, the problem was undeniable: the child's cries would now pinpoint their location for the hunters.
Despite the biting cold, a sheen of sweat coated her skin, and a growing weakness pervaded her body as time slipped away.
She reached for her mid-back, where a warm dampness indicated bleeding.
Indeed, ten minutes prior, she had taken a bullet meant for the man before her.
The sound of approaching footsteps spurred her into action as she hurried back towards the boat.
Bang!
Before she could fully board, a searing pain struck her right shoulder.
