Chapter 1465: Wedding Night
Editor: Atlas Studios
The residence of the Marquis of Zhenbei was overflowing with joyous energy.
Seated in the positions of honor, Su Yuan and Madam Tao wore smiles that reached their eyes.
Today was the wedding of their fourth son. This child had suffered from severe illness during his youth, and they once feared he would never reach adulthood. Now, he had not only grown up healthy but was also taking a wife.
Such a scene was something they wouldn't have dared to imagine just a few years prior.
The husband and wife shared a meaningful look.
Madam Tao remarked softly, “We shouldn't speak of him marrying a wife. Since the princess is marrying down into our family, our son will be known as the princess’s husband.”
Su Yuan nodded in understanding.
Following the laws of the dynasty, a princess held the status of a monarch. She was not to be treated like a common daughter-in-law. Even after the nuptials, she was under no obligation to serve her parents-in-law.
The Master of Ceremony’s powerful voice rang out. “First bow to Heaven and Earth—”
Grasping the red silk ribbon between them, Su Xuan and Princess Hui An slowly turned to offer their respects to the world.
“Second bow to the parents—”
The couple bowed deeply toward the two elders.
Su Yuan cleared his throat, leaning toward Madam Tao with a hint of nerves. “Is… is this part of the rite allowed?”
Madam Tao remained composed. “The Ministry of Rites selected the Master of Ceremony. If he gave the command, it must be correct. You are an official in the Imperial Court, yet here you are asking me.”
Su Yuan rubbed his knees anxiously. “Well, this is my first time, isn't it?”
Madam Tao hissed under her breath, “The woman who stepped out of that bridal sedan is your daughter-in-law!”
“I was only saying… I’ve never had a princess bow to me before, have I?” Su Yuan whispered back.
Madam Tao understood his feelings perfectly; she was just as thrilled and anxious as he was.
When the other noble Madams heard her son would wed the princess, they had sighed, suggesting her future life would be difficult.
However, she knew Princess Hui An was a sincere and kind-hearted girl. She didn't fear the princess would mistreat her as a mother-in-law; rather, she worried her reserved son might somehow wrong the princess.
The Master of Ceremony shouted, “Husband and wife bow to each other—”
Princess Hui An’s heart raced. Assisted by the matchmaker, she bowed toward her perfect husband through the silk of her veil.
The Master of Ceremony looked on with satisfaction. “The ceremony is concluded. Send the couple to the bridal chamber—”
Cough, cough, cough!
Su Yuan began to choke.
Madam Tao was equally startled.
What was that supposed to mean?
Su Cheng, who had been observing from the side, found the Master of Ceremony’s voice strangely familiar. That annoying gaze and shameless attitude were unmistakable.
Su Cheng’s eyes sharpened. “Wei Liulang!”
Disguised in the robes of the Master of Ceremony, Wei Liulang felt a chill run down his spine. No! How had he been spotted?!
Su Cheng began rolling up his sleeves. “Wei Liulang, get over here!”
Wei Liulang flatly refused. “No way! I am currently the Master of Ceremony. I must fulfill my duty and escort them to the bridal chamber!”
“You just want to cause a ruckus in the bridal chamber!” Su Cheng barked.
Wei Liulang replied with mock righteousness, “That's right, so what if I do?”
“You have the nerve to cause trouble at a princess’s wedding?”
“I do! I do! Come and get me!”
Wei Liulang was truly asking for it.
Su Cheng began to chase him, raining down blows.
Wei Liulang took such a beating that he had to cover his head while running for his life. The gathered guests erupted into laughter at the sight.
It was a rare sight indeed. At this royal wedding, the groom was incomparable and the bride was of noble birth. They expected a grand spectacle, but they didn't expect to see the sixth son of the Wei family being thrashed.
“Not the face! I’m warning you!”
“Ow—stop hitting my backside—it’s too humiliating!—”
“Hahaha!”
The crowd was in stitches.
Princess Hui An was dying of curiosity; she wanted to see the commotion herself.
Su Xuan took her hand gently. “Princess, Ah Xuan will escort you to our chambers.”
Ah Xuan’s voice was so soothing… It was better to look at Ah Xuan anyway. He was far more handsome than anyone else.
Princess Hui An’s ears tingled. The heat from his touch traveled from her fingertips straight to her soul. The noise of the crowd faded away, leaving only the resonance of his voice in her ears.
The matchmaker was just about to lead them when she saw the groom already walking away with the bride’s hand in his.
She sighed, thinking that young people these days were certainly impatient.
The pair entered the wedding room and sat upon the bed, which was covered in red dates and peanuts.
“Ah.”
Princess Hui An let out a soft cry, shifting awkwardly. “Something is poking me.”
Su Xuan gave a soft smile and swept the peanuts away. “They are just peanuts.”
Having attended Su Xiaoxiao’s wedding, Princess Hui An knew these items symbolized the wish for a child to be born soon.
The thought of having a child with Ah Xuan made her face turn bright red.
The servants from the palace discreetly withdrew.
Only the two of them remained in the grand wedding chamber.
Su Xuan picked up the jade scepter from the table and slowly raised Princess Hui An’s veil.
A bashful face was revealed to him. Her skin was like peaches and cream, her brows shaped like distant peaks, and her bright eyes looked as though they held the entire night sky.
Su Xuan was captivated, unable to look away.
Flustered by his intense gaze, Princess Hui An didn't dare meet his eyes. “Why are you staring? Do I look strange today? I told them not to use so much powder…”
Su Xuan answered, “The princess is the most stunning woman in existence.”
“Well, I think so too,” Princess Hui An replied, “though my sidekick can almost compete with me.”
At the mention of Su Xiaoxiao, her pride returned, washing away her shyness.
