Max has secured a "neutral" location at a remote prison to hold Ramon, using his influence and funds to ensure cooperation from the local authorities. Ramon, provided with his lab equipment, works on repairing exoskeletons but requires more funds for high-grade parts. Max entrusts Ramon with a secret research request, which Ramon agrees to if Max can provide a Superhuman for study, also inquiring about Randy Stern.

A heavy, pregnant silence stretched between the two men, a quiet that thrummed with unspoken significance, validating the magnitude of the inquiry that had been posed. Max observed Ramon intently, his gaze sharp as he began to formulate his own response to the question.

"I investigated him," Max finally stated, his voice carrying a slight echo within the stark, technologically advanced confines of the prison room. "Or, at the very least, I attempted to. You are aware, naturally, that I am affiliated with the Stern Family. It was precisely this connection that led me to engage with two of your targets initially; I was privy to information about them through my own networks. It became abundantly clear, following the ease with which you extracted funds from Chad, that your objective was the remaining heirs."

Max leaned back, his expression an impenetrable mask. "The situation was identical for me. My intention was never to impede your progress or disrupt your operations. We were simply two predators pursuing the same prey."

"You paint a picture of a remarkably affectionate family," Ramon quipped, though a sharp edge of sarcasm underscored his words. "However, I cannot claim surprise. The intricate dynamics of high-society families have invariably proven more captivating, and indeed more ruthless, than anything encountered within street gangs."

"Right, right," Max conceded, dismissing the remark with a casual flick of his hand. The Sterns had never resonated with him as a genuine family unit; in his perception, they were mere pawns on a chessboard. If anyone in his current existence felt akin to familial bonds, it was Aron, the steadfast companion who had stood by him through every trial and betrayal.

"What I was attempting to convey," Max elaborated, his brow furrowing slightly, "is that my standing should afford me access to greater intelligence. Yet, it did not. I tasked my personal security detail with discreet inquiries, but they unearthed absolutely nothing. I embarked on my own reconnaissance, endeavoring to ascertain his true business interests, posing questions discreetly here and there, but encountered a complete vacuum. It is quite perplexing..."

Max allowed the statement to linger in the air. The source of his unease stemmed from a private ledger he had previously observed in Dennis’s office. Among all the Stern Family members, Randy commanded the most substantial wealth, second only to Dennis himself. For an individual to amass such a fortune, a significant financial footprint – encompassing investments, holdings, and corporate acquisitions – would be expected.

Yet, there was an inexplicable absence of any such record. It was as if Randy had meticulously erased his financial existence. This suggested a deliberate concealment of his activities, possibly even from Dennis. But could such extensive wealth truly be hidden from the patriarch of the Stern empire?

"Indeed, indeed," Ramon acknowledged, a knowing spark igniting in his eyes. "However, revealing the unvarnished truth about him at this juncture would diminish its impact. You must uncover it for yourself. Once you have discerned his true endeavors and charted your own course, you may then return to me. Yet, I shall not permit you to be consumed by your own conjecture. Within the Stern Family, two individuals currently hold an Invitation."

Max’s mind instantly gravitated towards the most probable inference. Dennis was the unequivocal first choice, but given Ramon's focus on Randy, he had to be the second recipient.

‘Could this be the genesis of the alliance between the Stern Family and the White Tiger syndicate?’ Max mused, his thoughts racing. ‘In my prior existence, I had merely received my own Invitation before circumstances deteriorated, but I never actually participated in the events. If one of the Cubs had eliminated me then to claim my Invitation and attended those exclusive gatherings, they would have encountered the other attendees.’

He began to draw connections across different timelines. ‘It might have been Dennis or Randy who initially brought the White Tigers into the association. Skinny Pete was present at the event in the past… so was it him?’

The cascade of thoughts brought forth increasingly perilous possibilities.

"I believe clarity will dawn upon you soon," Ramon asserted, interrupting Max’s internal deliberation. "Considering all you have achieved and the swiftness of your ascent to power, I am confident that you too will receive an Invitation in due course. Perhaps you are already on the precipice. If you distinguish yourself just a little more, the Invitation will seek you out."

"Do you possess an Invitation?" Max inquired directly. "If so, why not simply bestow yours upon me?"

"It is peculiar that you would assume an Invitation could be transferred so readily," Ramon commented, his tone dry. "As though it were a mere token one could pass along."

Max understood Ramon’s reticence. The rules governing the Invitation were explicitly detailed upon its very form, presented as prerequisites for a grand, global undertaking. It was intrinsically linked to the individual recipient.

"Well, if there's nothing more to discuss, I believe you should continue as you have been," Ramon stated, turning back to his workbench. "And don't forget to send us ample funding if you wish for this research to continue. Top-tier science doesn't come cheap."

As Max got out of the prison and breathed the cool air of Blitsber once more, his mind was occupied by the two factions targeting him. Based on his knowledge, there was an individual within the Stern family and another within the White Tigers, both seeking his demise.

He had always considered these threats as separate entities, but a new understanding began to form. If he concentrated his efforts on one, it would inevitably draw him into conflict with the other.

"I believe I've just found a method," Max murmured as he got back into the car. "A way to reach Randy Stern... and have him lead me directly to the White Tigers."
