"City Lord, what's going on?"
Spotting the abrupt shift in Old Book's face, Leo Ray quickly asked.
"Lord Brave, the Underground Fortress guarding Observation City is being assaulted by 'Corrosion'!"
Old Book flicked his hand, summoning a massive map that displayed Observation City's landscape.
The map revealed a substantial fortress close to Observation City, where the pair established a joint defense setup, separated by a short distance.
"No time to waste—let's hurry to provide backup. Old City Lord, if you would guide us."
Leo Ray rose from his chair without a second's delay.
Leo Ray knew full well that even though the system prompt hadn't detailed the punishment for losing the city, with an isolated settlement crying out for aid, the consequences were painfully clear.
If 'Corrosion' broke through the city, our forces would surely meet total annihilation.
"My gratitude, Your Excellency. The portal to the fortress lies right beyond the Great Temple!"
Old Book gave Leo Ray a nod before stepping forward to usher the group rapidly from the temple.
Soon enough, the team dashed at breakneck pace to a grand teleportation array inside the city. A queue had already snaked out, filled with geared-up elite troops stepping into the portal one after another, lending the atmosphere a heavy air of urgency and gravity.
"City Lord, one Divine Stone General remains to protect the city, while the remaining two are now at the fortress!"
The veteran General Curry came up and briefed Old Book.
"Good, hold the line here—I'll take the brave warriors to reinforce!"
Old Book acknowledged Curry with a nod, adding, "The foes are sly beyond belief; we must prepare for potential feints."
"Got it!"
Curry placed a fist to his chest in salute, then ordered the troops at the array to clear a path.
Learning that the valiant Leo Ray and his allies were rushing to aid, the soldiers brimmed with thrill and shot admiring looks toward Leo Ray's crew.
Yet Leo Ray sharply picked up on the fact that those looks held more than just admiration and zeal—they carried traces of grief and despair too.
"That makes sense; the horror of 'Corrosion' defies comprehension. It's only natural for regular troops to feel this shaken."
Putting it out of mind, Leo Ray directed his team into the teleportation array as Old Book directed.
A brief wave of weightlessness passed, and when Leo Ray's sight sharpened, he stood amid a lively training field.
Reinforcement human troops who had just teleported in were hastily assembling into formations, marching off to the immense fortress ramparts. Alongside them, Leo Ray spotted Dwarf Elf warriors and Alchemy Puppets as well.
Even though these fighters ranked above Tier 4 and appeared highly disciplined, a palpable wave of unease soon spread through the area.
"Lord Brave, come along this path with this old one!"
Old Book gripped his Divine Stone Staff firmly, forging ahead once more to lead them.
Following a hurried trek, Leo Ray joined over a hundred companions in climbing swiftly to the fortress battlements.
As Leo Ray and his group at last glimpsed the adversaries beyond the walls, their eyes widened in shock.
Up close in the heavens, endless 'Corrosion' of diverse hues floated menacingly, lashing out with their thin tentacles in a frenzy against the fortress's Absolute Defense Barrier.
Every strike from those wiry tentacles produced a profound, booming echo from the barrier, akin to a funeral toll ringing in the ears and pounding through every soul present.
What's more, the dread induced by 'Corrosion' lingered constantly, sending an instant shiver down everyone's spine.
In that instant, the myriad 'Corrosion' tentacles thrashed wildly across the sky, visible to the horizon. Silent as they were without war shouts, the display struck terror into all who beheld it.
Luckily, Leo Ray had assembled mainly Tier 6 powerhouses. Those at Tier 4, such as Kara, Calvin, and Old Nick, stayed back at the temple, allowing the rest to channel their inner power and fend off the fear's grip.
Furthermore, the golden shine on the Absolute Defense Barrier of the fortress was visibly fading, with subtle fissures starting to emerge.
"Lord Brave, this marks the primary enemy assault point; the other fronts are handled by fellow Divine Stone Generals—entrust this to our care!"
Old Book charged forward, swinging his staff to call down a colossal golden ray from above, slamming into the closest 'Corrosion'.
In the beam's reach, the 'Corrosion' appeared brutally pummeled, plummeting en masse to the earth, while about a dozen in the core dissolved right away, reduced to evaporating slime pools.
At the same time, golden auras shimmered across Old Book's nearby troops, who unleashed volleys of arrows to fell a few 'Corrosion'. Typically, multiple shots were needed to down one, clearly drawing from Old Book's Power of the Stars.
Still, against hordes numbering in the tens of thousands of 'Corrosion', these strikes proved insignificant, only briefly slowing the assault without turning the tide.
"Now it's time for me to join the fray."
Leo Ray gestured casually, calling forth Little Jie, Xiao Jing, and Sheila, as the Power of Divine Grace trailed closely, instantly igniting the Power of the Stars within the trio of Stone Spirits.
