Endless Debt Chapter 1576 - 93: Reconstruction
Previously on Endless Debt...
The rumbling explosion rang in his ears, and the scorching air currents wrapped in shock waves overturned Libel all at once. He felt a burst of dizziness, and then he lost control of his body.
Libel’s vision was in chaos, he felt like a bag of trash, crashing erratically in the fierce wind. Amidst the repeated impacts, severe pain came from various parts of his limbs, as if several bones were broken, and there might have been massive internal bleeding.
Damn it, Libel complained with his remaining consciousness, knowing those Bloodthirsty would self-destruct, they should have been killed at a safe distance... No choice. If he hadn’t filled the gap, that Bloodthirsty would have breached the gap and entered the Fortress of the Morning Wind.
"Cough... cough..."
Libel stopped rolling, struggled to open his eyes, and his view was stained red with blood. The pervasive dark clouds obscured the sunlight, and only patches of fire were left burning.
Only blurry images lay before him. Large colored patches seeped through, and he could vaguely see one shadow after another moving.
Even if he couldn’t see clearly, Libel knew those were Bloodthirsty drawn by the smell of blood.
"Am I really going to die here?"
A desperate thought surfaced in Libel’s mind. He tried to lift his body but could only manage feeble struggles as rain and blood mixed together, covering him in wet mud.
With heavy breathing, Libel’s senses returned. He forced his eyes to blink fiercely, finally seeing his surroundings clearly.
At this moment, Libel was amidst ruins, where stacked wreckage rose constantly. At the highest point, familiar spires and bastions could be seen. In the depths of the ruins extending on both sides, partially submerged corridors could still be seen, with glimmers of firelight and shadows flickering in the gaps.
The sound of artillery barrages kept coming from the depths of the ruins. Cannons set inside the high walls continued firing, but as more Bloodthirsty arrived, the artillery attacks gradually became futile.
The Bloodthirsty took advantage of the reloading intervals to climb onto the muzzles, trying to squeeze through the narrow windows. Even if the Condensers killed them in time, if the corpses weren’t quickly dealt with, the Bloodthirsty bodies would swell and explode.
Through their suicidal attacks, they had destroyed several cannons, leaving one deep pit after another on the high walls.
"We’re doomed..."
Even with muddled senses, Libel realized his whereabouts. In the recent explosion, he had somehow been blasted into the gap, the fiercest area of battle.
The fact was just as he thought, almost at the same moment that Libel realized this, dense showers of bullets rained down from the gap.
To block the intrusion of the Bloodthirsty, the Condensers had hastily set up a position at the breach, striving to repel the advance of the Bloodthirsty.
Gunfire and cannonade roared incessantly, almost tearing Libel’s eardrums apart. He could only do his best to curl up his body, praying that he wouldn’t be hit by a stray bullet or have his throat bitten by the incoming Bloodthirsty.
"Support! Support! We need High Tier Condensers!"
Vague cries for help came from the rear, but no one responded.
Now, all High Tier Condensers had been deployed to the battlefield. Their targets were not these Bloodthirsty but the hidden Night Race, which was even more troublesome than the Bloodthirsty, making it difficult to spare forces to aid this crumbling breach.
A searing flame rose above Libel’s head. He looked up, seeing several enormous fireballs conjure out of thin air, their radiance blinding like a scorching sun, imbued with terrifying power.
This breach had turned into ruins under the continuous bombing of the fireballs, and now it was about to fall again, completely breaking through the defense of the Fortress of the Morning Wind.
Frantic shouts echoed in the whistle.
"Find that Illusion Creation faction! Deal with him!"
On the bloodstained coast beneath the high walls, High Tier Condensers struggled through the Bloodthirsty army, slaying one obstructing enemy after another.
They responded over the whistle, "We are doing our best!"
The enemies were too numerous, akin to a sea of sand, that even though they were High Tier Condensers, it was difficult to break through in a short time, not to mention that hostile High Tier Night Race were lurking, watching for an opportunity from the shadows.
"It’s... it’s starting to fall!"
