Fey Evolution Merchant Chapter 5: Clear Pond Carp

Previously on Fey Evolution Merchant...
Lin Yuan observed Morbius, his contracted fey, and discovered that despite being a Normal-grade fey, it possessed an exclusive skill called Spirit Lock, which is typically found only in Bronze-grade feys. He learned that Morbius's Spirit Lock allows it to nurture other feys within its spatial zone, but its own grade only increases by nurturing these feys, and Lin Yuan is responsible for contracting them. Although Morbius's Spirit Lock seemed demanding, it unexpectedly transferred a small amount of spiritual energy to Lin Yuan, enough for him to contract a Normal I fey plant.

After finishing the transfer of its spiritual energy, Morbius drifted back into a profound sleep.

Lin Yuan began to meticulously examine the spatial zone where he now found himself.

According to the description of the exclusive skill, Spirit Lock, this specific spatial zone was intended for the purpose of nurturing feys.

Before Lin Yuan could delve deeper into his observations, a faint sound reached his ears. It was a familiar voice calling out to him, sounding noticeably distressed.

“Why hasn't Little Yuan woken up yet? Doctor, didn’t you claim his spirit was merely overstimulated and fatigued? It’s been half a day, so why hasn't his condition improved?”

The voice belonged to Auntie Zhang, who was firing off questions one after another out of sheer anxiety.

“Yuan, Yuan, meow, meow.”

This was the voice of the Hundred Questions Beast. Although Genius was capable of speaking in human tongue, it would instinctively revert to bestial noises when overwhelmed by worry.

“Chirp, chirp, chirp! Chirp, chirp, chirp!” Chimey, the Sound Bird, was likewise chirping with great agitation.

Lin Yuan’s sudden collapse had clearly terrified Auntie Zhang, Genius, and Chimey alike.

At that moment, Lin Yuan’s consciousness finally re-anchored itself to his physical body. As he blinked his eyes open, he was immediately greeted by the sight of Chimey perched on his nose, staring at him with a nervous gaze.

He then noticed Auntie Zhang relentlessly grilling the doctor, whose forehead was now drenched in sweat from the pressure.

Lin Yuan’s abrupt awakening startled Chimey, causing the bird to hop up and let out two sharp chirps. However, it quickly shifted to a joyful mood, bouncing back onto Lin Yuan’s nose while chirping with delight.

Genius also scurried over to Lin Yuan’s neck, gently rubbing its fur against his skin. The creature was still trembling slightly, likely having been scared out of its wits earlier.

Hearing the reactions of Chimey and Genius, Auntie Zhang turned around and saw that Lin Yuan had finally opened his eyes. She immediately stopped pestering the doctor.

Seeing Lin Yuan attempt to sit up, she quickly urged, “Little Yuan, stay lying down. I’ll have the doctor examine you once more. You’ve been out for nearly ten hours, and it’s already evening. If there’s an ailment, it must be treated immediately; otherwise, a simple sickness could turn into something grave.”

Lin Yuan felt a wave of warmth in his heart from Auntie Zhang’s genuine concern. Over the last few years, she had provided him with immense care. Nevertheless, Lin Yuan was aware that nothing was physically wrong with him. His fainting spell was simply the result of Morbius’ awakening and the formation of their contract.

Auntie Zhang remained uneasy, but before she could speak further, the doctor stepped forward and remarked, “Young man, your illness gave your aunt quite a fright. I shall utilize the Clear Pond Carp to provide some healing.”

The doctor promptly summoned his contracted fey: a greenish-black carp about half a foot in length.

Large scales lined the sides of the carp’s body. As the doctor triggered its ability, a shimmering scale detached itself and hovered before Lin Yuan. He felt himself enveloped by a warm, spiritual sensation that was incredibly soothing.

In secret, Lin Yuan activated Morbius’ ability, True Data, to inspect the attributes of the Clear Pond Carp.

[Fey Name]: Clear Pond Carp [Fey Species]: Carp subspecies/Carp species [Fey Grade]: Elite (4/10) [Fey Type]: Water [Fey Quality]: Elite

Abilities: [Tail Lash]: Leaps up and delivers a lashing strike with its tail. [Clear Scales]: Gradually repairs spiritual trauma and is capable of soothing abnormal spiritual states.