Su Xuan smiled. “Princess, would you care to look at Ah Xuan as well?”
“Fine then.”
She tried to act brave.
Princess Hui An raised her eyes to look at Su Xuan.
That single glance was enough to leave her breathless for a lifetime.
In her memory, Su Xuan was always as refined as bamboo and as pure as snow. He was like flawless jade.
She never imagined that wearing the vibrant red of a wedding robe would make him appear so dazzling and soul-stirring.
He didn't even need to try; his presence alone was enough to steal one's heart.
Suddenly, Princess Hui An felt a rush of heat in her nose followed by a warm trickle.
Her nose was bleeding…
She quickly covered her face and turned away. “You—you didn't see anything!”
How mortifying.
She was a princess, yet she had a nosebleed just from looking at her husband. If Su Xiaoxiao or Jingning found out, she would never hear the end of it.
“The heat is quite intense. Ah Xuan has also bled. Look, Princess.”
Su Xuan offered her a handkerchief stained with blood.
Princess Hui An’s heart clenched with worry. She immediately turned back to him. “How did that happen? Are you hurt? My sidekick said your health was fragile…”
Outside the door, Su Xiaoxiao, who was listening in, shuddered.
When did I ever say that?
Hui An, don't frame me!
What she had actually said was: Her fourth brother had been deathly ill as a child and his constitution had remained weak ever since, requiring constant medicine.
The Head of the Secret Service was not someone to provoke. Hui An, stop making enemies for me!
“Ah Xuan, are you… unable?”
The corners of Su Xuan’s mouth tilted up, his eyes turning incredibly captivating. “Sister, is that what you said about me?”
Su Xiaoxiao waved her hands frantically in the dark. “I didn't! I really didn't!”
Swish!
A powerful gust of wind shot through the gap in the door.
Su Xiaoxiao shut her eyes tight and tried to stumble into her pharmacy space.
Thankfully, she had the pharmacy.
But in the next instant, the pharmacy spat her back out.
Betrayed by her own space, Su Xiaoxiao was speechless!
This pharmacy has no sense of loyalty!!!
Wei Ting caught her with one arm and pulled her aside.
The force Su Xuan had sent through the door missed Su Xiaoxiao but struck Wei Liulang, who was sneaking up from behind.
Wei Liulang’s acupoints were instantly sealed.
He grumbled, “I finally got away from Xiaoxiao’s father, only to have my acupoints tapped here?”
Damn it, who was skilled enough to strike his acupoints from a distance?
Little Seven, hurry up and release your brother!
Wei Ting ignored him completely and carried Su Xiaoxiao away. As they crossed the garden, he plucked two little rascals out of the bushes—two-year-old Little Wei Qing and one-and-a-half-year-old Little Ghostfear.
There was still one missing.
Wei Ting called out, “Wei Xiaobao, are you coming out on your own, or do I have to fetch you?”
Silence followed.
Wei Ting asked Little Ghostfear, “Where is your sister?”
Little Ghostfear shook his head. “I don't know.”
Wei Ting turned to Little Wei Qing. “Speak.”
Little Wei Qing sighed heavily. “Seventh Uncle, a man must have honor. I cannot sell out my sister.”
Wei Ting countered, “A stick of candied hawthorn.”
Little Wei Qing immediately grabbed Little Ghostfear’s hand and pointed toward the water tank in the corner.
It was his brother who pointed, not him, so he technically hadn't betrayed her.
Little Ghostfear, having been used as a prop, was stunned.
Su Xiaoxiao sighed from Wei Ting’s shoulder. Daughter, you're on your own. I can't save you.
The main issue was being locked out of the pharmacy. Out here, she was no match for their father.
To Su Xiaoxiao’s surprise, however, Wei Ting failed to catch her.
Wei Xiaobao had successfully ducked into the pharmacy!
Su Xiaoxiao whispered, “That biased pharmacy really has no limits when it comes to Wei Xiaobao!”
The family continued their bickering in the courtyard.
Wei Liulang, still frozen, was eventually hauled away by Su Cheng.
Quiet finally returned to the courtyard.
Inside the bridal suite, Su Xuan and Princess Hui An performed the cross-cupped wine rite.
Princess Hui An asked quietly, “Who was that outside? Was it my sidekick?”
Su Xuan took the empty glass from her and used a fingertip to gently wipe a drop of wine from the corner of her lip. “No one important.”
Princess Hui An felt like she was melting. Ah Xuan was acting so differently than usual.
“Don’t… don't you need to go back and toast the guests?”
“Why would Ah Xuan leave you to be with them on our wedding night?”
“Then…”
Princess Hui An remembered Su Xiaoxiao’s wedding and the mating manual she had looked at with her, Jingning, and Madam Zhenbei.
She knew what happened next.
Wait, that manual… and the Madam of Zhenbei.
Good heavens!
She had studied that book with her own mother-in-law!
This was a disaster. How embarrassing!
If she had known Madam Zhenbei would one day be her mother-in-law, she never would have looked at those drawings with her that night.
Su Xuan was unaware of the bold things his mother and wife had done. He assumed her nervousness was simply due to the upcoming consummation.
“If the Princess is not ready, Ah Xuan can wait.”
Princess Hui An clutched his sleeve. “It’s not that I’m unwilling.”
“Then, does the Princess wish for Ah Xuan to stay?”
Princess Hui An nodded shyly. “You are my husband. If you don't stay here, where else would you go?”
“Does the Princess wish to summon Ah Xuan to bed?”
“I’ve ‘summoned’ you many times before.”
“This time, it is for real.”
“Eh?”
Before Princess Hui An could process his words, he pulled her into a firm embrace and pressed his lips against hers.
