“Something feels off?”
The somewhat laid-back Moli didn’t quite grasp what Leo Ray meant. She creased her brows and replied, “Got it, the ‘Corrosion’ attack is really fierce and bizarre!”
“No, it’s not the ‘Corrosion’; it’s that God Stone General from earlier.”
With a piercing stare, Leo Ray kept guiding his powerful allies toward the city wall while scanning the area intently as he explained.
“Are you talking about the commander called Curry? What’s the issue with him?”
Moli blinked in surprise at first, then seemed to catch on and exclaimed in alarm, “Wait, has he turned into a Parasite?”
“Right on the mark, even though he showed barely any signs, we still can’t ignore the chance.”
Leo Ray affirmed Moli’s suspicion and ordered the powerhouses nearby, “Tighten up the formation, and avoid spreading out too far.”
“Young human, do you mean that guy was just trying to split our forces? That explains why we rushed to support all four walls at once.”
Moli finally pieced it together, her almond eyes narrowing as she asked, “But he doesn’t display any Parasite traits.”
“Remember, in the initial phase of parasitization, the signs aren’t clear, and with the wild energy fluctuations inside the fortress, it’s possible he’s hiding them—or even using tricks like makeup or armor to cover up.”
Leo Ray’s eyes shifted to the helmets worn by the generals around them, his voice grave as he answered.
From his recent talks with Old Book and the others, Leo Ray knew full well.
During the early days of ‘Corrosion’ parasitization, while most folks like the White Knight get those telltale crystals on their foreheads, plenty of cases show them elsewhere on the body, hard to spot without close inspection—especially when hidden by helmets or gear.
On top of that, though Old Book and his group had ways to spot Parasites, and Leo Ray had picked up some tips from them, those methods relied on steady energy readings in calm times, which were nearly impossible to pick up amid battlefield chaos, not even for the Stone Spirits.
“Young human, if there’s no clear way to tell, how did you figure he might be a Parasite?”
A serious expression crossed Moli’s pale features as she pushed for details.
“It came down to his behavior. The fortress is in dire straits, but the top commander, that God Stone General, lingered by the Teleportation Array to greet us—it felt way too calculated. He clearly wasn’t worried about the place falling. Normally, a Deputy General or Staff Officer could’ve briefed us on the situation; no reason for him to show up in person.”
Leo Ray gave a small nod and continued, “The moment that struck me as odd, I started doubting him, and his push to scatter our forces sealed the suspicion for me.”
“If he’s a Parasite, then yeah, it all clicks.”
Moli nodded firmly, her brow furrowing as she added, “Right now, neither Observation City nor the fortress has fallen. It can’t be the ‘Corrosion’ outside pulling this. Looks like it’s those infiltrators from before, the ones using that honey trap scheme!”
With that, Moli turned back to Leo Ray and questioned, “So, what’s our next move?”
“Since they’re pushing to divide our strength, they must plan to take us down piecemeal. Likely, they’ll let the outer ‘Corrosion’ wear us down first, then strike when we’re isolated.”
Leo Ray thought it over briefly before replying, “That said, this is only a guess. Things are murky, and tipping our hand too soon would be unwise. I’ve already sent Grey Elder back to Observation City on the sly to alert the old City Lord. For now, we adapt calmly to whatever comes.”
As he finished, Leo Ray’s brows knit together slightly.
He’d originally intended to use Magic Communication to reach out straight to Kara, Calvin, and Nick back in Observation City, but the connection failed. Clearly, the ‘Corrosion’ had jammed the magic links between the cities.
“Either way, they can’t have stashed too many forces inside the fortress without notice. If we grip these two walls tight and stay compact, they’ll struggle to hit us hard.”
Leo Ray gave Moli a nod and kept urging his allies to stick close.
“That’s the smartest way to play it.”
Moli’s starlit eyes took on a thoughtful glint, though worry crept in as she said, “But what if the old City Lord’s been quietly parasitized too?”
“We have to consider that risk, but right now, beating back the outer ‘Corrosion’ takes priority.”
Leo Ray kept his expression steady, though inside, frustration and worry churned.
After all, he’d only arrived recently, and so much was beyond his grasp—he couldn’t fully rely on anyone except his own people. For the moment, he’d just have to proceed carefully, step by step.
Key point was, both the old City Lord and the four God Stone Generals sat at half-step Seventh Stage power, and only Moli, Sheila, and his own boosted self could stand against them.
In this setup, if even one key player got parasitized, whether they stirred up trouble with their rank or not, their raw might alone posed a huge threat.
Just as these thoughts raced through Leo Ray’s mind, the group reached the fortress wall.