Looking at the species of the Clear Pond Carp, Lin Yuan initially thought its attributes seemed average, yet he was surprised to find it was actually an Elite fey.

After reviewing the data, Lin Yuan realized the doctor was exceptionally lucky.

Clear Pond Carps were typically very common water-type feys. At the Normal-grade, their starting abilities were usually physical, like Tail Lash or Fin Flap.

Unexpectedly, upon reaching the Elite-grade, this particular carp had manifested the rare ability, Clear Scales. This gave the Clear Pond Carp the potential to eventually transform into a dragon and granted it an uncommon spiritual healing power.

Before long, more sweat gathered on the doctor’s brow. Once the glowing scale lost its radiance, the doctor halted the ability, and the scale crumbled into ash.

“It isn't anything serious. Just get plenty of rest and eat some nutritious meals, and you’ll be back on your feet in no time.” As he spoke, the doctor reached for his sleeve to wipe his face, but Auntie Zhang quickly offered him a tissue.

“Thank you for your hard work, Doctor. Please, use this to wipe your sweat.”

Accepting the tissue, the doctor said, “Now that the healing is complete, I’ll take my leave. It’s getting late, and my wife is waiting for me to have dinner.”

The doctor gathered his equipment and exited the shop. Though his forehead was still damp, his eyes shone with a quiet satisfaction. He might only be a local doctor, but the fulfillment of saving and healing others was a reward in itself.

Once the doctor had departed, Auntie Zhang looked at Lin Yuan with a worried expression. “Little Yuan, if you feel unwell, you mustn't push yourself. Your health is your greatest asset. If something happens to you, what would become of Little Ci?”

Fearing that Lin Yuan might neglect his health, Auntie Zhang pointedly mentioned his younger sister, who was away at school.

“Don't worry, Auntie Zhang. I’ll make sure to bring you the doctor’s fees tomorrow. I’m truly sorry for causing you so much trouble all day.”

Lin Yuan spoke with total sincerity. Standing up, he noticed the Usneas had grown vines nearly three meters long, causing him to sigh in amazement.

He then poured a cup of water for Auntie Zhang as a gesture of gratitude.

“Little Yuan, there’s no need for such formalities with me. Your Uncle Li and I have watched you grow up since you were small.”

Auntie Zhang took the cup and drained it in a single gulp, letting out a burp afterward. She had been so preoccupied with worry that she hadn't realized how thirsty she was.

Seeing that Lin Yuan was persistent in his politeness, Auntie Zhang didn't argue further, knowing the young man was firm in his principles.

Noticing her empty cup, Lin Yuan moved to refill it, but she waved him off. “Little Yuan, give me a pot of Jasmine Lily. I want to place it by your Uncle Li’s bedside tonight.”

As she spoke, Auntie Zhang pulled out 500 Federation dollars and pressed them into Lin Yuan’s hand.

Lin Yuan stared at the money and said with a sigh, “Auntie Zhang, you buy a Jasmine Lily every month. Sometimes you even buy two. You really don’t have to—”

Auntie Zhang cut him off before he could finish. “Is your Auntie Zhang not allowed to have more flowers in her home?”

Left with no choice, Lin Yuan went to fetch a pot of Jasmine Lily for her. He tried to select the one in the finest condition, but Auntie Zhang had already picked up a pot with wilted leaves that likely only had a few days left.

“I’ll take this one; I feel a certain connection to it,” she remarked.

Seeing Auntie Zhang carry away that specific Jasmine Lily filled Lin Yuan’s heart with warmth. It was always the same—she used the same excuses and chose the same struggling plants every time.

Suddenly, a series of rhythmic “thud, thud, thud” sounds rang out. A rabbit the size of a medium dog appeared. Its fur was a blend of red and black, and it possessed massive, palm-leaf-shaped ears that were nearly as tall as its body, giving it a mouse-like appearance.

Recognizing the distinct sound, Genius and Chimey bolted toward the door. Genius climbed onto the large rabbit’s back while Chimey perched on its head.

This large rabbit was Auntie Zhang’s contracted fey and had been the only spirit beast friend to Genius and Chimey for years.

The rabbit hopped toward Auntie Zhang, carrying a package wrapped in blue cloth with one of its large ears.

Lin Yuan had always assumed this creature was a Terror Rabbit. However, when he used True Data to inspect the rabbit he thought he knew so well, he realized he had been completely wrong!
