Endless Debt Chapter 734 - 214, Seat 6
"As you can see, this is currently all we know about Gold and the Original Object."
Lebius’s face showed a worried expression, "We haven’t made any substantial progress except discovering the Constant Metal, and it seems we’ll have to rely on the Sublimation Furnace Core."
"At least we finally got this information and ensured their safety."
Yas closed the door, behind which were Duwa and Aimou, who had never stopped their research. Duwa was responsible for the Constant Metal, while Aimou dealt with Gold, trying to locate his lost consciousness.
Now both action teams were escorting them together, and unless a Defender Tier power descended, they would be hard-pressed to stop them.
Lebius leaned to the side, looking at the ground, murmuring, "One wave has yet to subside as another rises."
He was not only worried about Gold and the Original Object but also concerned about the storm approaching the Order Bureau.
"You’ve also received news, right? About Red Dog."
Yas nodded, "All the team leaders received the news. Interestingly, we almost thought this was the King’s Secret Sword declaring war on us; the Field Operations Department was completely mobilized overnight."
Listening to Yas, for the first time, a rare smile appeared on Lebius’s icy face, followed by a hint of bitterness in the smile.
Shortly after the Paradise incident ended, the Order Bureau had conveyed a secret message to Lebius through Yuriel, which he had yet to disclose to the team members. The current events were exhausting enough, and Lebius didn’t want to add more pressure on them.
Yas lit a cigarette. He had been highly tense these days, and this was a rare moment of relaxation.
"The Sixth Seat, Red Dog Glyain, he suddenly approached Oath City Opus and openly exposed himself without hiding, seemingly not knowing what to do..."
Yas continued, "As early as last year, we received intelligence that Red Dog left the Pillar of Royal Authority. Since then, he mysteriously disappeared, only to suddenly reappear now. What do you think he wants to do?"
"I don’t know."
Lebius shook his head, his tone calm.
Seeing this, Yas chuckled, teasing, "I thought you’d be furious."
"I’m not who I once was, as for Red Dog..."
Lebius paused, then stated confidently, "I will make amends for my mistake and drive the unstabbed sword through his heart."
Seeing this, Yas didn’t say much more; he put away his smile and silently smoked, knowing about Lebius’s and Red Dog’s enmity. Toward the end of the Secret War, he and Geoffrey almost assassinated Red Dog.
This battle was viewed by others as Lebius’s honor. Whenever someone mentioned Lebius, they would always talk about the Red Dog who he almost killed. But Yas knew, for Lebius, it was no honor at all; instead, it was disgrace.
Lebius should have killed him, it was his dereliction of duty.
Yas asked, "Does Geoffrey know about this?"
"I haven’t told him yet," Lebius said, "Telling him now would only affect his mindset and possibly impact our upcoming actions."
Yas sighed, "Truly rational."
Lebius was silent for a few seconds before reluctantly saying, "If I had been as rational then as I am now, maybe everything would have ended long ago."
"It’s not too late to end it now."
Yas placed a hand on Lebius’s shoulder, taking a strong drag on his cigarette and exhaling a lingering smoke cloud.
"For someone like you, do you know what the best thing is?"
Lebius asked in return, "What?"
"You’re still alive, and so is your enemy. Isn’t that great?"
Yas squeezed out a smile, "You still have the chance to correct your mistakes, even if they have already been made."
Lebius sneered, heading to the back of the vehicle. Despite his calm demeanor, the news still hit him hard, like a boulder weighing down his chest, making it hard for Lebius to breathe.
Yas watched as Lebius left. He knew his old friend and understood that Lebius needed some private space to calm his restless heart.
Since the Secret War, the Order Bureau and the King’s Secret Sword had been in opposition, with constant conflicts across the Narrow Countries, not to mention the numerous clashes that erupted within Oath City Opus last year.
In the past, these conflicts could be seen as small skirmishes, as the main forces had not been deployed. But now, with the esteemed Sixth Seat, Red Dog Glyain, suddenly approaching the Order Bureau, it had to be taken seriously by the bureau.
"Red Dog Glyain."
Yas muttered, closing his eyes, as a fiery red figure seemed to flicker through his mind, leaving a trail of bones and remnants in its wake.
Lebius reached the back of the vehicle, with the surrounding scenery quickly racing past him. Looking into the distance, the boundary between the sea and the sky blurred, as for the Free Port, Lebius could no longer see it.
The chaotic wind gradually drowned out the turmoil in Lebius’s mind. He tried to calm himself down, determined not to repeat past mistakes.
"The moment still arrived, Lebius."
A familiar voice sounded beside him. Unknown to when, someone had appeared next to Lebius, sitting on a portable folding chair, appreciating the scenery along with Lebius.
Lebius said, "This has nothing to do with you."
"Alright, alright, I knew you wouldn’t agree so easily."
Belphegor said, taking out a pair of sunglasses, as the morning sun was somewhat dazzling. It was quite unfriendly for someone like him, who dwelled in darkness.
The Devil appeared beside him again. Even though Lebius had seen Belphegor many times, he still found it difficult to get used to the Devil’s sudden appearances and disappearances.
Lebius composed himself to deal with Belphegor, "I will do as you say, bringing Canary and Bai Ou back to the Order Bureau."
"Hmm."
Belphegor crossed his arms, nodding at the scenery like a boss listening to an employee’s report.
"And what about Ewen?"
Lebius was puzzled, "What use is he to you? He’s just an ordinary person."
From the start, Lebius knew there was a hint of the Devil’s influence behind this action. It was not just a struggle between the Order Bureau and the Zongge Orchestra but also a contention between Belphegor and the Joyous Desire Witch.
Thus, when Canary appeared, Lebius was not surprised, accepting it rather easily. However, he did not expect Ewen to attract Belphegor’s attention as well.
Palmer thought it was his persuasion that dissuaded Lebius from dealing with Ewen; in reality, it was Belphegor who stopped Lebius.
Mentioning Ewen, Belphegor seemed quite interested, "Ewen? He’s no ordinary person."
Belphegor did not further explain the internal details to Lebius; he only told him, "Just do your job. My demands aren’t many."
Lebius’s face turned ashen, even the warm sun could not warm him.
"Oh, your face looks frightening. Is it because of Red Dog?"
Belphegor knew of the enmity between Lebius and Red Dog, which was precisely why Belphegor and Lebius were connected.
"So many years have passed, do you have the confidence to defeat Red Dog?"
Belphegor’s tone turned mocking, "Or... do you have the courage to face him?"
Lebius remained silent.
"Then will you take Geoffrey with you? Bring your friend to die with you? Hahaha!"
The laughter ceased, and Belphegor grabbed Lebius’s hand, "Don’t worry, my friend."
"Lebius, you know, I’m on your side. I’d rather you win than leave the world to that insatiable, gluttonous monster."
"Of course, that’s provided you implore me."
Lebius continued to stay silent, unsure whether Belphegor was truthfully speaking or lying. He didn’t even know Belphegor’s true motive. Was it really just for the so-called Endless Poems?
He couldn’t figure it out and was too tired to think about it. Lebius believed in the Decision Room, just as his team members believed in him.
Only with unwavering and foolish belief could they survive in this maddening world.
Beside him, Belphegor vanished — or rather, he never truly existed. Lebius let the warm sun shine on him, but no matter what, it couldn’t warm his cold heart.