Libel heard the screams in the whistle, and under his gaze, several growing fireballs converged, transforming into a deadly fiery sun with a diameter of several dozen meters, its surface radiating lethal heat, causing raindrops to turn into hazy steam before even approaching.
Though still far, Libel could already feel the terrifying heat from the fiery sun. His damp clothes dried swiftly, followed by burns on his skin.
Libel fumbled messily, grasping a dagger. Holding the weapon brought a certain sense of security, but this dagger couldn’t slice through the plummeting sun, nor could it kill the Bloodthirsty.
Despair gripped Libel’s heart like a tide gradually engulfing him. Under the blinding light, batches of Bloodthirsty climbed the fissures, their shadows twisted and menacing, resembling a living dark forest.
The sound of the guns and cannons was like incessant thunder, booming across the battlefield. The explosions resounded like the end of the world, with flames shooting skyward, fragments scattering, instantly tearing the tranquility of the air.
All the living seemed trapped in a swirl of life and death, fighting desperately, with each shout filled with pain and fear.
The wails sounded like silent cries, heart-rending, echoing across the battlefield. They were the cries of the warriors, their helplessness and despair in the face of death and pain.
Gunshots, explosions, fighting, bleeding, wailing... they intertwined to form a massive dirge.
Until a piercing howl broke through the dirge.
Libel saw an iron spear, speeding and piercing through the falling sun like breaking an egg yolk. The surging, frantic power tilted and became unbalanced, and before a complete release, the enraged Ethers seemed to be robbed of control, subdued by another higher will commanding them to quiet down.
Suddenly, absolute silence descended upon the earth.
The sun disintegrated into countless sparks, falling softly to the ground, fading into nothingness.
Everything felt illusionary until the approaching footsteps brought Libel back to reality’s presence.
A voice inquired, "Are you okay?"
Libel forced himself to turn his head, and what appeared before him was a bewildering figure...
Indeed, bewildering, amidst the bloodthirsty madness, clothed in soil and blood, yet his attire was impeccably neat, even sporting a tie, resembling a company employee who had wandered onto the wrong set. If it weren’t for his throat struggling for breath, Libel would have asked him if he had blundered into the wrong place.
Seeing no response, the company employee raised his hand, the Ethers continuously surging. Libel felt the ground beneath him begin to tremble, then the entire layer of bricks elevated, lifting his body to suspend him in mid-air.
"You ask me if I’d be merciful? What’s the point of mercy?"
The company employee started talking to himself, "They were humans once, but from the moment they became Bloodthirsty, they were already dead... It’s like killing the Demon, there’s no need for any psychological burden."
As he spoke, iron spears extracted from his back, wielded by invisible colossal forces, they shot forth like cannonballs, easily piercing through the Bloodthirsty who hadn’t even approached, then the spears deformed inside them, utterly pulverizing their bodies into a mist of blood.
Libel paused in shock, suddenly realizing these iron spears were the same type that had pierced the fiery sun moments ago, and belatedly recognized the man’s attire. It was indeed the uniform of a company employee, but the company’s name was the Order Bureau.
"Keep calm."
Bologue comforted Libel, the wounded, while unleashing his own Ether, the Defender’s power rose from the fissure.
Just as Holt revealed his power to everyone, Bologue also declared to all enemies that a Defender was safeguarding the fissure.
Then... rock the earth.
A violent tremor resounded from the fissure again, bewildering Libel, fearing that consecutive battles would further collapse the fissure. But the truth was, countless bricks suspended, under Bologue’s command, rapidly repositioning and assembling according to his will.
Bologue had never seen the plans for constructing the Fortress of the Morning Wind, but it didn’t hinder him from, based on experience, building temporary strongholds amidst the scorched battle. During the fierce battles, Bologue had always been the swiftest to shovel earth.
The collapsed fissure continuously filled up, sharp protrusions extended from the walls, buried cannons also suspended, connected by Deceitful Snake Scale Liquid, Death Metal molded into bullets loaded within.
Bologue stood like a Celestial God atop the reformed high wall, a towering edifice, rising from the ground.
