Amy, however, didn't seem ready to share that detail just yet, so she simply shook her head. "I'm getting there, hold on."
Edward rolled his eyes but gestured for her to continue her explanation.
"Well, earlier they mentioned something about using me as bait, which is why I wasn't worried about being killed. And I wasn't, obviously," she stated, pointing to herself, "But the killer did push me into the water to make it seem like I had."
She paused, drawing a breath and allowing Edward to absorb the information she had provided so far.
"Someone was waiting in the river," she went on. "As I fell, he pulled me out and we went to the surrounding woods where a car was waiting. I was injected with another tranquilizer before being thrown into the backseat. By the time I woke up, I was on a flight to this place."
Edward let out a sigh. With every sentence she spoke, his anger grew towards the individuals who had abducted her.
"What happened once you arrived here?"
"I was introduced to the man who is about to become your biggest problem: Tai Pin."
From his position, leaning forward with his hands on his knees, Edward straightened up abruptly and turned to face Amy fully.
"What?" He wasn't convinced he'd heard her correctly.
Amy nodded. "The head of the entire organization that orchestrated my abduction is a man named Tai Pin, and I have been living with him for the past eight months."
Edward shook his head in disbelief. "No, no, that can't be right."
"I know it's difficult to believe because he was best friends with your father and..."
He inhaled sharply. "He told you?"
"He told me many things, Edward, which is why I can't stay here. I know too much, making me a liability. If he discovers I'm missing, it could lead to severe consequences."
"I won't let you go, Amy. Never."
Amy pursed her lips, fighting back the tears that welled up.
"Why didn't you call me? Why didn't you try to let me know you were alive?"
"Because he threatened to kill everyone I hold dear if I attempted to contact anyone here," Amy's voice was thick with unshed tears by this point.
"He knew every name – Gu Zhou, Chynna – he called all of you. There was nothing I could do but let you believe I was dead."
Edward processed this revelation in silence. He offered no words to Amy as he contemplated everything she had conveyed to him from the start.
"You know Jinn Yang?" Perhaps Amy could finally shed light on a question that had been lingering in his mind: what was the Yang family's involvement in all of this?
"Tai's brother-in-law?"
Edward couldn't recall ever being so shocked as he was by the bombshell Amy had just dropped.
"What?"
"Tai Pin's wife, Song, is Jinn Yang's sister."
Edward shook his head, wondering how he hadn't known this.
"Well, they were estranged. They had only recently begun communicating again."
"So, Jinn and Tai are working together?"
"To usurp your position in the mafia."
Edward let out a sharp hiss.

"Have you made the call?"
Viktor nodded and put his phone back in his pocket. "They should arrive within thirty minutes."
Edward nodded in acknowledgment.
They had returned to the hotel and were now gathered in Edward's room. Reinforcements had been summoned from the mafia ranks, as the situation was poised to unfold differently.
When Edward had traveled to Shanghai, he hadn't anticipated that the trip would culminate in a battle. However, after everything Amy had revealed to him, it was inevitable that the conflict would conclude with bloodshed.
Tai Pin was plotting to overthrow Edward and his mafia family to seize control as the leader.
Based on Amy's account, this had been a long-standing plan of his, and Edward was now on the verge of dismantling it entirely.
"When I heard you received an invitation to the party, I tried to warn you not to come." That was precisely why she had questioned why he was in Shanghai when they first encountered each other at the mall. He wasn't supposed to be there.
"I wrote an anonymous letter detailing some of these matters, but it must not have reached you."
She had taken a considerable risk by doing so, but Amy had reasoned that if she could prevent Edward from coming to Shanghai, Tai's plans would be delayed, at least temporarily.
"Even if I had received it, I would have come regardless," Edward reassured Amy. "No one plans my demise and gets away with it."
He would have moved against Tai before the latter even had the opportunity to execute his own scheme.
He then inquired about the baby, the one subject that brought him the most excitement at that moment.
"I discovered I was nearly two months pregnant a week after arriving here," Amy disclosed. Initially, she had harbored mixed feelings about the entire situation.
Bringing a child into the world for the man she cherished filled her with immense happiness. However, she was unwilling to bring a child into existence as a captive, which would surely be the outcome if Tai's manipulative schemes succeeded.
Tears welled in Edward's eyes. "I can hardly believe you were planning to have my child and keep me in the dark about it."
Amy dissolved into sobs at this, confessing, "I didn't want to keep the baby a secret from you either, but Tai issued threats. I'd rather you remain ignorant than be dead, Edward."
"Moreover," she confessed further, "Tai intends to use the baby as a lure. It's his Plan B should he fail to eliminate you."
That specific detail was what had irked him the most.
"The audacity of that man," Edward exclaimed to Viktor, his voice laced with disbelief. "A baby, my unborn child, is already being dragged into the treacherous currents of the underworld."
When Viktor had first received the news, which Edward had shared with unbridled joy upon their return to the car, he had been delighted for his boss. The arrival of a baby was coming at a challenging time, yet it was a surprise that was nonetheless welcomed.
"I still can't fathom that we're going to have a child together," Edward had expressed to Amy while they made their way back to the mall.
Their hands were clasped tightly, and neither could tear their gaze away from the other. "I simply cannot wrap my head around this reality."
A gentle smile graced Amy's lips.
