A mysterious man assured the gravely injured Jun Wu Xie he would not let her die and sent her home with a kiss on the forehead. She awoke in Lin Palace to her grandfather Jun Xian's relief, who comforted her over failing to awaken a contractual spirit and being labeled a waste. Memories revealed she had left to meet the Second Prince at his invitation but encountered a masked man in black instead.

That man himself was responsible for injuring her and hurling her into the deep chasm. Without the trees along the cliffside that cushioned her descent, she would never have gained this new lease on life.

Not a case of suicide, but cold-blooded murder.

Jun Wu Xie swiftly analyzed the circumstances in her mind. It made no difference if the black-masked assailant was the Second Prince in person; this incident was undoubtedly linked to him somehow.

Jun Xian's elite Rui Lin Army had played a pivotal role in broadening the Kingdom's territories. Nobody dared to provoke them unless they sought their own doom! Even the reigning Emperor showed deference to Jun Xian.

His Majesty continues to favor Lin Palace with special attention, yet the Jun family's downturn is undeniable. Jun Xian fathered two sons—one perished, the other left crippled—resulting in only the good-for-nothing Jun Wu Xie, who spent her days lost in daydreams. The Jun lineage's prospects appeared grim.

Lin Palace today resembles a mere paper tiger, with its strongest pillar, Jun Xian, now past seventy years.

Having endured so many ordeals, particularly after that monumental war that claimed his firstborn and maimed his second son, the accumulated strains had ravaged Jun Xian's vitality. Combined with sporadic ailments and advanced age, he likely had little time remaining. Lately, the Royal family had grown bolder in their moves against Lin Palace.

Jun Wu Xie's ordeal might precisely reflect the Royal family's schemes aimed at Lin Palace.

[It’s obvious that the second prince no longer holds the Lin Palace in regards and even dared to act so brazenly.]

The black cat grumbled inwardly. Initially, it assumed its master had been reborn into a secure household, yet it never imagined she would face such perils, compelled to battle just to stay alive.

Jun Wu Xie arched her brow faintly.

The little black cat promptly balled itself up, tucking its head beneath its fluffy paws.

Noticing his granddaughter's silence—likely still shaken—Jun Xian refrained from further lecturing. With tender affection in his eyes toward Wu Xie, he said: “It’s alright, as long as you are back, take a good rest, if you need anything, call your brother.”

Brother?

Jun Wu Xie delved into the inherited memories but found no trace of any “brother.” Jun Xian sired just two sons: the elder was her father, whose wife—her mother—passed away shortly after delivering Jun Wu Xie. During that devastating war, her father fell on the blood-soaked field, and her uncle suffered severe wounds that rendered him a cripple.

“Wu Yao, come in and take care of your sister. I’m heading out for a while,” Jun Xian summoned.

The door swung open, revealing the silhouette of a tall man.

She gazed at her supposed “brother” in astonishment.

A flawlessly handsome visage, akin to the divine masterpiece of perfection, paired with those captivating eyes as profound as the midnight sky.

“Yes.” The man offered a smile.

Jun Xian nodded approvingly, fussing once more over Wu Xie to rest well before departing and leaving the siblings by themselves.

Jun Wu Xie positioned herself at one side of the chamber, while the strikingly radiant Wu Yao occupied the opposite end.

In the instant that followed, a shadowy blur darted past Wu Xie, and before her appeared the little black cat, staunchly protecting her. Perched beside the bed, it bared its tiny fangs with a curled lip, hissing fiercely.

Jun Wu Yao glanced indifferently at the diminutive hissing creature as he sauntered forward, drew out the chair with deliberate ease, settled into it, crossed his legs, and at last fixed his gaze upon Jun Wu Xie.
